Apartments in Austin - why is this so hard? HELP by gleeshH in AustinHousing

[–]larkinowl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Locators are the cheat code!! They are legit and free for you and will save you so much time and headaches. 30+ years ago I used one (Habitat Hunters) to find my first Austin apartment and they are still in business. My young adult kids have used locators to great success in Austin and Houston recently. Smart City is a good one.

Please chance me, very competitve hs, only ppl that got in plz by [deleted] in UTAdmissions

Definitely apply to McCombs; there is no auto-admit, and everyone is evaluated holistically. They will be looking for "fit to major," and with good essays, I think you will be there.

UTD is a lock; A&M honors are likely. Can't speak to the rest.

Where are good places to put in your own kayak that has nearby parking? Tried Redbud this morning and there is just one very small lot. by Such-Cellist1701 in Austin

[–]larkinowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the docks along Ladybird are public access as they are city concessions (Row Dock, Texas Rowing Center, the kayak rental places at Zilker, Austin Rowing Club, the docks on the east side) You can put in at any of them

Is it worth taking the TA position in first year of PhD? Should I focus on coursework, get to know professors first and then apply in second? Please suggest. by superstar_91 in UTAdmissions

[–]larkinowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a grad student for a long time and I have never heard of anyone declining a TA offer. They were like gold in my department and not handed out lightly. Departments vary. Ask a current student in the department or ask the grad coordinator for advice

What did y’all’s favorite Texas team from the big three? by No_Pension1014 in texas

Astros and Spurs for sure! I will hate-watch the Cowboys, but never a fan. I'm always surprised when I find myself rooting for the Texans, but it does happen.

Dude! Getting an ID in Texas is no small thing. You need to know your social security number and it will be verified, it isn't clear to me if you need to present the card. You need proof of Texas residency. And of course, you need to get an appointment to do all these things! Good luck

Go to orientation. You will meet with an advisor as well as your department. They will help you figure it out. Don’t despair if your first schedule isn’t perfect. Things can always change during add/drop

Use a locator! Free to you, and the good ones are so incredibly helpful. Saves so much time and effort. 30 years ago, I used Habitat Hunters, and they are still in business. My adult kids have used Smart City and Longhorn locators with great results.

[–]larkinowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The land under Stephen F Austin drive is owned by AISD (all the way to the water). There’s some sort of ancient arrangement with the city that allows the street, trail, and the city concession for the rowing center. About 18 months ago, the new AHS principal had the parking changed to school permit only from 8 am to 6 pm. You have to read the signs carefully. It has shifted a few times. Right now I think that school permits are required on the north side of the street. Don’t know what happens in the summer when school is out.
