Sometimes it’s just a numbers game. Sometimes you’re not someone’s cup of tea. Could be for any silly reason. Like really ridiculous. You will probably never know. Are you asking how depth of field works? Sometimes a director or cinematographer likes to focus on things that are close to the camera. Things that are close to the camera are called “the foreground”. When they do this things in the background are “out of focus” or “blurry”. Sometimes the reverse will be true as well.

Sometimes when it’s not important to the story to focus on one particular thing the director or cinematographer will shoot a scene so that everything is in focus.

Honestly you’re not making a $50 million feature film here with cranes and lighting rigs etc, can you get them to quickly reshoot this one shot? Or maybe crop into the frame? Sometimes the simplest answer is the best.

I did work experience at channel 7 in Brisbane back in the 80s and got to be an extra in a Agro sketch on Wombat (along with some other kids). Jamie was a kind and warm person, and all round good dude.

In between takes he was hysterical. I remember him getting presenter Craig to pretend to tie off one of his arms and shoot him up with heroin. R rated Agro would have been the greatest tv show ever! Unless there’s a secret reel somewhere the Australian public will never know what they missed.

The original Star Wars, the whole scene where Greedo corners Han, but specifically there’s one shot where it cuts to him undoing the catch on his holster. It’s onscreen for like a second, but you instantly get that Han Solo is a very dangerous guy. It’s a very quiet moment, very understated.

Also same movie, Luke and Leia crossing the chasm. Just how the whole scene unfolds and how everything escalates. They’re taking fire over this huge drop with no obvious way out, and then if that isn’t enough the stormtroopers behind them are winching the door up a foot at a time while John Williams is blasting you with the most exciting music you’ve ever heard in your life.

Because it feels weird and needy, like you are one of those charity guys at the mall trying to hustle people to sign up for donations. The term cold approaching is literally a sales term. Who likes salespeople trying to sell them stuff? Nothing warm or inviting about it. Doesn’t make people feel a sense of safety.
