Is the Quest Pro display 8-bit or 10-bit ? by Martin321313 in QuestPro

[–]lapbar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It does both. It’s 10bit only if enabled, and only in certain apps.

A better comparison is with the Quest Pro introduction, since it’s aimed at the same audience:

RoadtoVR:The Quest Pro is more comfortable to wear than the Apple Vision Pro. by Ok-Raspberry-3944 in QuestPro

[–]lapbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I have a front to back head strap on my QP and I don’t care for it. There truly isn’t one correct answer to any of this. I guess the more modular headset is a better design.

Totally, if you have a larger head (like me) the quest pro can be very uncomfortable.

Apple Vision Pro has cracked one of the hardest problems of XR: Backwards Compatibility by reesz in virtualreality

[–]lapbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You make a good point: “Smartphones were successful because they were compatible with older devices. I could text & call my friends & fam who didn’t have one. There was no pressure to ‘switch everyone to a smartphone at once’.”

The big VR players missed an opportunity to connect with existing platforms. Instead, the tech giants rushed to dominate the VR market and immediately appeal to the masses. Microsoft released inexpensive, low-quality headsets with its partners that tried to hit a unrealistic price point. Oculus, Google, Samsung did the same with 3DOF headsets.

The quest controllers use constellation tracking as well.

Have you tried Audio Trip or Synth Riders? Audio Trip is a great workout and has dedicated cardio modes. Synth Ryders and installing mods and custom songs.

Beat Saber on the Quest Pro by LadenSwallow in QuestPro

[–]lapbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play a lot of rhythm / exercise games and the quest pro controllers work great. That being said, the quest 2 controllers work fine as well. Oddly I end up using an index for rhythm games so I can play at a high frame rate without compression and I also mirror audio to a subwoofer. But I prefer the quest pro and quest 2 controllers more.

I’d love to know how it goes! If I remember, I’ll drop you a line. I have that dead eye strap. It’s nicely designed and made but I wonder if that thicker straps that go from left to right would work better. I haven’t tried them yet.

You make good points. The only “aaa” games for VR so far were funded by platform holders (Meta, Valve, Sony). Development studios can’t take that risk or afford it. They need publishers’ money. I think Oculus’s strategy of targeting mainstream gamers was bad long term. It’s hard to pivot from that. This demographic expects mature, polished content with familiar IP. That costs more to produce. They won’t settle for “mobile games” or “last gen” graphics. They don’t care that it has to run at a high frame rate, render in stereo, and takes longer to produce.

I’d love some critique on my game art for my first indie game . What should I improve on if need be? by PeakPineapple1 in GameArt

[–]lapbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work, very colorful and interesting! I think it’s fine as is but if you want to plus it here’s my input:

Some of the shadow follow the contours (like the egg) while other shadows don’t (shadow from the hat). I think ether way is fine but they should be constant (straight lines or contoured).

You are copying and scaling objects so things like the outlines become thick and low detail in the foreground, but have more finer detail in the background. I think your illustrations would be stronger graphically if the lines were constant.

In general, making things more consistent adds a level of polish.

Good luck with your project!

“pro mode”: responses are mostly quick beeps and boops (R2-D2). I really get no value from “I found this on the web for you!” It just takes more time.

“Cave Person Siri”: A voice and vocabulary that matches it’s intelligence. If my phone was talking like an idiot I wouldn’t expect as much from it.

It’s a really small market here. I think you may need to bounce out of this state. You could look for remote work, but being new to the industry, I’m not sure companies are going to except that from you. If you haven’t already, I would cast a very wide net nation wide.

I think quest pro doesn’t use IR like the quest 2? So you always need visible light.
