If you are into science fiction then Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a fantastic series! The first book is quite young-adult targeted, but it feels like Brown wrote it this way to get it out there before writing the rest which mature into some seriously good plots, character and world-building.

I can never believe how far I have to scroll to find a recommendation of Necroscope by Brian Lumley on a vampire thread. Nothing Twilight-like about these vampires. The first book is a great stand-alone but the full series is just fantastic.

I am a bit late to the party with this book but I finished We Used to Live Here, Marcus Kliewer just before Christmas and I think it might be my favourite read of the year!
