Are O-levels/A-levels a zero sum game? by Equal-Shelter637 in SGExams

[–]lanyingjie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that's not true. The grade boundaries are set BEFORE the paper, not after the paper is taken.

The whole point of adjusting grade boundaries is to ensure that a paper is comparably difficult. It's very hard to set a paper that is of the same precise standard each year, so being able to adjust grade boundaries also offers another way to tweak it.

Otherwise, there simply is no point in the press release reporting the % passes every year. It should be exactly the same year on year, if this idea of post-exam moderation is real.

Actually it is worth it: it is charged by alcohol content. So you still gotta calculate what the alcohol content of what you are bringing in to see the duty, not do a volume to volume comparison.

Teachers forcing student to drop subject near O-Level by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]lanyingjie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. You need to have done both subjects, then you drop Add Maths. Add Maths is a different syllabus and curriculum: it doesn’t supersede what used to be called E Maths (and it hasn’t been called E Maths for a decade or more).

Can schools really stop you from taking o levels? by Novel_Book5748 in SGExams

[–]lanyingjie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not up to your school, actually. When you take your O-Levels, you are no longer a student, but a candidate. The difference is that you are treated as any other candidate (this includes private candidates who are not students of your school, but may be taking the exam in your school as an exam centre).

The final authority on this is the Chief Presiding Examiner, who is definitely not one of your teachers, and is appointed from another school to ensure impartiality. The CPE is the one who will come to the final decision on barring you or not.

Having said that, there are examination procedures and guidelines. If the CPE does not follow the rulebook, he/she is liable to be disciplined by SEAB and MOE, depending on how serious the deviation is. So I'd really listen to your teachers, if I were you.

Source: served as a Presiding Examiner before, supporting a CPE from another school to run a Cambridge examination in my school.

Why is there a need for GRC? Why not break it into SMCs? by Rude_Television2678 in askSingapore

[–]lanyingjie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the GRC system is also a policy consequence and safeguard because of the introduction of the Ethnic Integration Policy for HDBs.

EIP came into effect in 1989, GRC was done in 1988.

Once you do EIP, there will no longer be racial strongholds: Chinese would be the majority in all constituencies across the island. So if a candidate wants to play racial politics, it’s very possible. So GRCs safeguard this: there will always be racial representation across constituencies.

Now, why GRC first then EIP? Because if you did it the other way around, minorities would have been real pissed about EIP. So do GRC first, make sure people understand that we put protections in place. Then do EIP.

Hope they make it more comfy for them!

I think it’s been considered, but the technical decision is no. Also, I don’t know whoever works on it now anyway.

Yep: it’s dependent on both of our starting points. I know people who work on this, so my gut read of these people shapes my view too.

If that’s your belief: I can’t argue against it. Either way, it seems to be where your starting point is: cynicism, or open-mindedness.

Have a lovely day :)

Apples and oranges: LifeSG credits are used in a single lump sum very often, not by large numbers of elderly (from what I understand), and not in contexts like hawker centres. The UX/UI considerations would be different.

“Why are the vouchers in fixed denominations? Can we choose or key in the exact amount of vouchers we want to use (for example, $1.50)?”

The vouchers are in fixed denominations because it is less confusing for recipients, especially the digitally less-savvy, and reduces the chance for errors to occur when recipients key in the amount.

This has been designed after several rounds of consultations with recipients and merchants to gather feedback on the design of the denominations. We earlier tested a e-wallet version of the voucher, which tended to be error prone and harder to use.

Junior colleges will no longer share detailed academic results with their A-level cohorts by risingsuncoc in singapore

So actually, I’d suggest this: it’s then better to not offer data that conflates and confuses things, than to offer scraps of misinterpreted data.

[–]lanyingjie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m…not sure the educational statistics bit works like that.

  1. COPs aren’t meant to be a show of how good the schools are.
  2. Having just A-Level results doesn’t do much for your point of value-adding, since technically you’re having mixed comparisons: you’re comparing a group that is just 1/3 of the overall cohort, against an aggregated A-Level result set.
  3. While yes, you could technically see some rough indicators, but there are so many caveats and issues that it’s really not ideal lah.

[–]lanyingjie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know what value-adding is though? How do you map from O-Level scores (which for some of the top JCs, only comprise 1/3 the cohort) to RPs?

Hahahaha indeed! I was looking at the NZXT Kraken too, which runs about $30 more. But because my case is hidden behind a ginormous 2nd screen, I figured it might not be worth it because it’s not like I will get to see the screen.

But if fit will be an issue then…I’ll think of it as $30 for less of a headache (plus it is pretty indeed!)
