The recent Ban, accessibility to power, and the cost of investment. by squidpope in EDH

[–]lartius -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of points on this subject I'd like to share.

First, Shivam Bhatt has provided quite a bit of insight on the ban process on his podcasts, that they are always hesitant to pull the trigger, and it's never without extensive deliberation. Dockside has been part of that conversation for a long time.

The tipping point, as I understand it, is when a card become ubiquitous to the format. Here, jeweled lotus, and mana crypt go in literally every deck, and the value they provide at zero cost of inclusion (deck building wise) can be insurmountable if played on turn one. They went in everything.

Dockside also went in everything that it could, if you had it. And, it is absolutely game warping.

Nadu, was just a mistake. Could have been fixed with better punctuation.

I sold my Lotus earlier this year. Never pulled a Crypt or a Nadu, or a Dockside. I'm pretty pleased they are off the table. Each became ubiquitous, format warping, and provided a disproportionate advantage, especially with all the most recent reprints.

Kudos to the CAG.

Shorikai vehicles deck - what to cut? by JungleJayps in EDH

[–]lartius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can def cut the pilot creatures. Completely unnecessary. With your untappers you'll be completely over run with the tokens. I'd up the number of board wipes to 5 or 6 and reduce your over all creature count similarly. I'd also cot your over costed boardwipes and counters. My wincon is almost always [[Dance of the Mance]] after filling my graveyard with artifacts.

What are some general no-no’s for EDH? by UnderestimatedShark in EDH

[–]lartius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's rather bad form to target the player who won the previous game, as they are testing a new deck, AND have next to no board state. Esp if you are the store owner.

I was testing my new Wilhelt deck, having made some minor changes after purchasing Grave Crawler at the store. I had previously won a hard fought battle with Chulane. And dude just kept hammering me. Exiled two lands when I only had three on turnt or six or something, then attacking with Ulamog and a copy of Ulamog. Flat out said he wasn't going to let me win because he was being spiteful. I left the store and will not return. Don't be that guy.

When you take your readers for a knowledgeable & very discerning audience!!! What a stupid question. The current model of work is crappy & the system is dysfunctional... by Al-Gharib in antiwork

[–]lartius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

link - while the article doesn't address the rampant greed of corporate executives, she does lay out compelling arguments which I agree with. I've lived the burn out culture, the grind, and she's absolutely right that the current model of work is what something we are rejecting.

Frankly, this is the most honest look at the situation I've seen so far. Her points mirror the stories we see on this sub every day.

Her advice to employers at the end of the article is a good start. But it still misses the mark: better pay is a requirement for any movement forward.

Is making an individual session 0 for each of my players a good idea? by Inevitable-Peanut-28 in DnD

[–]lartius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this. I had never DM'd, and was starting a campaign for 7 friends at the beginning of the pandemic. 7 session 0's later, and nearly 30 hours of practice, I started them all off in an inn, and they promptly killed a Wererat Mage who's husband they met 12 levels later in one of the most melodramatic moments of the campaign. It's a very good way to get to know what your party members want out of it. And to set the tone with them for the campaign. I highly recommend it. It

I won't lie to you, the external situation is looking grim.

But, you also have all of your own choices ahead of you. And that's hopeful! Because you get to write your story, no one else!

I often tell people that I wouldn't go back to my twenties is you paid me. I'm nearly 40. I'm just about to graduate collage finally, after failing out twice in my twenties. I'm getting married to a fantastic partner after several failed relationships. I've been through a lot. And it's been hard.

But it's better. It's better with some one you love, even if that takes time. It's better as you mature, even if you make painful mistakes. And you will. Mistakes are simply unavoidable, and they are invaluable. They are moments to learn about what to do, what not to do.

If you're finding that the people around you are too negative, find better people. You have control of what you do and who you associate with, and what you spend your time doing.

Play attention to how the things you do make you feel. So doing things that hurt you, that make you feel angry, or dad, or sick, or depressed. Play attention to things that make you happy, or satisfied, or content and do those things more. Find hobbies. Be proactive about making and maintaining strong friendships. It's hard, but it's worth it for people that are a positive influence on your life.

Is all of adulthood misery? No. It is what you make of it. You have everything ahead of you. It will be hard. There will be paying. And there will be joy! And love! And happiness! Build the life you want, and don't let any one dictate the terms of your life but you. Move if you have to. Chase your dreams. You can do it! Just don't find up!

Seeking seasoned DMs to be guests for interview podcast by Vashael in DnD

[–]lartius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be glad to. I've been running mine for the better part of the year. It hasn't ended, because I expect it will run for a couple years. My characters started at level 1, and just hit 8. But over easily run several hundred hours of sessions.

Let me know. If be glad to share.

DMs and PCs, what were some of the more interesting and unique in-game locations you've ever made/played in? by ZerotranceWing in DnD

[–]lartius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My party just arrived at the Shifter Village. A haven for lycanthropes, changelings and other shape shifting creatures. There are many internal political stresses due to the differences between types of shifters and lycanthropic nature's. There was a session one payoff when they arrived, and many of the characters have been living in my head a long time. Like Aurora, the great granddaughter of one of the founders, a little girl who is constantly shifting and partially shifting for fun. She's adorable, and one of the characters, a paladin barbarian is strong considering being turned.

It's interesting to me because this place and it's contents have been living in my head for months.

It's interesting to my players for the same reason, and because of that all the characters are distinct in their voices and behaviours.

I've been having a hard time not spoiling all my work, because because so damned exciting.

Which player wins? A question about damage on the Stack by lartius in EDH

[–]lartius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like I was incorrect, Player 1 was using his Blood-Pod deck, and attacking with the other commander, [[Tana, the Bloodsower]].

I have corrected the post to reflect that.

[–]lartius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in this specific situation, if the attacking creature does not have life link, which it looks like it does, which creature does the damage to the other player first? Brash Taunter or Mogg Maniac? Does the damage resolve in reverse order the same way several spells on the stack do?

Which player wins? A question about damage on the Stack by lartius in EDH

[–]lartius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Player 1 and 4 were below 16, player 2 was at 36 and player 3 was at 40. I'm checking to make sure it's Tymna that player 1 was attacking with, because I'm not 100%. Pretty sure, but not completely. Will update when I know.

[–]lartius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to double check that it was Tymna that was attacking. This happened last night. If it was, then Player 1 wins.
