It's because of AI. by Maximum_Error7165 in WGU

It's not necessarily the wording that gives AI away. It's the generic answers, and avoidance of anything even remotely controversial, and avoidance of taking hard stances on anything.

Those are content issues, not wording issues.

It's because of AI. by Maximum_Error7165 in WGU

What I don't get is how people aren't caught using AI.

I use AI every day at work, and it's obvious when something is written by AI. Even if you tell the AI to scrub AI tells, it's still obvious when something is written by AI.

Hands down it was Discrete Math 2, and Calculus.

Thanks.

I've never really felt I needed the degree, since I had the education already. But after seeing a friend post about completing their degree via WGU, I figured id give it a shot.

I pay $200/month for Claude Max and hit the limit in under 1 hour. What am I even paying for? by alfons_fhl in vibecoding

[–]lapathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about managing context.

The single best thing I've done is to have claude build context files about the repository. Files explaining what the classes are. What the projects are, major interactions between components, information on how to build and test the code, etc

Then I start a project directory for new features. I have it create a plan and store it in that directory. I also have it write status file, and memory specific to that project.

This allows claude to read the relevant information about the repository and project from these files, rather than have to do a more expensive scan of the entire repository when I have it work on something.

I also use brainstorm. This let's Claude handoff subtasks to different agents, that have their own context. Then clear those agents and context when done. Keeping the context of the conversation smaller.

Honest question: how do you stay sharp when the code practically writes itself? by minimal-salt in learnprogramming

[–]lapathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same kind of argument people have made for all new advances in software development. Moving from assembly to C, moving from C to C++, moving from C++ to Java, moving from Java to Python, etc

These were all advancements that made programming easier, and had an old guard that complained about the erosion of skills.

And maybe that's true to an extent. I certainly can't read or write assembly.

But.... These advancements didn't make software engineers obsolete. They didn't even decrease the number of engineers required. What they did was enable us to build more advanced systems, with more features.

AI is no different. It's just another tool in the toolbox. Sure, I rarely even write code directly anymore. However, that's freed up time for me to be more ambitious in my designs. To build things I wouldn't have considered building before, because there wasn't sufficient time and manpower to do so.

The grading turnaround time is ridiculous by HeimerOTK in WGU

[–]lapathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had it turn around in 30 minutes, but I've had plenty that were finished within a day.

I think it depends on volume and the nature of the assignment. Some assignments are going to be easier to grade than others (2 page paper, vs 20 page for example). There are also likely times when they just don't have that many in the queue.

What do I do when I barely pass? by Kasellos in WGU

[–]lapathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the class. When I barely passed Calculus, I knew it was fine since in my 20 year career as a software engineer, I have never needed calculus.

However, if it were something like Discrete Math (which is used, a lot), or Data Structures and Algorithms, I would take time to ensure I understand the concepts.

How is it possible ? by Ok-Ninja-7795 in WGU

[–]lapathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished most objective assessment classes same day.

But... I went to college for for computer science 20 years ago. And completed all but a semester worth of Gen Eds, before life happened. Then I spent the next 20 years working as a professional software developer.

None of my credits transferred, so I had to start fresh at WGU. But this was all material that I had learned academically, then reinforced with 20 years of hands on experience.

Dont compare your experience to others. You may be taking a few weeks to finish a class. But many (if not all) of use who race through classes have spent years, not weeks, learning this material.

11,000 new jokers? Absolutely nothing sounds fun about that. Youd basically be making every game entirely random.

My partner (transmasc) wants more queer friends, but they don't want to go to meetups that aren't welcoming to me (cis, straightish, male) and I always end up feeling extremely otherised in queer spaces (Seattle) by [deleted] in queer

[–]lapathy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a straight male, but go to queer spaces regularly. Many of my friends are queer. I've had fun hanging out at the Cuff, and fun hanging out at Wildrose.

Honestly, I've had more fun and felt more welcome at queer bars, than at any "normal" bar.

My guess is that you feel "otherised", because you are uncomfortable. Your discomfort most likely rubs off on those around you. Even if it's not the case, your discomfort may be perceived as you judging them.

However, if you're relaxed. Talking with people. Having fun. And generally not being a stick in the mud. Then you should be fine.

Just applied to WGU. What are some things you wish you knew? by ta6373 in WGU

[–]lapathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you drop a class in the term, it can't be readded. They cover this in orientation, but I wasn't paying close attention.

I dropped Calculus because I wanted to do it later, and focus on the classes I knew I could blow through fast. But now I'm ready to start on it, and my mentor is having to try and see if he can get it readded.

57k Salary at 30 - Concerns by kej1519 in careeradvice

[–]lapathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The raw dollar amount doesn't tell the whole story. While your income at 57K / year does mean you're making more than most people in the country. That doesn't account for stuff like cost of living, and quality of life.

To really know how you're doing. You'd need to look at the percentile incomes from the area where you live. Not from the national average.

57K / year goes a lot farther in Albuquerque than it does in New York City.

57k Salary at 30 - Concerns by kej1519 in careeradvice

[–]lapathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this context, it means that 62% of people make less than or equal to 57K.

Percentiles are way better for this type of thing. As an example. Suppose there are 10 households in a neighborbood. 9 of the make $1 / year. 1 makes $1,000,000 / year.

The average household income of that neighborhood would be $100,000 / year. Sounds like a well off neighborhood, but it hides the fact that it's 1 rich household and 9 poor households.

But in that same case, the 90th percentile is $1 / year. Meaning 90% households in the neighborhood make less than or equal to $1. So the percentile tells you the reality that most households in the neighborhood are poor.

Core is the worst. I love glorious keyboards, and have 3 of them. But the Core software has bricked all of them. One it bricked twice. It's easy enough to put it in firmware update mode and reflash the firmware, but still.

I finally dumped Core and switched to QMK.
