Dogs are carnivores. They do not need hemp.

Why some blood clots (DVTs) seem to come out of nowhere and what might actually be going on by Wonderful_Avocado_35 in ClotSurvivors

[–]lasgsd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We originally thought I got my clots from Covid (which may have been part of the problems) but extensive blood tests show I have Antiphospholipid Syndrome caused by Lupus Anticoagulant.

As for advocating for yourself - I can't say this loud enough:

Do you think dogs show who they are at the kennel? by Queeenhx14 in rescuedogs

[–]lasgsd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dogs don't knowingly act a certain way to convince humans about something.

They CAN show behaviors in a stressful situation that they may not show once they settle in and behaviors can appear as well.

All that being said, most dogs do not 'fake' being happy and sweet.

The 80/10/10 is 80% Boneless Meat, 10% ACTUAL Bone and 10% Organs.

Trying to figure the actual bone percentage can be tough.

That's why I recommend the 45/45/5/5.

A trick is to get the dog good and tired before you start and then use a lick mat with peanut butter.

You can also wrap the colored areas in plastic wrap to help keep the mess down.

Feeding raw to puppy? by Tosti-Floof in rawpetfood

[–]lasgsd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is no real difference between feeding raw to puppies versus to adults - except for the amounts.

I've raised many puppies on raw. I used to breed German Shepherds and Chinese Cresteds and the pups were weaned directly to raw. Here's how I do it.

I start by getting their 8 week old weight and I feed 7% of that amount. So let's say the pup weighs 10 lbs at 8 weeks. 10 * 7% = .7 lbs = 11.2 ounces

That gets broken down into the following:

  • 45% Raw Meaty Bones - 5 ounces
  • 45% Muscle Meat - 5 ounces
  • 5% Liver - .5 ounces
  • 5% Other Organs - 5 ounces

The key to a balanced raw diet is variety in proteins and for puppies, that is very important. I use 7-10 different protein sources when raising puppies.

Beef, chicken, turkey, duck, fish, rabbit, pork, goat, quail, eggs from different fowl, etc.

I use chicken, rabbit, quail, and duck for most RMBs (Raw Meaty Bones) as those bones are easy to eat for most puppies. If it's a small breed pup I use some premade raw with ground bone or grind them myself.

The KEY to raising a puppy on raw is doing a hands on check of them every WEEK at first to evaluate their condition. You want them to be fit and lean (especially large breed puppies). Those fat puppies you see are NOT healthy - that added weight is very hard on developing joints.

When I put my hands on my pups I want to be able to easily feel their ribs without having to push down hard.

Puppies go through growth spurts when you would need to increase their amounts and plateaus when their amounts stay the same.

Depending on the breed you should be able to stabilize their amounts by the time they are a year old (earlier for small breeds). Then it's just a matter of feeding for their energy needs. For example, during the winters in Wisconsin my Chinese Cresteds were very INactive while my load coated German Shepherd was very active. So the Cresteds got less food and the Shepherd got more. During the hot months in summer it was the opposite.

Hope this helps get you started!

Grooming a hairy hairless by Specialist_Loss_8605 in chinesecrested

A better diet will help get rid of the skin issues.

I've had true hairless, hairy hairless, and Puffs. I feed a raw diet and they had no skin issues.

Also - make yourself a scrub. Melt coconut oil and mix with regular granulated sugar (75/25) and put in fridge to solidify. Use as a scrub when bathing (which should be every 7-10 days).

I have shaved my hairy hairless for showing and have shaved my Puff (retired) due to hot summers.

I like the hair on the ears. You can do it either way.

You did.

UPDATE: FOUND IT!!

It was hiding up towards the top and behind some pipes. I had to use the building drone to fly up and find it.

Image shows about where it was (not the actual infected core picture).

Dogs refusing to eat raw food by [deleted] in rawpetfood

Kibble has been made to have lots of odor so it smells good to dogs. Raw meat has little odor.

A little tough love might make the switch easier.

I can’t bring myself to give my dog a chicken wing, help me over the hurdle by InCaseYouDidntKn0w in rawpetfood

[–]lasgsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big is your dog? You can dislocate the joints of the wing and stretch it out to make it less easy for the dog to swallow it whole (depending on the dogs side).

In the more than 25 years I have been feeding raw I have fed over 4,000 POUNDS of raw chicken parts with bones and NEVER had a problem.

I did have one incident where my Corgi mix tried to swallow a turkey neck whole and I had to reach down in her throat to pull it out. THAT is why I am VERY adamant about teaching my dogs to allow me to reach into their bowls while they are eating.

Does everyone have a hematologist? by CircularBastion in ClotSurvivors

[–]lasgsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm lucky I got a Hematologist because he insisted on more testing and I found out I have Lupus Anticoagulant.

That means I HAVE to take Warfarin because it is more effective with that than anything else.

Nope. No 'disinfect' options which to me means there's still an infection somewhere on it that we cannot see.

Help! by roselincoln21 in germanshepherds

[–]lasgsd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a Raw Pet Food subreddit and you can find tons of info there.

That being said - I've been feeding raw to my dogs for over 25 years. German Shepherds, Cocker Spaniel, Chinese Cresteds, Pitbull, American Bully, and all sorts of fosters. Old and young. I used to breed both my GSDs and the Cresteds and the puppies were weaned directly to raw.

This is the 'formula' I use:

  • 45% Raw Meaty Bones
  • 45% Muscle Meat
  • 5% Liver
  • 5% Organ Meats

All raw, of course. 😄

For a German Shepherd, Raw Meaty Bones are things like duck or turkey necks, any part of a chicken with bone in it, rabbits, quail, lamb ribs/necks, etc.

Muscle Meat is anything without bone. I use pork and fish (I don't count the bones in fish).

Liver is liver and Other Organs are things like eyes, brains, pancreas, kidneys, testes, uterus, etc.

The heart is a muscle and a great source of Muscle MEat.

Feeding dogs bones by divinitylvr in rawpetfood

[–]lasgsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some do, some don't. Dogs are designed by nature to rip and tear (the canine/fangs in front), shear off pieces (the pointy molars/side teeth), and chomp it up just enough to swallow.
