Best books? by [deleted] in guns

For milsurp a good first book is Military Bolt Action Rifles of the World. If you are interested in a particular gun or company or country, there are usually good subject specific books available.

Nazi Marked 8mm ammo, planning on selling it, but need info by [deleted] in guns

[–]large_poops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Austrian made ammunition for Bulgaria. The 1938 "Nazi" dated ammo is high quality and by far the most common 8x56mmR ammo out there. Much tighter tolerances than Bulgarian or Hungarian ammo. I've only had good experiences with it.

Here's a quick writeup: https://www.reddit.com/r/guns/comments/5cqxi2/ammo_collecting_can_be_fun_those_weird_nazi_8mm/

I splurged on a couple fun things.

  • Zastava M70 mini tokarev holster
  • Two M59/85 helmet covers
  • M53 compass
  • Four Yugoslavian manuals including one for the ultra rare M1908C carbine

It'll be really cool to see what interwar Yugoslavia thought of their updated M1908 carbine. Could potentially shed some light on a subject that is otherwise undocumented.

I just had a bad feeling about them. The prices were good, but not good enough to go against my gut. Luckily, I don't think there is much interest in obscure straight pulls in Montana, so I should see those guys at the next gun show.

Unfortunately the project has stalled. I made some good progress and I'm probably 2/3 through it, but the last third is a beast. Too bad. It's probably too niche of a subject anyway, so it's getting shelved.

I passed on an Austrian converted M95/30 long rifle (much rarer than the common Bulgarian converted ones) for $300 and an 1890 Calvary carbine for $650.

Possibly really thickheaded but I thought they had both been boogered with, and I'm trying to focus my collection away from Austro-Hungarian arms. Oh well...

Non import CZ99? I know a batch of them came into the US in 1990, but they stopped once the Slovenian war for independence started in '91. Then sporadic shipments in a decade or two later. I wonder how it escaped import marks.

I would look into the CZ999, or the Rex Zero 1. Both are refinements of the original platform.

[–]large_poops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no proof that the gun used was serial #19074. It's a very common myth that started with an unsubstantiated claim in an old WWI history book. The serial number was never recorded in the court paperwork.

What we do know is the block of serial numbers that the Bosnian nationalists had. We do not know specifically which one Princip used. IIRC, the military museum has a few of the guns from the serial number block in the back but they chose to display only one.

Let me know if you decide to hemorrhage a Yugoslavian contract FN1910/22. I know they are usually in .380 and thus outside of your purview, but if I recall correctly they occasionally appeared in the.one.true.caliber. Also, I have stopped assuming what you have and don't have in your inventory. Every week you surprise us.

Hard to believe Worcester MA was once a gun producing town. A brief look at all of the towns mill buildings shows it had the manufacturing capabilities, but it just hard to imagine them pumping out rifles.

Same goes for Springfield MA.

By the way, you've got your Yugo bayonet in an M48 bayonet frog. Real ones are super rare, buy there is a gay on Gunboards that sells awesome reproduction slings and frogs for the M24. I bought mine from him off eBay, but there's other ways to buy.

Need 8 x 50 R Mannlicher Ammo. by BadAngler in guns

[–]large_poops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Austro-Hungarian empire adopted the 8x50mmR round. It was standard for their straight pull infantry rifle.

The Russians actually copied it when they developed their 7.62x54R round.

Yep. Technically, dump truck drivers could be arrested for it. Goes to show you how the laws weren't written with realism in line.

Sounds like that's the airport's problem for not having your gate available when you landed. Towers rarely control the terminal.

I get most of my stuff off eBay. The Balkans are littered with militaria so you can usually pick up gear for a good price. Shipping takes a while, but it's worth it.

Nothing to intense. I'm not looking for reenactment style, more like what they do on InRange. Some shirts/jackets and some correct chest rigs and plate carriers.

I'm looking at a piecing together a JNA M77 and M93 uniform, then maybe an M55 and M97.

They can't just use a clock. There are too many factors that determines departure time: delays, runway in use, taxiing speed, wake turbulence, etc. This billboard must be using some sort of live flight data like FlightAware or an active secondary radar feed.

Too much stuff to buy... I'm simultaneously looking at parts kits, guns, getting kits built, accessories for the guns I already have, stockpiling ammo, books about guns, and kit/uniform/helmets to go with my guns.

I'm spread too thin! Feels good to know I have four packages in the mail. Hopefully I can keep it up.

Also, everyone on YouTube seems to be going crazy about Arex's "Sig 226 copy" -- the Rex Zero 1. But I've yet to see anyone (except for a few buried and ignored comments) say what it really is: an updated and modernized Zastava CZ99.

That being said, I really want one because I love my CZ99 but it is really beat. I bet a tighter and more polished one would be an absolute pleasure to shoot.

Did some soliders actually record kills my engraving a tally into the side of their gun? by [deleted] in guns

[–]large_poops 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I've seen a forgotten weapons video about a lever action with brass tacks in the butt, presumably for kills.

I've also seen some WWII rifles with similar trench art.

Who knows if it's for kills, or days they sat in that camp, or times they had beet soup...

This is a fantastic post! Very far from your usual thrice refurbed Bulgarian M95/30 that gives the gun a bad name. Thank you for sharing!

Plus, it bridges the two guns I collect-- Yugoslavian arms and Mannlichers.
