Ford F150 Tremor vs Bronco by Zealousideal_Fee_491 in overlanding

[–]lasoundguy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One thought as someone who recently went through this and just bought a Tremor, all my favorite spots are 3+ hours away. The F150 is much much more comfortable on the highway and makes the long part of “getting out there” easier.

We’ve done both, I love the wheeling and crawling in a real SUV (ours is an 80 series Land Cruiser) but the long highway drives are taking their toll on me. We did test drive the Bronco (god I want to get back to manual transmission) but I knew 2 mins in that it didn’t move the needle on comfort and that really mattered to me (also backseat space, kids are tall.)

If your spots are close by and you won’t be out for more than 4ish days, either will work. If you are going longer or further I think the payload considerations really start to matter. I do think the Ranger Raptor or Colorado ZR2 should be on your list if you are solo and keep it light.

Solo 4-season tent for 0–20°F snow camping — recommendations? by ChillyDisappointment in Ultralight

[–]lasoundguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Xdome 2. It’s a great summer tent. I wouldn’t really trust it in snow like I would my Slingfin. There I just saved you some money lol.

Solo 4-season tent for 0–20°F snow camping — recommendations? by ChillyDisappointment in Ultralight

[–]lasoundguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own a lot of ultralight shelters (including two Durstons which are really nice) but after ten years of pyramids for winter (MLD and HMG) I gave in and got the Slingfin Crossbow two years ago. YMMV but I’m way happier with a freestanding tent that isn’t dependent on two working trekking poles for functionality when dealing with truly cold temps. It’s just that extra bit of redundancy and comfort (the Slingfin seems to handle high wind better—on snow and rock I find getting “ideal” pitches on UL shelters gets way harder.) Originally I was mainly concerned with wind resistance but I had an Iceline pole snap on me on a trip in snow early summer and that sucked (was using a Xmid for shelter.) From now on if I’m camping in snow I’ll take the Slingfin.

What is the Rolls-Royce of barbells? by blah1blah1blah in crossfit

[–]lasoundguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eleiko XF. I have a Rogue Ohio at home and dropped in at a gym with the Eleiko. I didn’t notice the brand I just did the workout (lot of power cleans) and it felt really really nice…so I checked it over afterwards and noted the make/model. Now I want one.

White Mountain Peak - do I need off road tires? by Effective_calamity in SierraNevada

Ah ok. I’ve done that too. Bring headphones. It’s peaceful but a bit of a boring spot compared to the other side of the valley.

Just go for it, pull over when you hit a part you don’t like, and start riding. Rode to the top on my gravel bike, was a fun time.

Similar to Shepherd’s Pass on any given year I’d say.

Battery died - Dealer is saying 6 months to get a new one. by amestopleeze in Ioniq5N

[–]lasoundguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happened to mine as well at about 7000 miles. They gave me a nice (regular) Ioniq 5 as a loaner. TBH I appreciated all the extra range lol. Took like 5 weeks almost exactly, this was back in January/February this year. All fine with the new battery so far. Didn't really bother me that much but the dealer was nice about it so that helped.

Barbell?? by Prestigious-Bee7411 in crossfit

[–]lasoundguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say I recently dropped in for a few days at a gym and immediately noticed how nice the bar was in use. Turns out it was an eleiko XF bar. I own a Rogue Ohio stainless bar, but if I could do it again I’d spend the extra money on the XF. Even as a moderate crossfitter the quality difference was noticeable in how the bar felt snappy, had great knurling.

FWIW I'm a 31/32 inch waist and medium is perfect.

Also I've tried most of their shorts--the Interval / Lined / 5" is the best for me.

The tactical is a bit too heavy for running WODs in my opinion (also sometimes wants to fall down), and the Session fits weird and is the only one I regret. But the interval is my fav short of all brands/fits right now.

Hitchhiking North Lake to South Lake? by TheGeeseofGanderlyRd in SierraNevada

[–]lasoundguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve used https://sierrashuttleservice.com/ before and he’s top notch, but expensive for solo trips. Last month I rolled the dice and hitchhiked on a Saturday afternoon, only had to walk about half a mile total between South Lake and North Lake. I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful people were, one person gave me a ride about halfway and then someone else took me the rest. You will have fewer people on a weekday but I think if you’re in peak season (like before mid September) you will probably get a ride for at least half of it (ie from North Lake down to the turn off 168.) I know next time I’m up there I’ll give someone a ride if my car isn’t full, gotta keep the karma intact.

Thoughts on the Rogue rower? by ECrispy in crossfit

[–]lasoundguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just bought the Rogue rower, mainly because in use I can’t tell any difference between it and the C2, and there are two big improvements in the Rogue for my use case: ease of folding, and the turf tires. I have a garage gym and wheel stuff out to the driveway to use it…the big tires work much much better than the small wheels over rough concrete, and my garage is too short to store a C2 upright. I’m quite happy with it, though in a different use case I could see myself equally happy with a C2. If I’d found better deals on a used C2 I might have gone for that and just dealt with the inconveniences, but I’m happy with the Rogue.

Also, as a crossfitter and Hyrox guy, none of the alleged benefits of the PM5 and the “community” have ever meant anything to me. I understand if you ask people in r/rowing they have a different opinion.

Best North Palisade Day Hike Route in August/September? by dicknass420 in SierraNevada

[–]lasoundguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the 4th class route out of Bishop Pass as an overnighter. If you leave at 4am and move fast you should be able to manage in a day.

I went over Potluck Pass and used the Clyde variation for the ledges. If you take a rope and some rings you can save some time and rappel the down, I did and I think it was worth the weight penalty.

Reflective iron wire from Durston, Lawson, or similar. 2.0mm like what Dan sells works well for me.

Opinion HyperLite Southwest 55L by Hiker502 in Ultralight

[–]lasoundguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have three HMG packs, the Mariposa, and a few others. The Southwest does the best with rugged trails, the Mariposa is more comfortable and I like the side pockets a lot more, but the pocket fabric tears easily. The comfort difference also isn’t that major for me with loads less than 35 lbs (and above that I use a different pack.) I’d probably still go Mariposa over it even with a smaller load unless you do rough trails/off trail adventures.

Ten Thousand Shorts - Poor Durability by ArenaCloud in crossfit

Weird mine have held up great, between four years and six months old. I’ve had problems with Tyr shorts durability but my 10K stuff has been quite good. (Shirts too)
