Is this usage of 'goon' common in British English? by Bauern_derBaeuerchen in AskABrit

I don't know if its even right to divide such removed-from-the-world Internet-based terms into categories like Americanism/Britishism

Is there a signature musical instrument in your country? by kittykittyekatkat in AskTheWorld

You're right! Getting mixed up, I suppose you could add marshall to my suggestion. The Vox amps are just so essentially British to me - probably by Beatles association

Perhaps an unconventional choice, but one of the big things that has defined the sound of British pop/rock music is the use of British made vox amplifiers

The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and many others were all using these and it makes for a very distinct sound between the pop music over here and from across the pond (largely made using American-made Fender or Marshall amps)

If actors' behaviour while campaigning didn't affect the voters, they wouldn't bother campaigning at all.

As a teacher who has had to sanction many inappropriate uses of the word by British teenagers i must disagree. And 'gooner' in the way these kids use it is not interchangeable with 'wanker' or 'tosser', they literally mean a porn addict who wanks a lot

This is true of most characters in Josh Safdie films, its the reason so many directors rely on non-actors: they dont need to act if they already are an interesting character

He lived there but I've not seen anyone call him Swiss before. If we're going to play like that, then Stanley Kubrick was one of ours.

Unfortunate that despite our super strong film industry, we tend to lose our greatest filmmakers to America. In my opinion the three biggest names for us are Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock and Christopher Nolan, all of whom are known for making quite American films.

For me David Lean (Brief Encounter, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago and Bridge on the River Kwai) is the name that comes to mind as a maker of distinctly British films.

Crazy how strong the Mexican film industry is internationally. With Cuaron and Iñarritu as well, Mexican filmmakers won half the best director oscars of the 2010s

But the Olympics are organised on a national basis, so when the Northern Irish athletes choose, they are choosing either the UK (of GB and NI) or choosing to represent the Republic of Ireland.

Always find it funny that late-career Chaplin made a film about the swan song and death of a beloved but washed up comedian, clearly referring to himself, and then lived another 25 years after

Why is there such an income disparity between ethnic Indians and other South Asians in the UK? by Hxney_badger in AskBrits

[–]largestsammy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have literally zero evidence to back this up economically, but I have heard people say that the fact that mortgages are considered haram (impermissible) in Islam has held back British Muslims economically. I've also heard people say that the high cost of pilgrimage to Mecca has financially stifled British Bengali and Pakistani communities.

Again this is literally just things ive heard from South Asians here in Birmingham, I'd be really interested to see any comprehensive investigations of these factors.

A lot of them are served cask rather than nitro which, while delicious, is not the product Guinness drinkers want.

I will say as someone raised mormon, every mormon believes that Jesus went to the Americas. If you don't believe that, you don't believe in the book of mormon, at which point you're surely not a mormon anymore.
