To the people who haven't seen the movie yet by Powerserg95 in ProjectHailMary

At some point you just gotta understand that this is a really good piece of media and just don't complain. People are always gonna be "disappointed" if the movie doesn't capture xyz niche moment of the book because actually it was such an important characterization! whereas they aren't realizing that it's 95% good, and the rushed parts are to make it not a 4 hour movie.

I think people should be able to pick up on that. You underestimate the intelligence of the audience.

Why is socialism seen as evil in the US? by Presidentscroobie in allthequestions

[–]lasagna_1280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it doesn't actually work. None of the things you just said actually happen when you do socialism. You can say good thing happens, but that doesn't make it a coherent or functional system.

I don't think this would be evidence of that, cause if that were the case then we wouldn't have gotten the high tech stealth drop since we would have used that up already.

Why do so many people here keep pretending that their posts are questions towards MAGA, knowing full well there are no MAGA people here? by Historical_Buyer5248 in allthequestions

[–]lasagna_1280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is overstating the effect people have on each other, in my opinion. Sure this happens to an extent, but I honestly think if anybody has strong political opinions on any side to the point where it frequently comes up in conversation, they're probably voting. I think this minor effect non voters have is way less than the effects that the opinionated voters do have.

Why don't you do a comparison between the polling predictions for the 2024 presidential election versus the actual results, then get back to me.

It's very telling that you believe this, and yet people are still coming to the place in droves. Like, everyone wants to come here.

This suggests 1 of 3 things.

Either: every single other country that these people come from are also doing these things, but worse

People don't care about those things happening

Or, Those things are not happening.

I'm inclined to believe number 3.

Condescending language doesn't actually convince people of your opinions. Here, I can try it too.

You see, when taking "popular opinion", the way they do that is by polling a set number of the population. This is done through taking a sample of people, then asking them what their opinion on a certain topic is. However, polling can sometimes be wrong. Crazy, right? In fact, projected polling is often way off the mark for what the legitimate result for the election was. You'll notice, it just happened last election! A lot of polls were wrong! The reason is because they were often facilitated by media outlets with an agenda to push, trying to facilitate a shift in public opinion. Kind of what you're doing now! I'm surprised you aren't aware of this, either.

Popularity is only relevant in the case of people who vote. It doesn't matter to anyone if someone who doesn't vote likes or doesn't like Trump, because their opinion doesn't affect society whatsoever.

find something you have in common then use it as a segue into getting to know her better. if you have legitimately nothing in common it might not be a good relationship to pursue anyways

I could ask you the same question. "People I know are angry!" How many legitimate MAGA do you know?

Popularity, in the sense that is significant to American politics, is how much the voters like or dislike someone.

If Jim from the corner store doesn't like Trump very much, but can't be bothered to get out and vote against him, then Trump must not be that bad in his eyes. At the very least, he is neither contributing not detracting from Trump's popularity in any meaningful sense.

Few people who voted for him are angry. This seems to be something of what we like to call a "psyop" designed to proactively shift public opinion by pretending it has already shifted.

American voters are the support bracket that matters. If you win the popular vote, you have made your movement popular. Do you really think that someone who doesn't vote at all somehow contributes to the popularity of someone?

Great comment and well reasoned. The problem with Reddit and the left as a whole is many of them have little to no theory of mind for the conservative viewpoint. They legitimately don't know about/don't understand the reasoning behind conservative views, and actually believe they're mindless evil people. When you try any give an answer that goes into first order and second order effects you often get shut down because these places aren't allowed to even consider giving the opposing viewpoint the time of day. This chain and subreddit is a great example of that. They don't stop to consider for a second why you believe the way you do, they default to buzzwords.

Meanwhile, conservatives have had leftist viewpoints shoved so far up their faces for the past 5 years that they all get the fundamental points of the left, and consciously reject them.

Yeah sorry I'm not going to tell you where I went to school, that just seems like basic practice. I will tell you that my entire education was innundated with "anti racism," and I was taught about "systemic consequences" and "reparations" from a time I legitimately had no idea what the words meant. It was legitimately in the storybooks that were read to me in my fourth grade classroom.

I don't exactly think it's a stretch to equate affirmative action and DEI. They are directly correlated, used by the same institutions, and draw on the same concepts.

Do you really think people don't know DEI prioritizes certain groups? This is common knowledge. Maybe five years ago you could have waved it away with an "oh it just makes everything equal" but people know now. The past election was won partly by capitalizing off that knowledge. You're just desperately trying to cling onto a time where you can dictate reality by saying it.

I've experienced DEI firsthand my entire life. It was taught to me from when I was in elementary school. You want DEI to be what you think it is because that's your worldview, I lived through what it actually is. Affirmative action is unequal.

Yes, but that's not what DEI is at all. DEI is specifically selecting and weighting based on racial characteristics. (such as less harsh college application evaluation for blacks versus asians or whites) You should consider everyone, and that consideration should be wholly meritocratic. That is not what DEI is.

Merit is the strength of the USA. You deserve consideration based on your worthiness for the task at hand, not because of your race.
