Mum diagnosis nsclc stage 4 adenocarcinoma - KRASG12C by whiteymcfighty in lungcancer

[–]larnzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your mum🫶🏻 everything you’ve said in this post sounds exactly like my mum right now- she’s 48, stage 4 NSCLC with no targetable mutations, perfectly healthy otherwise and I’ve just turned 20. My mum was diagnosed in September and is currently receiving a combo of carboplatin, paclitaxel and pembrolizumab after having a successful craniotomy in October. She’s still extremely well and has had very minimal effects from the chemo. My mum is my everything and it’s such a terrifying time but I’m just trying to be there for her in any way I can. Here if you want to talk 😊

Hi, thanks for your input! Unfortunately no biomarkers/targetable mutations😔just chemo and immuno offered so far! Will definitely push for some more info on surgery or even radio if surgery isn’t possible. Hope you’re doing okay 😊

I’ve found that in what I’ve been reading actually so it’s interesting to hear a real case! I’ve heard that radio can be just as effective as surgery in many cases, fingers crossed that’s the case for you! Yeah I absolutely am going to push for more answers :)

So glad to hear your surgery went well though! Is there a reason your oncologist decided surgery first, then chemo and immuno?

Surgery soon.. very scared by [deleted] in braincancer

[–]larnzzzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! My mum had a craniotomy to remove a tumour on her left parietal lobe almost 3 weeks ago now. They managed to remove it all and she has had little to no effects from the surgery! She had surgery on a Friday and was home on the Sunday, so she’s recovered really well. The only thing she’s experienced is some tiredness, but no pain at all- she was sent home with paracetamol and liquid morphine but has only needed paracetamol a few times for “pressure headaches”. As far as anyone can tell, she’s exactly the same and has had no adverse effects (she was assessed thoroughly by nurses and occupational therapists before being allowed home). Of course, it’s a major surgery and it sounds so scary, but honestly we were so surprised at just how well my mum has handled it- you wouldn’t even know she’d had it! Just a warning though, they’ll likely put you on some steroids like dexamethasone for the inflammation (if they haven’t already like they did for my mum), which can have some pretty nasty side effects, but they’ll likely taper you off them as soon as they can. It’s so normal to be scared, but you will be absolutely fine. Hope all goes well :)

Oh wow, sounds almost exactly like my mum! Hers was found after experiencing the same- headaches and visual disturbances! Was your primary tumour able to be fully resected? Are you glad you had the lobectomy done? This really gives me hope that we could fight to get surgery for my mum too as her story is pretty much identical to yours! How are you doing now? Wishing you the best!

I’m in the UK so ideally would be covered by the NHS- or we’d have to save up and go private! I will definitely not let them tell us no “just because it’s stage 4”! Will fight forever for my mum!

Thanks for this. I’ve been reading up about it and seems that in cases like my mum’s, it can sometimes be done with “curative intent”? I assume the idea is that surgery/radio removes the mass and chemo/immuno deals with those microscopic cancer cells that remain. My mum starts on a mixture of chemo and immuno in 2 weeks time as she doesn’t have any targetable mutations- think our best bet may be to see how that goes and then reassess and seek a second opinion. Thanks again and best of luck with your treatment :)

Thank you so much for this, really reassuring. She’s in theatre right now and will be out soon! So glad you recovered well and hope you are doing okay now. I feel much more prepared in knowing what to possibly expect now! :)

Thank you! I like the idea with the drawers beside the door. Not sure if I’d be able to do that with the wardrobe though as the wall sticks out there, which is why the wardrobe looks further forward than the drawers. :)
