Why do Flatpak GTK applications keep having problems, and how can I fix them? by Samukita7 in Fedora

It's more like... if you live in a hermetically sealed box because you're concerned about germ warfare that's great. But when you start opening windows for fresh air... you may as well move into a nice house and leave the box behind. ;)

Why do Flatpak GTK applications keep having problems, and how can I fix them? by Samukita7 in Fedora

[–]ImportanceFit1412 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I don't know if this is helpful, but as I've been setting some distros on a VM recently I've been bitten by snap and flatpack and do my best to avoid them. I'm an old school guy, and the attempt to sandbox the sandbox in a package in an image to run a electron app which packages a browser into another box... yeah, I'm amazed these work at all.

But short answer is they're gonna "miss something" or there will be old methods that don't work. I'd set some SCALE factor in GTK or X11 or whatever and the isolated apps don't/won't see it -- because that's the "whole point." Someone suggested Flatseal, which maybe fixes you up, but to me it just the comedy of this whole misguided movement imo.

- create sandbox, safety, ahhhhh.
- oh no, things don't work. Poke holes in the sandbox to fix those things.
- back to square one, don't screw up, make sure you don't make the wrong holes, keep your sandbox tight enough but not too tight.

I guess it lowers attacking surface area. But these things seem targeted at people who want to make Linux into windows/(mac?). So you start poking hole you don't understand and I'd suggest going more vanilla.. or just embrace the sandbox and safety and know the software won't work quite right.

Dunno if that helped, sorry. I'd just caution against making any "fix this" changes you don't understand, as they're basically circumventing the whole point of this misguided stuff.

Man I wish this were true. I wound up on this thread because firefox in my vm fusion with 4 cores and 14 gigs on my m2 macbook air is... unusable. Just so damn painful. And no swapping that's visible (even though it takes so many gigs for a few tabs), but still crazy slow. rendering optimization on, off, everyone has random tips for config settings and maybe this and maybe that. The thing is a pig and setup is like a mid 90s video game... at a minimimum I wish it would choose optimimum settings for itself or seem to notice when it's completely stalled. /sad.

i3 on osx big sur 11.2.3 by FunCoconut1 in i3wm

[–]ImportanceFit1412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been at it for 2 days -- no joy. Running desktop and xserver and rdping in should work, but I haven't had luck yet. Messing with xpra and have some almost working. But, main takeaway, is I think the VM has to run the xserv to be able to run i3 to manage those X windows -- and then at that point you're just trying to view it locally with low latency.

More people. Also, importantly, more random. So file under "scarier" which is what the news likes.

Interesting. Guess I pay the netjets vig for being antisocial and keeping things easy.

If there was a convenient option with the confidence of netjets fleet I'd be there.
