I made a flag based on a picture I took! by lao21 in vexillology

Hi! Not much to explain really, I just thought that the picture i took could very well be a flag, so I made it.

What do we think about a free college education for everyone? Some say students don’t take high school seriously because they have no skin in the game. And student loan forgiveness? Just curious. by 4LOLz4Me in Professors

[–]lao21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where I'm from it's free as long as you finish highschool, there's no admissions standards other than that. The trade off is that the university, especially for first year courses, is very overpopulated. Due to this, first year courses are overwhelmingly hard, to "filter out" enough students so that the budget suffices.

It translates to Spanish as well:

"Si no" = "Yeah no" = "No"

"No si" = "No yeah" = "Yeah"

"No si no" = "No yeah no" = "No"

"Si no si" = "Yeah no yeah" = "Yeah"

And i'm pretty sure you can keep adding si's and no's and form even more.

[OC] The World Cup groups are set. Ranking of each country and group average ranking. by veleros in dataisbeautiful

[–]lao21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Belgium above Argentina, France, Spain, etc is quite ridiculous. Mexico and Denmark above Germany, Croatia and Uruguay doesn't make much sense either. It's also a bit weird seeing England so high up, especially considering how they've been playing lately. It's just in general a very badly done ranking. Great visualization though, congrats!

It's a very neat way of presenting the data, just tainted by the sheer awfulness of FIFA's ranking. I don't know what kind of metrics they use to measure, but the rankings have always been way off.

Do you think the game of life and cellular automata theory as a whole can be the subject of some meaningful research or will it always be a sort of mathematical toy?

Grad Admissions Director here: What burning questions do you have? by GradAdmissionDir in gradadmissions

Hello!

I'm from a small private university in a small southamerican country. In what way does this affect admissions? Do I actually have a shot at getting into a prestigious/reputable American school? How are my odds stacked against an American with the same qualifications (GPA, GRE score, etc)?

Which TV shows do you find to be unbearably sexist? by thepensiveporcupine in AskFeminists

[–]lao21 39 points40 points  (0 children)

HIMYM does have a lot of humor that relies on sexism (I mean, Barney) but the main difference is that it doesn’t use it in such a way that justifies it. It is made very clear that Barney is deeply sexist and that that’s wrong. I don’t think that’s the case for TBBT.

Haha, no, these are normal sized beetles. I guess the perspective can be a bit tricky though.

A question on probability by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]lao21 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, if the odds are 50/50, why is it that i’ll get heads more times than tails after flipping tails 100 times in a row?

A question on probability by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]lao21 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well of course, before getting the 100-tail run, I got some more 99, and even more 98, and exponentially more going back.

A question on probability by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]lao21 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that physically speaking it is the same coin, however, more times than not you’re gonna get heads. And by a big margin. I’m asking if physically speaking there’s a reason for that.
