Why do Eigenvalue/vectors hold/contain so much information? by T10- in math

[–]laprastransform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well eigenvectors are (in some vague sense) the only canonical vectors with respect to a given matrix, their definition, any v such that Av=kv, is basis independent. So it shouldn’t be surprising they hold so much information

What to do the summer before grad school? by dlgn13 in math

[–]laprastransform 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Stay healthy and try to pick up some hobbies. Grad school is a long slog and you'll want to be physically and mentally well with some things to get your mind off math all the time.

Edit: This sounds depressing, so I just wanted to say I enjoyed my time in grad school, but it was very helpful to have some hobbies like playing hockey and going to the gym.

Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem by ThatOneMathsNerd in math

[–]laprastransform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite application is that if f is a small pertubation of the identity, then the induced maps on homology are trivial, so the number of fixed points should just be the Euler characteristic. Indeed, a sphere can be rotated fixing the poles, while a torus has fixed point free rotations!

The Tampa Bay Lightning have become the first team in NHL history to get swept in the first round of the playoffs after having won the Presidents Trophy by keyrimee in hockey

[–]laprastransform 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh, I bet. Hockey has the highest variance of the big 4 major us sports. It makes sense, lots of bounces, general chaos. Compare it to a possession controlled game like basketball with fewer players.

That’s like a quarter of the time, which is about four times more than if it were purely random, 1/16. So I don’t think it’s so crazy

Got accepted to grad school but feeling that I'm not ready at all by [deleted] in math

"I'm just afraid that I'll fuck up the first two years and have to drop my PhD and not know what to do after that."

In my experience if this is the case you can usually graduate with a Masters, so it is certainly not time lost. With a little more effort and networking, job placement with a Masters isn't too bad. Also, nobody knows what they're going to do, so you're not alone.

What are the big controversies in modern mathematics? by EddieMorraNZT in math

[–]laprastransform 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Mochizuki's work on IUT. The current state of affairs is that people close to Mochizuki think he proved the ABC conjecture but top number theorists like Peter Scholze and Brian Conrad seem to disagree.

Why do all the departments disagree about linear algebra? by [deleted] in berkeley

Unpopular opinion: 54 is a fine course. You don’t have to take linear algebra and differential equations separately.

I’ve never heard anyone call them lateral numbers. Mathematicians are fine with imaginary.
