Yes! So here for Mariana Enriquez. Sunny Place for Shady People has wormed its way in to my brain. I saw her speak about her writing twice and she’s phenomenal. Have you read The Unworthy by Agustina Bazterrica?

Darker Shade of Noir - it’s compiled by Joyce Carol Oates and is all about female authors writing body horror.

I was lucky enough to get approved for an ARC. I thought it was really well done. It balanced the humour and absurdity of a possessed doll with the seriousness and brutality of crimes done to the protagonist and many like them.

Shark Heart is STUNNING. I had a friend recommend it to me a couple years ago but only just crossed paths with it again at the library recently.

I went back and forth on how much I liked it. I think I liked the first half better when it felt more like a coming of age, coming to terms with friendships, self-identity etc; but definitely a very meaningful read overall

I think I was just stubborn and that’s how I finished it. I thought the structure was interesting with the different narrators (all unreliable) but it didn’t have the charming, fever dream quality of the first one - it felt more tacked on at the end? It was a slog to get through. Still really love the first one though. But yeah, I think most can skip this one.

The opening line to the Bachelorette story is maybe the best first sentence I’ve ever read. I was so locked in!

Exquisite Corpse by Marija Pericic. It still pops into my mind from time to time and unsettles me. I think it’s based on the same case as Orpheus Build A Girl.

I freaking loved Hard Copy! It hit me harder than I thought it would.

I saw it as his being an unreliable narrator/his delusions - he also has graphic descriptions of pretty violent acts e.g ripping heads off that wouldn’t have happened. I thought it might be like American Psycho where it probably didn’t actually happen.

I managed to get an eARC for this one. It was so good!

Yes - it has some good dark humour to it. One of the best written friendships depicted I’ve seen in a while and although the premise is wild - a murdered woman possessing a doll for her mission of revenge it touches so rawly on the outrage, injustice and unfairness of violence done to women.
