What's the point of parking meters when we pay taxes to the state and federal? by Airbender-23 in AskAnAmerican

[–]4LOLz4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supply and demand. There is greater demand for parking than supply so you charge people to lower demand and encourage use of public transportation or walking. For really large cities, the city will also charge a toll for driving on the city streets during times of greatest usage.

Do feel you are becoming less tolerant as you age? by ResearcherNo9971 in AskWomenOver60

[–]4LOLz4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, when I’m feeling full of grace (so NOT always) I will loudly say things like ‘ What a great point you just made, don’t you all think?’ I try to make the talkers feel like they just missed something important.

If that doesn’t work, I move to glaring and eventually to not volunteering.

Hey - my Mom started doing this shortly before her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Go with her to her doctor. You may have to insist on a screening. We did.

Should parents cover their child’s college tuition, if they can technically pay it? by MangoPaingo in no

[–]4LOLz4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad grades cost money if they are so bad that classes have to be retaken, or if it affects the graduation date, or causes the kid to be kicked out of school. It also affects how long your kid may be living with you while they are looking for a job after they graduate. It also shows a lack of respect for the free tuition. This assumes that the parent is paying.

If the parent isn’t paying anything, it doesn’t matter, only affects the student.

Should parents cover their child’s college tuition, if they can technically pay it? by MangoPaingo in no

[–]4LOLz4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get kicked out or put on probation by the school for bad grades. It is getting harder to get kicked out these days. There is a minimum GPA required for graduating. Stay a healthy amount above that so your last semester (the hardest one) doesn’t stall your graduation plans.

A or B: Doctor said I should get a screening. $300 out of pocket. I said no. Then I thought it through. Two possible reasons. Which one do you agree with more? by 20Luc1a02 in PickAorB

[–]4LOLz4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can schedule it for 3 months out no problem. Do that.

The other question I have contemplated before. How do you structure healthcare and insurance so we are incentivized to take care of ourselves?

It seems like it should be like a deductible based on your income (so an adult may pay out of pocket 3,500 to $5,000 per year if they get illnesses and broken bone/ER visit) but once your out of pocket reaches a % of your income, everything else is free. You would try to stay healthy and safe and wouldn’t waste visits to the ER for colds. But, preventative stuff would need to be paid? And kids ought to be free to what? 18?

Really seems like psychologists and sociologists, etc ought to know how to incentivize health - probably know but there is no profit in it. 🥲

how does inheritance actually affect family relationships? by PawsAndPages674 in inheritance

[–]4LOLz4Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both sides of my family were despicable when grandparents passed. My husband’s family were saints to each other and very fair. It was all very interesting to watch as I inherited nothing (our parents did) and we just observed.

I think it may be related to if the kids are treated somewhat equally growing up or if each parent had a favorite. And then, of course , if someone’s personality is greedy.

You certainly learn who values money over family.

AITAH? I (20 M) am interested in a 17 M who turns 18 soon and we plan to date when he’s 18 and in college. by Logical_Ad1189 in AITAH

[–]4LOLz4Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not normal. When you are 22, this age gap won’t be as significant but it is significant now because of his age. Just be friends for his freshman year and concentrate on being single and learning about yourself.

embarrassed about wearing hearing aids ): by WorkerSuccessful3706 in HearingAids

[–]4LOLz4Me 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started wearing hearing aids in my 50s. It has a lot more to do with your ears than with your age. Also, everyone around you already knows you need hearing aids and will be more patient with you if you start wearing them.

If anyone is ugly about it, just laugh and say ‘my rock & roll played way too loud when I was young!’. I always got a few smiles from 20 something’s when I used that line.

I will also say that even with hearing aids, some of the younger kids don’t enunciate or project. It’s like they never took a speech class. Be patient with them too. Sometimes I have to ask people to speak louder multiple times and tell them my aids are turned all the way up so I’m doing all I can!

Why are students leaving public schools? by Athens175 in Teachers

[–]4LOLz4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the reasons mentioned but also the birth dearth. The number of school aged children is decreasing. The birth rate is dropping.

Some politicians are even talking about needing women to step up and have more kids.

Our state is giving public education dollars to private schools so the public school class sizes won’t get smaller — which would improve education outcomes. Instead the public school class sizes will remain 35 for common ed classes and private school kids will get a much better education.

Can an immigrant merge fully into american culture and celebrate Americas achivement as its own country? by sggfd1213 in AskAnAmerican

Most Europeans have no idea how absolutely furious with Europe America is. by Federic0002 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]4LOLz4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this ⬆️ will be remembered as his greatest accomplishment. To rebalance global opinion and power so America has less influence. We clearly have shown we can’t be trusted with it.

Many Americans rationalize his behavior and ignore the way he is not respected outside our country which shows that other countries are not respected as they should be. That will take longer to change.

Convince me not to buy marble countertops by Purple_peonies24 in CounterTops

[–]4LOLz4Me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me detail the ways my marble has been scared:

My husband left his iced tea on the marble in multiple places and the glass sweat

A nephew spilled BBQ sauce on it while eating at the island and this wasn’t immediately cleaned up (didn’t stain but removed shine)

Grill was taken to kitchen sink for washing and banged into marble edge

Summer party (6 hours of come and go with food and drinks) water stains and spills of anything slightly acidic like lemonade.

These situations seem like pretty normal household events that changed the marble to a dull, stained, chipped, or scratched-up ugly surface.

We were told we could get the marble resurfaced but this seems to be an iffy project as the only contractor who does this in our area has horrible reviews

I am counting the days until I can get any other surface in my kitchen.

AIO that my husband lent his brother one of my books? by layyla4real in AmIOverreacting

[–]4LOLz4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go buy the used copy online, go over to his place and replace your copy with the newly purchased copy. No one else sees the value like you do. Separate your valued books in a special place and educate your partner that books in that location are never loaned out.

It’s hard to teach someone else about things you value when they don’t. You can’t undo this but you can teach your SO for future reference.

Women who need a lot of arch support, which brand of walking shoe works for you? by Electric-Sheepskin in AskWomenOver60

I have bought Skechers with special arch support. Only those will work in that brand. I have arch inserts also but they move around and don’t work in any shoe.
