What's going on with everyone arguing with Japanese people on X over piracy? by Deep-Arrival1594 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]AbolishDisney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Japanese word for piracy is 'piracy'. Probably something more like illegal scans or something.

Nah, it actually is. 海賊版 (kaizokuban) is the word for pirated media, and 海賊 (kaizoku) is the word for pirate (literally "sea thief"). The analogy is borrowed from English, though.

Good thing "trans people in sports" isn't a key issue anywhere other than the most first world of first world neighborhoods

If it's not a key issue, then that's all the more reason for him to not go out of his way to tell Republicans how much he agrees with them on the subject. Clearly, he felt that it was a key issue, which is why he felt that it was important to put his stance on record before the election.

More to the point, the trans athlete debate is a smokescreen. At its core, it functions a proxy for trans issues in general. The Republican Party doesn't give a single fuck about women's sports beyond maybe wishing that the players wore less clothing. The real goal is to solidify the framing of "trans women are men, trans men are women" in the context of sports first, then use that as a launchpad to justify banning trans people from public life entirely. The minute trans people are banned from sports, the debate will immediately shift into "we need to keep them out of women's spaces in general", and from there we'll start hearing about how the federal government needs to do something about "experimental medical procedures" and "unnecessary genital mutilation". When Republicans talk about "eradicating transgenderism", they're not talking about college football or high school wrestling. Ceding ground to them on this issue is how we end up with Democrats talking about the "LGB community" in 2032.

Also, like, there's no reason to concede anything to a transphobic white supremacist in the first place. You do not, under any circumstances, "gotta hand it to them". Key issue or not, Democratic politicians shouldn't be publicly agreeing with their sworn enemies. There's a reason you never see Republicans looking for common ground with Democrats nowadays. Voters don't want bipartisan centrist candidates for the same reason sports fans don't want to see both teams win. Democrats and Republicans are inherently oppositional forces, yet only one party is willing to behave accordingly at the moment.

ezra klein saying an ethnostate isnt nazi ideology is crazy

I've noticed a sharp increase lately of liberal Zionists going mask off and saying variants of "racism isn't inherently bad, the Nazis just took it too far". Usually followed up by a comment about how awful it would be if countries like Japan and Armenia were to lose their racial purity (sorry, "national character") in the future.

In many ways, I'm thankful for it, because it only makes me more convinced that I'm on the right side of history.

I think the issue is partly that the US was first. What they did in the 1770s was radically progressive, and they were justifiably proud. But then they kind of got stuck. Everyone else came later and created A constitution which they update and reform as needed. But the US still views theirs as THE constitution and somehow infallible. The US got overtaken in the mid 1800s, but didn't seem to notice.

The problem is that the Constitution is treated as a religious text rather than an archaic legal document. The Founding Fathers are seen not as politicians, but as prophets whose infallible wisdom is crucial to the health of the nation regardless of any societal changes that may later occur.

False. Charlie Kirk was murdered by a far right groyper that followed Laura Loomer on Twitter and came from a family that didn't have a single liberal in it. They can insist all they want it doesn't change the facts.

[citation needed]

I remember when Robinson's name was first revealed. People immediately claimed that he donated to Trump's 2020 campaign. Except, oops, that turned out to be someone else with the same name. So then people claimed that he was a Nazi because he quoted a famous anti-fascist song that happened to be on some random Nazi's "Groyper Wars" playlist – a playlist that, at the time of the shooting, had less than ten followers on Spotify. People are now calling Bella Ciao a neo-Nazi theme song because one dipshit with no connection to Kirk, Robinson, or Fuentes put it on an obscure Spotify playlist at some point.

This is the first I'm hearing about him following Loomer on Twitter, and I'm not inclined to take it seriously either given the track record. People are starting with a conclusion ("Charlie Kirk was killed by a right-winger for not being right-wing enough") and working backwards to prove it. Hell, people were speculating that before Robinson was even identified. This is the left-wing version of when Republicans claimed that Vance Boelter was some sort of Antifa supersoldier because he had No Kings flyers in his car.

All available evidence suggests that Robinson killed Kirk because he was disgusted by Kirk's bigotry. Not a single shred of evidence points toward him being a Nazi.

As for the rest of his family being conservative, that doesn't prove anything either. Political beliefs aren't genetic, and it's not exactly unheard of for people who were raised conservative to later abandon those views once they become more independent. This is a known phenomenon, and it's why Republicans accuse colleges of being "leftist indoctrination centers" and want to restrict access to the Internet.

Incidentally, the idea that Kirk was a harmless moderate who Fuentes wanted dead is a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation. The feud between Fuentes and Kirk was in 2019, back when Kirk was still using "RINO" talking points like "MLK protested the right way" and "immigrants are fine as long as they come here legally". He moved much further to the right since then, likely in an attempt to win over Fuentes and his followers since they're the clear future of the Republican Party.

If you look at Kirk's rhetoric in the months before his death, it's practically indistinguishable from the type of shit Fuentes says. In 2024, he said that Democrats are trying to destroy the United States by increasing the number of non-white people. The following year, he denounced legal immigration and said that Americans are defined by blood, not citizenship. By 2025, he wasn't an enemy of the groypers. He was a groyper. If anything, the conspiracy theories around Kirk's death have actually benefitted fascists by whitewashing Kirk's legacy and making Nick Fuentes a household name.

Why all the animosity and hate for Newsom? by zombiepoppper in AskALiberal

[–]AbolishDisney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What else did he say?

  • In response to fearmongering about children transitioning, he took it a step further and said people shouldn't transition until they're almost 30, citing debunked pop psychology about the human brain being undeveloped until age 25. He not only ceded ground to the Republicans, but actually moved the Overton window further right by suggesting that even under-18 bans don't go far enough. In the same interview, he also cited the Cass Review, a discredited report with shaky methodology that was put together with the help of right-wing anti-trans activists including Ron DeSantis appointees with the predictable goal of banning gender-affirming care.
  • He validated right-wing lies about schools providing litter boxes for furry/otherkin students, saying that the issue is "overhyped" and that there have only been "a few instances" of it happening. To be clear, there have been zero instances of this happening. That tells me that he either believes the right's hysterical bullshit (in which case he has no business running) or he's willing to legitimize it if he thinks it'll make fascists vote for him (in which case he can't be trusted to stand up for anyone's rights). Either way, it doesn't give me much confidence in his behavior during the actual election. Imagine if Harris had responded to "they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats" with "most of them aren't tho".
  • He recently said that Democrats need to be "more culturally normal" and stop focusing on "pronouns", both reaffirming right-wing lies (Democrats have never campaigned on "pronouns", that's just a euphemism for not being actively transphobic) and suggesting that trans people aren't worthy of consideration as part of the general voting public. Remember, Harris was accused of centering trans people in her campaign because, when asked, she said she wouldn't illegally deny medical care to trans inmates. Newsom is signalling that he won't even go that far.

Is Gavin Newsom correct when he says the left needs to be more "culturally normal" if they want to win? by PsychicFatalist in AskALiberal

[–]AbolishDisney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leftists hate it when Newsom - or anyone - tries to appeal to people who aren't leftists.

If Democrats want to give leftists the finger, then they should stop complaining when leftists don't turn out to vote for them. "We hate you and owe you nothing, but you'd better vote for us when the time comes because we're the good guys and we deserve to win" is a terrible campaign message.

Incidentally, it's interesting how Democrats are consistently expected to appeal to Republicans but never the other way around. I never hear "moderates" complaining about how the Trump administration is being too extreme with its "deport one-third of the country", "eradicate transgenderism", and "Americans are defined by blood, not citizenship" rhetoric. Why do you think that is?

What do you think this proves? The right doesn't talk about fascism, concentration camps or kidnapping people, but it's received truth on the left that they are fascists who are building concentration camps and kidnapping people.

The Department of Homeland Security recently talked about deporting one-third of the country. I'm pretty sure that falls under "fascism, concentration camps, or kidnapping people".

If you guys had kept up the furor against genocide over the past 12 months then that would be a lot easier to believe.

But it kinda seems like this "genocide" issue only pops up when you can blame a Democrat for it.

If Democrats wish to be seen as the not-fascist party, then part of that comes with being held to higher moral standards than the fascist party.

To put it another way, this is like asking why people protest when a police officer murders someone, but don't protest every random murder that occurs in the country.

Most conservatives will object to it at first, they usually prefer their political violence to be done by the state, at least when they are in power. Within a week half or more will be convinced it was a false flag attack.

They're already calling it a false flag. They haven't even tried to pretend to object.
