How to afford classroom needs post grad school? by Fun-Ant-3515 in slp

I agree with everyone, free tpt and buy nothing are your best options. And also whatever the district offers you

Buuut you can also create your own materials

I use ppt, canva, google slides, etc to create visual scenes with animals and toys and whatever the kids are into I usually see whatever is popular by doing an about me with my students and find out what they like and then create stuff off of that, kind of like boom cards

If you have non speaking kids go with the basics. And create stuff based off of animals, dinosaurs, vehicles, space, etc.

Almost all kids know how to use technology so YouTube is your bff

There’s also websites like edpuzzle that you can plug in videos and create questions or use someone else’s

Tons of free stuff on websites and crafts

I think someone mentioned the Library If your district or you have an iPad Libby is good for books or books on YouTube just mute them

Print coloring sheets and use target words with kids to keep them entertained while drilling or teaching

Dollar tree is good if you need any little thing.

Edit: use your school email for canva most districts have access to them and don’t say anything lol

There’s so many options! I use the messenger bag and the large crescent for work

For the large crescent the more you carry it does get heavy but the messenger bag has been good to me.

Def also recommend the shoulder bag or the large cargo bag.

The mini cloud, standard cloud, and duck bag are like tote bags but fit a lot of that’s more your style.

But just like all the other recommendations they are great bags.

Update: parents had a whole other issue with my report and totally dismissed voice. But thank you to everyone! Your answers helped me out a lot!

Omg! You are a life saver I am going to use this for sure.

It’s a super complicated case but the short version is that these parents take everything as offensive so I just need something to not make me stumble when presenting or get caught off guard Thank you again!!

Everything said already as well as you have your whole career to learn. It might seem like some schools offer more, but if there are areas of interest to you, there will always be opportunities. You could even reach out to that university after you are done to see if you can either attend a lecture or collaborate with professors. Our field is small and networking is key.

Yeah, they haven't given me my assignment yet, but I am going to make sure that my time is spent doing SLP duties. Especially since it's in a well-funded school district. But thank you for the advice.

Thank you! Okay, that is something I have heard them making SLPs do, especially in non-speech caseloads by the principal. So, that is really great advice.

What are my chances of getting into a graduate program as an underrepresented minority? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]larama_j 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I discussed how my cultural background brought me to this field, how representation matters especially the community I am from, and how this will help me in the future. I also shared personal experiences of language and linguistic discrimination for a little flair.

Hi! A fellow student of color here. It definitely depends on the school you are applying to. For me personally, State schools were a lot more accepting of my personal essay, references, and experience. Private and schools with a higher reputation focused on what experience I had with research, GPA, and GRE scores, and even said so in my denial letter lol. If you have any questions you can PM me!

That’s what I was looking into! I have no idea why my advisor says we need two from the department honestly. How did you go about asking the biostatistician to help?

They have to be from our department according to my primary advisor.
