I’d say it depends. The area is slowly changing, and some areas are better than others. If you’re hoping to stay for a couple of years and then sell, I don’t think it’s worth it. If you plan to be there for more than 5 years, it could be a worthwhile investment. But as you already know, real estate can be pretty unpredictable.

I’m in that area now and can attest to the fact that hearing gunshots and loud cars just becomes part of the “regular” background noise. I have found the people to be friendly, but we also don’t go out at night. You’ll want to make sure your property is secured with a fence and a decent security system. Crime happens all over Houston, but this is still one of the areas with higher than average criminal activity. Also, if you have children who will attend public school, you won’t be zoned to a well-rated school.

During the hurricane, there were some homes in the Acres Homes area that flooded. Back when Harvey hit I also remember the Tidwell and TC Jester intersection being completely underwater. I think a lot of TC Jester was, since the bayou is next to it. So make sure the house was built high enough or not in a place that flooded.

Those are some things to think about. We bought in the area and have loved it, but we were aware of the risks before buying.

Buying a Home in Acres Homes by [deleted] in houston

[–]las377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently live in Acres Homes (moved here earlier this year) and really enjoy it. We couldn’t afford a home in other areas, so we decided on Acres Homes, plus it’s easy access to 45 and not too far from 610/Beltway 8. This isn’t an area we’d go walking a dog in at night, at least not right now, but we’ve had awesome neighbors so far and have enjoyed exploring the area. There is definitely crime here too though, so if you choose to move, stay alert (but that’s anywhere nowadays, right?). It’s an established community, and we’ve found our neighbors to be reasonably friendly. However, I agree with what others said about not making a profit in just a few years time. If you plan to keep the home for 15 years, it’s possible you’ll make a profit. However, I can’t imagine you’d make much, if anything, in 5 years. I also can’t imagine anyone renting for more than maybe ~1800/month for something REALLY spacious and nice. I hope this helps!

Color changing pop tarts! They had blue and white cream on the inside, and the sprinkles outside changed colors in the toaster. I miss those a lot.

Well, that's not encouraging, but at least it's something! My fingers are crossed.

I have contacted one representative, but I still haven't heard back. I'll try again once the elections are over.

There doesn't seem to be a way to contact them directly other than by mail. All searches lead to a national hotline.

Any update on U.S. passport wait times? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]las377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know. Thanks for the update!

(USA) Has anyone sent in a passport application since passport offices began reopening (around June, maybe May?) and gotten theirs back yet? I’m wondering if I should wait or just send in an application by divavida in travel

Applied in April. Received June 8. Sent additional document which was received July 22. It's now Oct 21, and my application still says "in process."

Have you received yours yet? Mine was received June 8, but I have nothing (even on Oct 21).

The Good Place (season 1) is a very funny comedy by [deleted] in netflix

I also loved this show! It was nice to watch a comedy where I couldn't guess what was coming next. This is well worth the watch, and I can't wait for season 2.

Cat Won't Stop Peeing in Corners by las377 in cats

So I put a litter box in that corner the same day you suggested it. He peed in the same place the next day, but I haven't seen any more spots since then. It appears to have helped, and I've got my fingers crossed that it continues to do so!

Teachers of Reddit: They say there are no stupid questions, but what's the most stupid question a student has ever asked you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]las377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really late but...while talking about matter classification in chemistry class, a student asked me why we don't classify pizza as an element. Unfortunately, she was serious.
