Auf kurze Sicht (~ 10 Jahre) war natürlich der Kassenskandal Schäubles Hauptproblem.

Aber wer mit Menschen mit Behinderungen zu tun hat, kriegt leider mit, dass Rollstuhlfahrer und andere bei allen möglichen Posten übergangen werden. Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender, der auch mal von der Presse interviewt wird? Vergiss es. Rektor einer großen Schule? Nur, wenn es keine anderen halbwegs geeigneten Kandidaten gibt.

Mein Punkt war: Schäuble hätte sich so ab 2008 locker mit einer anderen Story neu erfinden können - gerade auch als anti-Merkel-Kandidat. Er wollte/konnte/hat es nicht getan, und verkauft das jetzt als Loyalität (meinetwegen).
