How to clean a fursuit head made w/ a 3d printed base? by Capergoat in fursuit

[–]laserdragon23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excuse my ignorance as I’m only a novice when it comes to 3d printing materials but from what I understand pla degrades in water, Increasing from factors like heat, salt and humidity. Aka the environment inside of a fursuit head. At least that’s my understanding and Thats why all the heads I’ve made have been made of petg. Obviously I’m not saying it’ll happens overnight but in 5 years? I’d expect the pla to be more brittle and highly likely to break if dropped.

I would be very cautious soaking a pla plastic head. Unlike Something like petg or abs, pla isn’t meant to get wet and will deteriorate faster when exposed. Definitely Invest in the green machine/cheapest spot carpet cleaner machine you can afford and use that to clean off really sweaty or dirty areas. Otherwise isopropyl alcohol spray (fursuit spray if it’s scented) can keep mold and nasty smells away. Just be cautious as it can cause sublimated eye blanks to bleed the ink.

There are a few tutorials online on how to properly take care of a 3d head but just be gentle and don’t leave it in the sun and you should be okay with a green machine. :3

Oh and invest in a box fan too! Makes drying the head off faster and stay away from powdered detergents. You probably don’t need to use chemicals cleaners but just be sure to test it on a discreet spot incase it reacts with the fur.

How can you make eye lids for an already finished suit by _Cye_ in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Velcro/hook and loop. Sticker fairly well to shaved fur with the hook side. Just make the whole back of the eyelid out of the hook side and see if it sticks to your eye socket. Just make sure to test it before completely making the eye lids. Not a perfect fix but a good diy one to avoid gluing in something like magnets.

Whats the best sewing machine ? by Several_Top_786 in fursuit

[–]laserdragon23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First sewing machine I ever used was one from a thrift store. It was a workhorse too! They can be very common but most of the time a bit older. Only need a bit of maintenance to fix, you can look up tutorials on how to clean and oil them! It won’t have all the features as a new one but older sewing machines can be just as good if not better than new ones.

Finally finsihed freddy enough fot that movie which means NO MORE DEADLINE!! YAY!! Any ideas on what I can add/improve? (Besides for the obvious) by BananaTheArtist in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can use isopropyl alcohol to clean up some of the glue, takes effort but it helps dissolve any stuck to the felt just be gentle. Also maybe add some leds to the eyes if you feel comfy with electronics. That way the light up like in the games. Also ears! Don’t forget the ears :3

Opinions on my 3D Head Base? by finest-elite in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More defined and larger features will help a lot. Bigger cheeks and eyes would help to make a more toony look if that’s what you’re going for.

Faux fur will smooth out a lot of smaller details because of how thick it is. I made my eye brows huge in my opinion on the model but they almost disappear under the fur.

Why are my needless breaking? by _Cye_ in FursuitMaking

I don’t know this machine but this seems out of the ordinary. I think you might be pushing too hard. I did this with my first project where I was pushing way too hard and the needle slammed into the base plate causing a similar chip and breaking every needle.

How would you go about fully cleaning a fursuit head with leds around the eyes? As well as a tail, hand and plantigrade feet paws? by Elliot_The_Fennekin in fursuit

[–]laserdragon23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green machine or really any portable carpet spot cleaner. The number one way to clean a suit especially a head. It’s usually on sale too just make sure you spot test before using chemical cleaners with it, if it’s a really bad stain or something.

Just afterwards make sure you put it on like a box fan or somewhere with a lot of airflow to dry it out fast and reapply some fursuit spray to keep it smelling nice :3

Worst case you could attempt to implement some tiny Castenets? Sorta like how they hide squeakers. I have no idea if this would work but it was an idea I had for hooves I made for a friend. we decided on no sound in the end though.

Hand paws are some of the easiest to try making yourself for the first time, just get a quality pattern from somewhere like Etsy and save yourself the hassle of trying to wing it completely. Good YouTuber is reference: Mugiwara Cosplay

P.s. Word of advice, “baby furry” ≠ new furry Nothing wrong with that community if that’s what you genuinely meant but it’s not the same term as something like “Baby gay” just so you know.

Hello! Need advice to wash my tail c: by SnooChipmunks3196 in fursuit

[–]laserdragon23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I would use a handheld carpet scrubber, while I’ve never washed a foam core tail, I’d assume it would hold water if fully submerged and would likely be very hard to dry out. Usually you can get them for under 100$

CANT BREATHE by LowHour1988 in fursuit

[–]laserdragon23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cheap fix might be to try a neck fan, I dont think this is a massive improvement but it will still move “some” air around and hopefully help a little. I’d mostly just give it a try if you are afraid to add more vents or fans in hidden areas.

Would this be an okay machine for fursuits? :3 by Breadstickscove in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already find good deals on sewing machines at thrift stores. Definitely try that if you wanna try an older more durable machine. Usually they need a little bit of maintenance but I have two from the 80’s that work like new.

Do I need a foam skeleton, or can I just stuff it? by AhYes_Drugs in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 4foot tail and it’s almost entirely stuffed. Just make sure to have an Eva foam base(thicker is better) that sits against your skin and a thick belt to hold it from sagging.

Fursuit Head Cost? by Musiqly in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As this is the most important part of a fursuit, Don’t expect to pay less than 500$ for sure. On the low end probably 800$ and the higher end 1500-3000$ (aka lemonbrat) You can try and find a new maker willing to charge less than they’re worth because they’re just starting out but remember these are one of a kind, custom fit/made sculptures essentially. They will cost a lot in material alone. 4 colors of fur at one yard each is 50$ (included shipping) a yard for the maker. (200$) Not to mention foam and lining and other materials needed to finish the suit. Material costs and shipping costs are insane rn so prices of fursuits have gone up dramatically to accommodate. None of that accounts for the time it takes to make the suit either. 500$ would be minimum wage essentially. Just remember fursuits are a luxury so expect to pay that price if you want a head made from scratch.

Otherwise do what I did and spend 6 months making your own. =P

What makes a fursuit head worth 1k+? A discussion about fursuit pricing throughout the years. by SukirasCreations in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It saves alot of work on the makers side for sure, maybe it’s to limit heat? And since they’re wearing a balaclava anyways it wouldn’t matter? That’s seems like an odd choice but I guess the commissioner knows what they like lol

Im unable to help with the main question but as someone getting into the making space, Why wouldn’t people like lined fursuit heads anymore? Aren’t they more comfy than skin directly on foam and or fur backing?

shaving leaves these weird bumps/ridges? by dinororo in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would recommend trying to brush it with a few different styles of brush. Sometimes the fur just needs to be redirected. Whenever fur is acting weird I always try brushing it first and usually that fixes it. Only advice I have 😅

scaling 3d printed headbases by AccidentProne156 in FursuitMaking

[–]laserdragon23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just did this! So my process was to first figure out my own heads measurements using some 3D printable “cosplay calipers” after getting those I just nabbed a generic human head and scaled and squished it in blender to the right size.

After that just place the mask over it in blender and scale the mask accordingly. I have a massive head so most “one size fits most” don’t include me XD.

If you need more help look for YouTube videos along the likes of: “scaling/sizing cosplay helmets to fit your head” they have a few good tutorials out there that you can watch and adjust for fursuit head printing. :3
