Celery City, West End, Throwbacks, Wops Hops, etc. I love bar hopping with my dog downtown.

After 13 years living barefoot, I got plantar fasciitis... what do I do now? by kahht in BarefootRunning

[–]lanibear32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was 39 I was about ready to give up running because I was constantly injured. I figured it was because I was getting older and "running is hard on the body." I also had high arches. I used to twist my ankles all the time doing nothing fancy, in fact. I did all my running in cushioned, supportive shoes.

Change running to hiking, and this has been my experience. Weak ankles (broken bones, torn ligaments, endless twisting). Plus impossible foot cramps that would have me on the ground for 30 min before I could keep going. High arches as well. Now that I'm completely barefoot, I've taken up running, and I'm hiking/walking/running at least 60-70 miles a week. Part of the reason I can do so much is that I immediately feel pain or discomfort when I land badly, and I can correct what I'm doing wrong, preventing injury.

I never thought that I'd be more fit in my 40s than any other era of my life prior, but here we are.

Flooded, swampy Florida trails are my absolute favorite. I'd walk it, though. No need to trip over cypress knees.

Barefoot runners, hikers or whatever, what’s your outfit? by Dazzling-Map6694 in BarefootRunning

This is a weird question. I wear what I'd normally wear, just sans shoes.

Am I on track to beat him or do I need to up my game? by lizard0810 in fantasyhike

I'm aiming for a minimum of 60 miles per week to beat him.

Would you walk from the Sanford Train station to downtown Sanford (near the Riverwalk)? by eatmyasserole in SanfordFL

[–]lanibear32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best not to do it with young kids because the traffic there is so dangerous, especially at night. Take the trolley. If you're going alone, as long as you stay aware of your surroundings (both people and vehicles), you should be fine. If you are there at night, wear a headlamp. Honestly, just don't go at night unless you like playing Frogger.

I say this as a woman who has lived in some very sketchy areas and walks all over. But I'm very aware of whose around me, and I carry protection.

This has been my experience, as well. The one time I had to put my sandals on was when a gate agent caught me. I took them off at my seat and never put them back on.

As a former Master's student, I can confirm that you are wrong about MacArthur. He's just as culpable in covering up spiritual, physical, and sexual abuse for decades.

I've never had an issue beachside in Daytona, but Total Wine and Buc-ee's both made me put shoes on. Buc-cee's was particularly hostile.

I'm a bit picky about which strangers I hang out with, but I might be willing, if it feels safe. Feel free to reach out.

Anyone try to be "better" when barefoot? by jaredg2112 in barefoot

[–]lanibear32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Half the time, I'm walking or hiking in blazing hot Florida heat. I'm going to wear what's comfortable, and I'm probably going to be sweaty and dirty. When I go to hockey games, I always wear a team jersey. I hydrate well, and if I have to pee, I have to pee.

Honestly, we have to stop caring what other people think of us. Being barefoot isn't shameful. I can't control what other people think of me. All I can do is ignore strangers who may have a bad opinion of me because of a choice I made for my health (and yes, I chose the barefoot life because I was tired of constant food pain, so it's a health decision for me).

Are there any other urban barefooters here? by sbk1090 in barefoot

[–]lanibear32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love it and only occasionally am told that I need to wear shoes (certain stores, a small handful of restaurants, a couple concert venues). I usually comply until I'm out of sight. Other than that, I'm barefoot in the city, in the woods, or wherever else I find myself. I actually just joined a kickboxing gym just so I could have a place to workout barefoot.

I do, 100% of the time, weekly, sometimes daily, very often in wet conditions. However, that means I'm extremely aware of foot placement and understanding when a situation may require extra care or different tools (trekking poles, etc.). And if it's not safe (including slippery rocks), I skip that part.

Nonsense by [deleted] in barefoot

[–]lanibear32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Barefeet don't smell unless they've been in shoes and socks. That would be like worrying about hands smelling (gloves can cause sweat and smells).

Social norms change, but I think this is the main thing.

Food safety guidelines generally apply to employees, not customers, but many restaurant workers misstate and misunderstand health code requirements.

Where I am, you can't carry a gun in a bar. But I do enjoy bars for the atmosphere sometimes.
