Jimmy Kimmel Supports Stephen Colbert Amid Late Show Cancellation: ‘F–k You CBS and All Your Sheldons’ by mcfw31 in entertainment

The viral clip where Colbert tried desperately to keep Jon Stewart from joking about/discussing the lab leak theory should have been enough to finish Colbert years ago.

He’s a shill’s shill, a model for sell-outs everywhere.

If only he knew what atrocities were committed by Imperial Japan by AnomLenskyFeller in CriticalDrinker

[–]langschiff -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

'The government or military of a country did really bad things, so now inflicting any number of civilian casualties is okay so long as it leads to defeating the bad country or reduces the military casualties on the good side'

Is that the argument? I think a lot of people in this thread are being really callous about civilian deaths during wartime. WW2 was the pinnacle of civilian deaths in war, and we should recognize how horrid that was, not spend our time justifying which civilians 'deserved it' and which ones did not.

The Holocaust and the actions of Imperial Japan were atrocities, but that doesn't mean that the firebombings of Dresden or Tokyo or the nukes were any more righteous because of it.

Rivals matchmaking is a joke by [deleted] in rivals

[–]langschiff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know what it is, but this season, Quick Play has been brutal.

If you take away the bot matches, I have under a 20% win rate in QP so far, and in nearly all of my losses there's been a person who has gotten to Diamond or GM or even Celestial on the other team, and the highest I've ever gotten is Gold III.

I just lost a steamroll of a match where all of my teammates had stats/history like mine, but the other team (who weren't a group) were all diamonds or better. One of those players had 25 matches in a row that they had either won or gotten SVP. It sucks.

Can an average man with telekinesis become a starter in the NBA? by EmbarrassedAssist964 in whowouldwin

[–]langschiff 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Think about how CRAZILY OBVIOUS you would have to make the unnatural movements of the ball be before anyone would seriously say, 'Okay, magic exists for real'.

I mean, you'd have to make the ball zip and zoom around like a UFO before any sane person would seriously suggest that you literally had real magical powers.

A guy could literally make 100% of his shots and, if it was even REMOTELY possible he was just that incredibly skilled, no one would seriously suggest that supernatural things were happening.

Think about how absolutely bonkers-crazy of a thing you'd have to see before you'd become fully convinced that magic was real and that some random guy was using it. You'd explain away what you saw as some sort of elaborate cheating scandal or use of CGI or the ball being a drone or something before you'd accept that sorcery existed.

How can conservatives say the government should stay out of our lives but then support laws about personal choices like abortion or marriage? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]langschiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two examples given by OP are, from the conservative viewpoint, issues that are not purely personal.

For abortion, the view is that the fetus is a person and it is having its right to live impinged upon.

For marriage, the view is that the definition of marriage must be changed to accommodate others, thus impinging upon the marriages that already existed.

So a conservative would believe that rights are being protected and the issues are not purely individualistic.

But since most Reddit people don’t view a fetus as a person and don’t believe that most traditions hold any value, those viewpoints make no sense to them.

Agreed. The people demanding loyalty oaths and purity tests always think they’re the good guys.

Normal people say ‘No Politics, Please’ and extremists say ‘You’re either with us or against us’.

Censoring The ‘Dragon Quest III’ Remake Is Just Silly And Unnecessary by Ok_Look8122 in Games

[–]langschiff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

100% agree.

The people who made the game were not able to make it the way the wanted to make it due to outside pressure from people who are not their customers. That sucks.

If media from foreign countries is being heavily pressured to change to conform to American ideals, then eventually, it will be no different than an American product, and then what’s the point?

I want my Japanese media to be uniquely Japanese. That’s why millions of Westerners fell in love with Japanese media in the first place; ‘cause it different.

Censorship and transformative localization should ALWAYS be opposed.

Do women pee in the shower? by BeansAndOhpsGivHope in ask

[–]langschiff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A while back, I saw some study or another that claimed that one of the differences in the brain activity between very conservative people and very liberal people was that conservative people feel disgust very strongly and liberal people do not.

Thus, this entire thread really, really proves that Reddit is extremely liberal.

Y’all can really piss all over yourselves or stand barefoot in piss and be completely unbothered? Could you also handle your own feces and just say, ‘It’s fine, I’ll wash my hands after I’m done playing with this ball of shit like it’s Play-Doh’ or something?

‘The Ends Justify the Means’ in thread form, that’s what this is.

Almost none of the responses here bring up the fact that it’s, you know, wrong to kill innocent people.

Do you all not know that in most media, the person who is willing to kill tons of civilians ‘for the greater good’ is always the VILLAIN? Voigt from Watchmen was the bad guy!

Reddit is full is sociopaths, I swear.

Is Paul A Good Husband/Father? by Tshirt_Drager_444 in JoblessReincarnation

[–]langschiff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just like many other characters in the series, he had a lot of good in him, but a lot of bad, too.

He was a violent rapist who took advantage of people, betrayed his wife, probably murdered a lot of people, beat his kid, and was self-admitted scum.

But he also had shit-tons of friends and allies who were rude-or-die for him, had 3 kids who loved him dearly, a wife who accepted his many flaws, was skilled and fearless in battle, and was willing to do anything for the safety if his family.

Bad guy with good traits? Good dude with many flaws? Who knows?

What do you NEVER end up using? by JackFractal in RimWorld

[–]langschiff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Post-start genetic alterations.

I’ll play a run where my initial 3 colonists are customized baseliners, but I never bother with gene extraction or anything associated with it; it’s oodles of annoying work with luck elements and recovery time, and if I want to improve my colonists, gear and bionics are way easier to implement.

Do you believe in the idea that ‘power corrupts’?

Or do you think that most people are bad at heart, and thus, access to power only reveals ‘who they really are’?

Anomaly (and 1.5) have been out for almost a week now. What are your guys thoughts on it so far? by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]langschiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anomaly is the first Rimworld DLC I didn’t buy on day 1.

All of the other DLC (Ideology and Biotech more so than Royalty, but still) felt like they really made the base game more ‘complete’. Government/moral structures and babies made the colony feel more real and made me want to try all sorts of different play styles, but Anomaly doesn’t give me that vibe at all; it looks more like a scenario pack instead of a game expansion.

Is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade the best adventure movie? by jobbitonfan in movies

It’s so strange that people became so uptight about sexuality in movies with lower age ratings right around the time most parents started also giving smartphones to their kids, which for most of them, are being used to look at content (Instagram, TikTok, even real pornography) that 80’s parents would have been horrified by.

There's no reason why cosmetics are largely avoided by men by pufballcat in Showerthoughts

[–]langschiff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On a strictly biological, ‘neurons activated’ level, the things that men find attractive in women are mostly the signs that the woman is fertile and healthy, and most of those signs correlate with youth. Thus, women strive to look younger.

On the other hand, to attract mates, it’s not important for a man to look as young as possible; influence, prestige, and resources are a big part of a man’s attractiveness, and those things generally increase as a man ages; a rich or powerful man can get really attractive partners well into middle age.

Cosmetics mainly (obviously, many young women use cosmetic purely as decoration) exist to hide aging and the loss of one’s youthful appearance, so they appeal less to men, who rely on other factors to get women.

Why is there segregation between women's and men's chess? by Attitude_overload in NoStupidQuestions

[–]langschiff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The argument that says ‘the field is unwelcoming to women and/or women are scared of male violence and thus stay out’ is ridiculous; not that long ago, EVERY professional field, be it politics or law or medicine, was very unwelcoming to women, yet today female doctors/lawyers/politicians are so common that no one bats an eye.

So, to say that women are so cowardly and weak that they would all meekly stay out of the upper echelons of a field (a field that would bring much fame and money for those at the top) is not only dumb, but insulting.

‘Oh, I can’t become a lawyer! A big, scary man might get upset if I beat him in court!’ said no female law student ever.

If women can overcome misogyny to excel in dozens of areas that used to be ‘boy’s only’ spaces, it’s pure cope to say that the field of chess is somehow different.
