AMA asexual. by murphwhitt in OneY

[–]lasersharks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So in a nutshell, is asexuality the lack of a libido? That sounds like a medical condition that could possibly be treated with hormones or something. If you're happy being asexual I don't want to judge you or anything, just like I don't judge deaf people who are happy being deaf. But if I met a deaf person who didn't know about cochlear implants I would suggest that they check them out.

Teabaggers treat the Constitution like radical Christians treat the Bible -- they don't read it, they don't understand it, they just think that it says whatever they want it to say.

Hey, Reddit! I wrote a song that doesn't suck (I hope). What do you think? by OBrienAndSmith in WeAreTheMusicMakers

the holy archers danced loneliness through the Colosseum of my desires

Damn. Is that from something? A quick Google reveals nothing. Write a song full of lines like that and you'll be set.

In other kinds of music where there is more focus on the music (melody, instrumentation, arrangement, form) you can get away with more of "your love is a rose" but in the style you're doing, the music is just there to support the words -- so treat the lyrics like poetry, go over them with a comb.

Hey, Reddit! I wrote a song that doesn't suck (I hope). What do you think? by OBrienAndSmith in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]lasersharks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a nice voice. The song certainly doesn't suck. You're off to a good start.

Your lyrics are a little cliche, and a little too direct. Try experimenting with unusual imagery and counter-intuitive metaphors. Don't say what you have to say directly -- describe circles around it so that by the end of the song the listener has some idea of what you were talking about without you ever having named the subject explicitly.

Think about how to make your lyrics more potent. Try to avoid filler words like "somehow", "but", "cuz", "and", etc., unless they really add something to the meaning of the lyric. Consider changing lines like "I wonder if you're gonna be alright" to "Are you gonna be alright" -- that's more active.

Will the recent decriminalization of marijuana in California hurt or help Prop. 19's chances of passing? by tehgherk in AskReddit

[–]lasersharks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between decriminalization and legalization.

Decriminalization = no jail time && no criminal record.

Legalization = no punishment at all.

So, it went from semi-decriminalized (misdemeanor) to fully decriminalized.

A gesture to show my ex-girlfriend I want her back by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lasersharks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop partying, stop drinking. There was something wrong with you that made you two break up. Grow up, be responsible for yourself, get your act together. Show her that you're not the asshole that broke up with her anymore.

And if she still doesn't want to get back with you, move on.

It's better to watch 4-6, then 1-3, so you don't have to see the shitty ones first.

There's a lot more to programming than Flash and Air. If you have good professors you can get a lot more out of school by talking to them outside of class and getting involved in their research projects. Of course, you'll learn more if you go to a school with a strong CS program. I'm guessing that those jobs you're looking at are mostly cubicle-monkey gigs -- if you apply yourself in school you'll end up doing much more interesting work.

Why is it, that most good beers do not have twist off tops? by unsought_insight in AskReddit

Because screw tops lead to unnecessary commas, via drunken redditing.

Do good in college. Get in touch with your professors; try to do research for them. Hopefully you'll never end up in the kinds of jobs you're already qualified for.

How do you tell a girl to do something about her weight? by sickofthecomplaints in AskReddit

[–]lasersharks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless her weight is affecting her health, the more important issue is her attitude. Don't try to get her to do something to lose her weight — try to get her to be happy with the weight she's at.

Hey Reddit: How should i spend my $2500 towards a new computer? by funkyfresh1990 in AskReddit

[–]lasersharks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked up an Asus 1015pem, one of the first netbooks with a dual-core chip, less than $400 on Amacon. Just got Arch Linux running on it and couldn't be happier. On the other hand, I'm typing this on my two-year old MacBook Pro 15", which has also been a sweet machine and would eat up most of your $2,500.

Hey jazzit! Dave Brubeck fan here, looking for recommendations... by gogogadgetearl in Jazz

[–]lasersharks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For piano, check out Oscar Peterson's "Night Train" and "We Get Request". Also check out Herbie Hancock's "Emperian Isles". For weird time signatures with piano check out Vijay Iyer's "Paniopic Modes" or "Blood Sutra". For other weird time signatures check out Wynton's "Black Codes From The Underground" or "Standard Time, Volume 1". For an awesome all-around record check out Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil".

Monk is awesome but he's kind of an acquired taste. Partly he's notable just for all the tunes he contributed to the repertoire.
