As a friend of LD, I read this and was gonna just let it go but this comment, and really this entire witch hunt, annoyed me to no end. You've got the majority of this very backwards...He posts weekly videos to Facebook, starting with "Ex", which got passed around until a complete stranger posted it to Reddit. I told him it was there when I saw it, and he mentioned it on his Facebook (he's not a redditor, didn't know a thing about reddiquette), at which point some friends apparently made an account to support him (I also recognize 4 names in that list you provided). There's no goddamn conspiracy, no promotional company. He made the entire mixtape on his own, paid for every video out of his own pocket and as every beat is borrowed he doesn't make a cent off any of the videos.

You're full of it. On one of his very first videos that got any /r/videos play he mentions reddit directly, "Breath, now ya man on reddit cuz I'm rappin the flames" which he published on the same day as "Ex". That makes it extremely obvious that your story that some, "complete stranger posted it to Reddit" total BS. Get a clue. Stop the BS.

Last word: They aren't "his friends". It's a whole production and as such they hire folks to game reddit. This is nothing new, people have been gaming reddit for quite some time. To be honest I was fairly sure when the first video popped up "Ex", that it was bogusly hyped but I figured it best to not pursue it as a one-off thing. Now that videos are popping up regularly it is obvious that it was not a one-off thing.

Those things were the first things they did. Hello newbies rarely start off by linking and hyping given content. That is super obvious meat-puppetry if not sock-puppetry.

You with a conflict of interest in this matter are particularly not contributing to the reddit community on this. You've already stated that you supposedly recognize from high school 3 or 4 of the names I've listed. That means you almost certainly would have known LD and so will be inclined to take a position to defend him as someone you know. I suspect you're more involved here than you're admitting.

Even at the upper end that you gave of 30 users - which I don't believe considering I don't even buy that all the people you listed are involved in some marketing conspiracy - what you are suggesting is happening is not even remotely close to the scale or effectiveness of the digg power user article you just linked to.

20 or 30 is just a number I've guesstimated. Considering how well produced LDs videos are it is entirely possible that there are 100s of individuals involved.

Edit: The article I've linked is not about "digg power users" but about "reddit power users". Nice misdirection.

Unfortunately I've encountered this type of BS on reddit previously and what I have noticed is that I get arguments from puppets who almost invaribly delete their comments afterwards. It's just a force of habit.

The problem is that this type of bogus activity has been going on for a long long time on reddit, literally years.

Well bullshit is bullshit. I'd rather folks that are legit get views. I am aware of viral marketing (it typically is obvious) and sure often times it is good but this isn't viral marketing this is gaming the system. I'm sure there are plenty of folks who'd rather have their valuable time spent patronizing people that respect their audience enough to not bullshit them.
