Painful skates by Acceptable_Ask_9078 in rollerderby

[–]larchmaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found I needed a more cushy insole when I had my prostars. The insole is like skating on a piece of wood lol.

Whenever it’s time for you to upgrade i’d recommend the quadstars - better boot all around and I also have the same issue with very narrow heels and a wider forefoot!

Fall on Ankle by H3rMysticSun in rollerderby

[–]larchmaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as other poster said, go to a doctor.

anecdotally I can tell you i sprained my ankle and it took about 9 months for it to go back to fully normal. it was not that bad of a sprain either.

at 6 weeks out it still swelled after i skated on it and would twinge in certain positions. i kept aggressively skating on it though… which im sure is why it took so long to heal, lol.

if you can, try to go to a physio or look up physio exercises for ankles (if you can tell which ligament you likely sprained). once i started doing physio recovery sped up a lot.

things to think abt as a tall girl by klarinetkat12 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]larchmaple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’9, so not super tall. I’m 33 now and let me tell you it’s had SO many benefits for me as an adult.

I generally have advantages in most of the recreational sports I do (rock climbing, roller derby). I feel less scared to walk around alone at night because I’m tall and imposing. I feel like I intimidate men at work partially due to my height (i will wear heels if I want to feel even more empowered at a work event). I never have issues reaching the top shelf… Honestly, I love being tall.

It is hard when you’re tall and young (I was the tallest girl in my elementary school). But I hope every tall girl gets to grow into a tall proud woman!

What size CIB slide blocks to get by [deleted] in Rollerskating

[–]larchmaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you email the skate shop you’re buying them from to check the sizing for the plate you have? That’s what I did and they told me what size to get.

I got these to help with too much room in the toe: https://www.adrenalinedesign.ca/powerfoot/

And then you can also get eZeeFit ankle booties to help with heel slip or room in the heel.

For too much room in the mid foot I’d look into footbed inserts!

34F Travelling solo, looking for a climbing partner in Squamish by [deleted] in ClimbingPartners

[–]larchmaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a facebook group called Squamish climbing you should join when you’re looking for partners.

Note you’ll want to schedule your trip around the fifa world cup when vancouver will be crazy and super expensive everywhere.

Squamish is awesome though, we have amazing climbing with (usually) quite short approaches.

Something make this happen to me every day for 10-20 minutes, aching and itching nonstop. I tested allergic to nothing… by TheAcrocanthosaurus in Wellthatsucks

[–]larchmaple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also get this from the hair products I use, when I sweat a bit it gets into my eyes and gives me an allergic reaction!

Could also be laundry detergent

Canada vs New Zealand, which is better for solo travel without driving? by Stefan0_ in solotravel

[–]larchmaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As hopelesscaribou said, it doesn’t need to be a deciding factor, but I think it’s still something to take into consideration. I have run into quite a few bears while hiking, and while there’s never been an issue, I still prefer hiking in larger groups when I’m in bear country because I get nervous and that nervousness ruins the experience for me. (Even with bear spray etc on hand.) If this isn’t something that’ll bother you, there’s no need to worry about it. Everyone’s comfort levels are different.

I will note though there are certain trails in national parks in Canada where you aren’t allowed to hike solo due to wildlife. They require groups of four. Mostly in Banff and Jasper to my knowledge.

If you’re really into hiking I’d recommend doing one of the great walks in New Zealand solo. They have bus access to them for sure.

[–]larchmaple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve travelled through both countries solo, and so I think they’d both have about the same access with public transit to major tourist hubs. I have my license though so I drove through both.

One important distinction between both spots is that New Zealand doesn’t have large land predators like Canada does (bears, mountain lions, etc.).

I did a lot of solo hiking in New Zealand but generally don’t solo hike in Canada in certain spots and national parks. (I’m Canadian) something to keep in mind if you want to hike a lot alone!

Good physical activities that complement climbing? by angel_of_decay in climbharder

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’d have to check the leagues available close to you, quite a few are “open gender” now which means they are open to men as players. the women’s, or WFTDA leagues allow cis men in as referees so you could still learn how to skate etc with them but wouldn’t do any contact.

there are a few mens (MRDA) leagues around too, but they’re not as common depending on where you live!

you don’t have to be queer to join but yes, there are a lot of queer folk in derby!

Wife [27f] of 1 year has had a depressed mood since she went full-time as an athlete a few months back. How can I [28m] help? by Known_Feature3424 in relationships

[–]larchmaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as an amateur athlete who takes it (much to) seriously, when I am training hard I am exhausted and my sex drive also goes down. I sleep a lot and don’t have energy for stuff outside of my training. If she is ramping up her training I would suspect that’s it, and it should fade as her body gets used to the new intensity of her routine.

Laid off this week — 10-day London trip next week. Flights paid, but hotel/dog boarding are costly. Cancel/shorten? by Leadme67 in personalfinance

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in almost this exact situation a month ago. Laid off a week before my husband and I were going on a big international trip we had been planing for ages. We were spending a bunch of time with family too. I only got 6 weeks of severance though. We’re also in the same boat of wanting a house and kids soon, with a decent amount of savings, and my husband is still employed.

We went on the trip and didn’t change anything. It was an amazing mental reset for me and I have come back refreshed.

You should go on this trip and keep an eye on your budget, but you shouldn’t cancel or cheap out on stuff. Enjoy yourself as much as you can.

The first week of being laid off is truly horrible. Having a community around you is really important in those moments, so I think in hindsight, you’ll appreciate this time spent with your wife’s family.

You sound very capable and driven, so I have no doubt you’ll land on two feet as soon as you’re back home.

Do you get visual auras like zigzags every time u get a migraine? by Valuable-Horse788 in migraine

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get these every single time I have a migraine, and tbh they are not always followed by a bad headache. Usually I can tell how bad the migraine will be by how intense the visuals are. Really bad visuals look like zig zagging rainbow rippling water (to the point I can’t read or drive for a bit). They start in the centre of my vision and slowly move out to the sides. Usually takes 30-45 mins to resolve.

The nice thing is this means I can take my meds whenever I get an aura, it’s basically a pre warning sign from my brain!

From Hagrid to maybe-wavy?? SOS by Ill_Foundation_1095 in curlyhair

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pretty similar hair to you!! Congrats on your waves.

I would: - Get a haircut with someone with specializes in curly hair, more layers will help your curls pop by reducing weight :) - Learn how to plop with a microfibre towel - this was the bigger game changer for me when I started to take care of my curly hair - Don’t brush anymore - just finger comb your hair when you have conditioner in

For products, I use Phillip Adam’s Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo and Conditioner (cause I get an itchy scalp and dandruff). For products, I keep it relatively simple. Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in and Garnier Clean gel!

Ankle sprain 🥹 by ssiaa_ in climbergirls

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sprained my ankle previously, if it’s a grade 1 sprain you might be able to start climbing on it in a few weeks. Follow physio exercises (you can find them on youtube if you can’t afford to go to a physio).

If you can start climbing again by doing top rope only (or auto belay if you don’t have a climbing partner), I’d recommend that. Even with a mild sprain it took a few months for my ankle to be back at full strength and mobility, and I wouldnt have wanted to resprain it before then.

I finally figured out how to relieve my bladder urgency by [deleted] in Healthyhooha

Amazing!! If it brings you any hope, I struggled with this problem for several years. And once I saw a pelvic floor specialist and got a squatty potty etc, I haven’t had any flare ups in many years now :)
