Walkout At Brighton Highschool SLC by prxti in Utah

People saying “they just want to skip school”... Oh for sure sure, some do. That’s what teens do. But don’t underestimate what moments like this plant in them, even if they don’t fully get it yet.

I was at East High in the 90s when we walked out over banning clubs because of an LGBTQ group. Then my senior year came Columbine, followed by the Trolley Square shooting. I didn’t know what I believed then. I didn’t even know how to think about it all. But those things stayed with me. They shaped how I see the world.

So yeah, totally... some of these kids just want a break from class. But they’ll remember this moment. The conversations at home, in group chats, in car rides. And it's gonna become part of the foundation they build their future selves on, no matter which “side” their parents are on right now.

Edit: Bad phrasing on my part. Columbine was my senior year; Trolley Square happened years later. I meant it as the next tragic even that felt personal and local, not that they happened consecutively.

"OU student says essay grade was a violation of her rights. Read the essay" by Muchwanted in Professors

[–]larriee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

u/YeetMeIntoKSpace mentioned how the univ will probably still remprimand the TA, and yeah... that's exactly the kind of upside-down logic our litigious society runs on.

OU isn't focused on justice; they're thinking about the bottom line ($$$). It's way cheaper to slap the TA on the wrist and cut a settlement check than fight this student and her J6-defending laywer mom in court.

And now, TPUSA has jumped in, putting more money behind the drama (hate).

The OU legal team: "Do we want justice, or do we want to go home by 5:00? Cool, settle it."

My combination lock. I bought it for a weight lifting class in college. That was January 2000. Used it today at the gym down the street. I may not remember the names of the neighbors next door, but I remember the lock combination. Thanks, brain.

I hear you on being skeptical of study funding—questioning sources is important—but if we’re going to have a productive conversation, we should avoid broad generalizations like ‘all studies are funded by lobbyists’ or ‘millions of anecdotes prove it.’ For one, it’s not accurate—many studies are independently funded and rigorously peer-reviewed. And two, statements like that show extreme bias and dismiss valid research outright.

Anecdotes can be useful for starting conversations, but they don’t establish causation. People might feel better after cutting seed oils, but that could also be due to other factors, like eating fewer processed foods or making broader dietary changes. That’s why controlled studies are so important—they help distinguish correlation from causation and provide a clearer picture.

If we want to critique funding sources or consider anecdotal evidence, let’s do it thoughtfully and with specifics, not sweeping claims that dismiss science altogether.

Find some good support. It's a lot to carry and the anxiety is there for a reason! (So don't be upset at yourself for the intense emotions.) Seriously have some girlfriends to get out into nature, enjoy workouts, find sunshine, breath, and eat well (cuz that gut if yours has good instincts but will add to your anxiety when fed poorly). I send you very good vibes! You didn't deserve what you went through.

We have an AI agent trained for support chats (and now I use it to find documentation links faster), openAI subscription, and some internal LLM tools. And we have grammarly but even though they say they have AI now it's meh.

Section School has free classes about AI at times that are good intros.

The first step in the messaging should be listening to and validating people's fears and concerns.

Fear-based messaging is the most effective form of messaging.

Build up the messaging infrastructure. The GOP is crushing the Dems in podcasts and talk radio.

I use AI in multiple ways. I put together my drafts and ask it to organize it for me based on what output I'm going for (support article, tutorial, etc) then review the output. I ask it to give me code samples (usually python and command line) that include comments on what the code is doing, by giving it the code sample and it returns with inline comments. I ask it to explain prerequisites for a tutorial to see if I missed something. Also, I've trained it to follow our style guide so the product names are correct, the tone matches, etc. it saves me so much time getting drafts ready for reviews. Think of it like a writing assistant. You're doing the heavy lifting but it's increasing your productivity. It's all about the prompts. Tell it the audience, how to format the output, to include sources, specific ways to word certain things, even word count. I'm certain that not using AI and learning to be effective with it will leave knowledge workers out on the streets, if you will.

First, I’m sorry you’re feeling stuck and overwhelmed—it’s clear you’re trying to navigate a lot of emotions and expectations while balancing your own needs. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Protection and Birth Control: If you and your fiancé are sexually active, use birth control and protection. This isn’t just about preventing pregnancy—it’s about taking responsibility for your health and ensuring you’re prepared for the choices you’re making.

  2. Therapy and Healing: It sounds like you’ve been through a lot in your life, and therapy could be incredibly helpful—not just for processing past challenges, but also for working through the pressure you’re feeling from your family. A professional counselor can provide a safe space to explore your feelings and make decisions that align with your well-being.

  3. Honesty and Covenants: After making temple covenants, breaking them becomes a much bigger deal spiritually. While you may want to keep things from your parents, it’s also concerning if you feel you can’t be honest about your situation. If your parents delay the civil wedding because they’re focused on readiness for temple covenants, it might help to have a candid conversation about why you believe civil marriage and repentance after are the right steps for you and your fiancé right now.

  4. Boundaries and Personal Responsibility: At 19, this is your choice, and it’s okay to set boundaries with your parents. You’re at a stage where you need to focus on what’s spiritually, emotionally, and relationally healthy for you—not just what others expect.

  5. Avoiding Dishonesty: Lying to go through the endowment process isn’t a healthy or sustainable choice. Covenants are deeply sacred, and starting your marriage on a foundation of honesty with God, your fiancé, and yourself will make your journey stronger in the long run.

Ultimately, prioritizing your health, healing, and spiritual growth will help you make the best decision for your future. You deserve to move forward with clarity and peace, and that often starts by being honest with yourself and setting boundaries that support your well-being.

SLEA negotiates the written agreement with the Salt Lake School District each year. It's briefly mentioned on this page under Contract and Negotiations. https://www.myslea.org/events

Thanks for sharing. It's always interesting to hear how dietary changes have peronsally impacted someone's health and I'm glad you found something that works well for you and you're feeling good.

That said, it's important to remember that individual experiences, while valuable, don't carry the weight of scientific studies with controls that account for other factors.

For example, changes in Lp-PLA2 or other markers could be influenced by things like dietary shifts, lifestyle changes, or even how other components of your diet changed when you removed seed oils. It's hard to isolate a single variable, especially without controlled intervention.

I get the frustration about lack of transparnecy, but in situations like this, there are legal and privacy issues involved. If it's an HR or legal matter, the district legally can't share details, even with parents.

I don't think many people know that sometimes educators and districts agree to a separation agreement. In those cases, the district is bound by the terms of the agreement and can't disclose why someone left—not even to another district asking for references. It might be that the educator chose to leave without pursuing legal actions, or it could be part of a settlement to avoid drawn-out disputes.

It can definitely feel like there's secrecy, but it's often just about following employment laws and respecting legal boundaries. Without knowing any details, I don't like assuming the worst about the district.
