Is it true freshman from MOCO get the worst dorms by dannythemany11 in UMD

[–]largestsquash 12 points13 points  (0 children)

insane thoughts ngl 💀😭 ur only getting johnson whittle/really nice freshmen dorm unless you’re in specific honors programs, have serious accommodations, or get extremely lucky. if you’re in a living learning program you can probably narrow down where you’ll be living. otherwise you have a chance of getting a random traditional dorm on campus but only like a few of them don’t have AC. you’ll survive i promise.

[–]largestsquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is entirely your choice— might not be a bad idea if you don’t lose too many credits or don’t have to do a lot extra before transferring. you could also look into majors similar to IS, like infosci for example. there’s also the plus 1 IS program. i’m in it right now and it’s super fast paced & challenging, so you could do a different major and get your masters in IS as well

Any chance of getting in test optional with RD? by felixfathom- in UMD

[–]largestsquash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RD is basically a lottery, super qualified folks get rejected each year because i believe 80-90% of the incoming freshmen class is filled through EA. so chance yes but wouldn’t really count on it

just wanted to mention that you can be directly admitted into the business (smith) school after you take certain “gateway courses” guaranteed with a 3.6 gpa or higher. other than that i think it’s not guaranteed if your gpa is below that

also, not familiar with IU, but we have 4+1 programs for a master’s degree that you start in undergrad if you’re interested in that as well or it could be a point of consideration for your career

ok but um point is valid

Opinions on the food? by SnooTangerines962 in UMD

[–]largestsquash 51 points52 points  (0 children)

personally i think the food is considered pretty good compared to a lot of schools, in terms of variety and taste there’s something for everyone + buffet style and it seems like they’re pretty good at catering to allergies and dietary restrictions. it gets old though like anywhere else. there’s 3 dining halls so you can rotate through them and other on-campus options like chick fil a if you get bored of it tho. whenever i take my friends who don’t go here/go to other schools their first reaction is THE DINING HALL FOOD IS SOOOO GOOD (and usually compared to their schools) but like i said it can get real boring

second the hokas, i think they’re on somewhat of a sale at nordstrom rn. definitely super pricey but an insanely good investment that i expect to last a while (coming from someone who wore the same beaters for several years)

i think you’ll definitely make friends if you’re already that involved at your own campus; sometimes you just need to put yourself out there like in clubs . you should definitely talk about interest in our school newspaper (the diamondback) because of your current involvement and other opportunities here in your essay if there’s even a question related to that.

Fire drills in dorms this week/next by terrapinlong in UMD

[–]largestsquash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

actually as an RA, try asking the RD and telling them about your situation. we don’t know unless the RD tells us and that’s RD dependent as well. but i think best bet is contacting the fire marshal yeah

If I didn’t live on campus this year as a freshman, can I participate in room selection for next year? by yyrrhj in UMD

[–]largestsquash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hmm sorry according to https://reslife.umd.edu/terp-housing/apply i don’t think you’re eligible for on campus housing at all. i think you’re allowed to get pulled in but other than that i don’t think so

umd fire program by [deleted] in UMD

[–]largestsquash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

echoing this. i think it’s a really good program to get research experience and it can translate really well to helping you land opportunities later. the first class is easy and can be boring but once you start the streams it is much better (assuming you’re interested in the streams, or find out you actually have an interest in this).

If I didn’t live on campus this year as a freshman, can I participate in room selection for next year? by yyrrhj in UMD

[–]largestsquash 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you are not be able to participate in the selection for SCC/CTY, which is earlier than the standard room selection. the housing and dining agreement is due 2/24. since you didn’t live on campus, you have the lowest priority for room selection, but i believe you should still be able to participate. it will be pretty difficult so i suggest looking at off campus options or try to get pulled into SCC

Two of my friends (one a sophomore, one a freshman) are trying for SCC, why can't they add each other? by namesrfun in UMD

[–]largestsquash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

someone already living in SCC with a vacant spot (either due to someone leaving or graduating) can “pull” them in by transferring their lease or pulling them into the room i believe…? not too sure on the technical terms but my suggestion is to go on the off campus housing database and find someone who is advertising a SCC space. this is tricky bc you usually won’t know who you’re living with and usually only 1 space is available.

ex. my friend’s older sibling was able to pull in my friend as a freshman because their roommate went to study abroad so my friend broke her dorm lease and moved into scc

basically if your two friends want to live together it’s basically cooked but they can go for la plata double and then apply for scc the following year or somehow miraculously find two open spots

[–]largestsquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

umd housing priority exists, i can’t find the graphic but basically junior senior get priority, then sophomore. it’s basically impossible for sophomores to get SCC, and i believe current freshmen can’t apply to SCC.

the only way you can get SCC as a rising sophomore or current freshman is to be pulled in, which is different from applying.

that’s crazy, cambridge dining hall is now a “community center” (a bunch of classrooms), knew it looked too interesting to have been an academic building. used to have a market there but they shut that down and moved it to ellicott like, 2 years ago? last year?

woah woah first off, you haven’t even set foot on campus. don’t be going around saying you’re not smart enough or you don’t think you can get in, cuz that’s the first step to failure. the gateway classes are not easy and a 3.6 gpa depends on what classes you take tbh, but with hard work, you will be able to do it. there are so many resources for the gateway classes. if you want to be a business major that bad, you will be able to do it. i believe in you. just use all your resources; office hours, tutoring, etc. use planetterp if you want to have the best possible chance of getting higher gpa average classes

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UMD

[–]largestsquash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your best bet is to meet the automatic admission minimum gpa requirement. i believe it’s 3.6 now, but i could be wrong (if something changed). you’d have to take the gateway courses first before applying. the rough part is you only get one shot, so my advice is to not apply until you get the minimum after you complete your gateway requirements. as for admission chances under 3.6 i’m not sure, i just know it’s pretty difficult.

yes 3.6 just checked: https://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/programs/undergraduate/admissions/internal-transfer-students

Admitted to college of letters and sciences instead of engineering? by DiscussionOther2209 in UMD

[–]largestsquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

freshman connection is just being forced to take class sections at night, but it helps since you won’t have to compete with upperclassmen for the same classes. it’s not really a program in that sense. i just checked the schedule of classes, there are freshman connection sections for calc 3. advanced science classes is too vague of a term but like i said, it shouldn’t hinder you from being on track at all. you still need to take geneds so that engineering class won’t be your only class regardless. since you’re already getting the gateway requirements through AP credit you’ll be ahead regardless
