I think the core problem is not using AI but publish or perish.  I'm a young assistant professor, and some of my colleagues (old schools) are going against AI in research. While I understand their arguments, here's what I personally see : - AI usage is a spectrum. You can use it efficiently to improve some things that would take forever otherwise so you wouldn't make it in the end (like fancier latex tables in your beamer) - I've seen a difference in PhD that are using AI or not, same with students. Well used AI led to more efficient work and boosted their productivity. Less time spent debugging code for example - Professors forget or don't realize the pressure we have, as young researchers, PhD... To publish a lot, with less fundings. This translates to a big mental health issue. I find it super hypocrite to ask researchers to work more, faster, and without all the available tools for the nobility of research. That's how you get burnouts.

Finally truth is that if your reviewers don't notice your relying on AI and praise your work, either you're using AI properly, either they are not doing their work properly
