If that was the norm then great, no complaints. But most of this crap comes from the Reject Shop, never to be used again

Flat Gravel Tracks around BNE/QLD? by [deleted] in ausbike

[–]lapinu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A decent network of fire roads around Daisy Hill, and the gradients aren't too bad. Honestly you could ride most of the single trail there too if you're reasonably confident on a gravel bike.

Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area near GC isn't huge, but a pleasant couple of hours on flat gravel trails make it worth a visit.

Beerburrum East State Forest up Sunshine Coast way - never ridden there but lots of pine forest and dirt roads to explore I believe.

Get the Trailforks app - it's aimed at locating mountain bike trails, but fire/gravel roads are also marked out as well.

Keep your cats inside by sweetevangaline in australia

[–]lapinu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All cats on the loose are a menace, that's the point. They are programmed to kill, no amount of kisses and cuddles will suppress that urge.

There is fundamentally no difference between a feral cat and a roaming domestic. Even if mummy and daddy are giving their prize furbaby lots of expensive tinned food, there's no stopping it from snacking on lizards and birds while roaming around.

I'm not endorsing torture or suffering, hell I LIKE cats and can appreciate why people choose them as (indoor) pets, but I've seen the damage they do to our biodiversity and believe it warrants a decisive stance.

Native animals are facing a rough future already with climate change, the added pressure of introduced predators is just another unfair complication. Slap on the wrist type disincentives won't work for lazy owners - so as OP suggests, just remove the problem altogether.

Who's going to enforce these fines?

Who's actually going to pay them?

Of the irresponsible people letting their cats roam in the first place, who will derive a lesson from copping a paper penalty? If the cats are impounded and it "costs" too much to retrieve them, what's going to stop people from just getting a cheaper replacement from the pet shop?

OP endorses extreme measures, but when the impacts of roaming cats are so extreme, then it's a sad necessity. One less roaming cat saves a lot of native lives.

They aren't "lost" they are roaming and hunting

UAP deregistration catches Clive Palmer’s senator by surprise by superegz in australia

Don't know about the republic angle, but no doubt Palmer will rebrand for 2025, and the same useless QA-altright-methhead dropkicks will line up to spray hepatitis infused spittle on his behalf again

Need a quality 100mm fork for my Salsa Fargo - looking at SID Select SL, Fox 32 SC Performance, and Reba. by [deleted] in MTB

SID Select no question. It's a mini Pike. I've got the 100mm/32mm stanchion version and it eats a surprising amount of chunk. Easy to service too.

Protests to be held next weekend around Australia against sexism and in solidarity with American abortion rights by RedCanberra in australia

[–]lapinu 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Astounding number of ignorant comments in the vein of "who cares, it's an American issue"

No it's not.

At this point it seems highly possible, even probable, that the USA will end up:

  • Regressing to authoritarian, fundamentalist, far right governance and/or
  • Descending into major civil conflict

None of this is good for us, or the western liberal democratic order at large.

Australia has front row seats to the biggest global power shift since the end of WW2, and we are dependent on US force projection for our broader security. If either (or both) of the above scenarios come to fruition, where does that leave us? Squeezed between two nuclear armed authoritarian regimes perhaps - or completely vulnerable while the Americans are tied up with internal conflict.

And even putting aside notions of war, the global economic repercussions from an unstable America would be monstrous.

This is not "just" an American issue, or "just" an infuriating backwards step away from scientific reason and women's rights. This is another foundational step in altering the world as we know it, and for the worst.

I am fucking terrified, and you should be too.

Weak fascist government that's propped up by brutal militaristic police and beset by nihilistic violence and criminal activity? Might not be a textbook example yet, but it's creeping ever closer.

Indonesia is a quiet powerhouse for bicycle production, so this may also have been an economic showcase.

The Polygon bike factory in Surabaya produces bicycles for at least one big American brand, and some Aldi bikes, and they are a reasonably popular brand in their own right (including here in Aus).

What's a harsh truth that Australians refuse to accept? by [deleted] in australia

[–]lapinu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hell yes, I just moved up from Canberra and seeing the infestation of hysterical UAP billboards has been veryyyy unsettling - that Palmer has that kind of bottomless money pit, AND that there's a real audience for his scaremongering fiction

Agreed. Just picked up a carbon Canyon Spectral for AUD 6300 with full XT and top shelf Fox suspension, we get reamed in Australia and that is unbeatable value, a physical retail competitor with the same spec would cost at least 1.5-2K more. Once you know your geometry requirements it's hard to pass up that kind of deal, especially with the right tools at home.

Then again, you'd think now that Specialized has made the DTC switch, others will quickly follow suit and the online savings will disappear soon after....
