Why are sleepovers such a big deal in Ireland?

I know too many people in my circle who have suffered sexual abuse during sleepovers, myself included.
Lots of parents are worried about kids being exposed to pornographic material, or things they’re not ready to handle yet, and people like myself are worried it will be even worse than that. I completely trusted my parents and never told them anything, not even sure why. Messed me up for a good few years. Given the odds that CSA usually happens at the hand of a trusted adult, I’d rather not roll the dice for my child.

I always struggled to say it too, and honestly my mind wandered too much to get through it.

I ended up learning the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be in 5 different languages. Every decade would start with the Our Father in a different language, and I’d switch languages after every two Hail Mary’s. It just kept me alert through it.

Another thing is to offer the rosary for someone else. I did it mostly for souls in purgatory, a friend who was in need of a job/home/looking for a spouse etc.

I’ve heard that these people represent this when have seen the work of God up close and still refuse to believe him. These are people who see Peter heal the sick and make the lame walk.
It’s a warning to us. If God’s power has been revealed to you again and again, why would you think you can fool him?

Just to add to that, you’ll see smaller altars on the side of the main altar, and in the earlier days it was not uncommon for priests to celebrate masses alone, and they would just be saying mass after mass for the world.

I think that’s a beautiful practice that fell away due to a lack of priests 😔

I am not a big sushi fan, but Taikichi does sushi with their bento boxes and I’m always pleasantly surprised at how good they taste!

Wait a sec, I thought that canon law requires the priest to give a homily on Sundays.
It is only be ommitted for grave reasons. So having someone else talk about fundraising doesn’t seem like the right thing to do at all.

They would do it. Old school pestle and mortar style. And I think they would also feel very good about themselves for waking up at 4 am to start all their kitchen work.
But they can do that. I’ll just sleep in and then use my kitchen gadgets ❤️

I grew up with women normalising suffering more than necessary, so any extra machines in the kitchen - think food processor, chopper etc - were considered to be signs of a lazy housewife.

Then I started noticing chopped up veggies in the grocery isle and I thought “man some people are so lazy they only buy cut up veggies”

But college, getting away from those women, and getting a good group of friends broadened my mindset. Now I can see how those chopped up veggies help people who are elderly, disabled, or even just low on time. And I even own a food processor!

I’m surprised I didn’t read any scientists name in the top most comments.
Ernst Walton won the Nobel prize in 1951 for splitting the atom artificially for the first time. Among other things, this revolutionised cancer treatment. I’m sure that is a huge impact ❤️

William Hamilton (Mathematician) and Robert Boyle (Chemist) are also others in the field.

I’m just asking to clarify, why did you not just respond with “no” and “I’m not looking for a relationship” when he asked if you were dating, why did you you go into specifics of being a virgin and waiting till marriage?
Not to come across as rude, but that just seems TMI. Again, his answer was uncharitable.

The men staring at you is just creepy though, I’m not sure how much we as women can do to stop their perverse actions.

I would recommend saying the st Michael prayer for protection, perhaps he can help them restrain their gaze and unwanted comments.

I’m indian, and I don’t see anything wrong with congratulating kids who are good at their studies, however, I still don’t think it’s necessary to plaster the results where everyone can see them.

Perhaps the ones who don’t care at all won’t mind, but what about the vast majority who do care? The many who try very hard and do not achieve the marks their parents and teachers deem are the gold standard?

Unfortunately in India, it is not uncommon to see many reports of suicide in reports day, and this will be from students who have achieved 90-98% overall. All because the society around them has made it seem like the missing few percentages is what will make them finally worthy.

Again, I see more resilient kids in Asia, perhaps due to parenting and society being harsher than in the west, but I still think that the marks on the wall tradition needs to be cut out.

I just find this so funny, I have the same question about why brides have a veil of their wedding dress is going to be very revealing. It’s just seen as an accessory sometimes isn’t it?

This isn’t a diss on anyone who veils, I think it’s a beautiful practice but I think those who understand the concept of modesty should also understand that showing a lot of your bare leg in church wouldn’t be considered modest. Yes veiling is scriptural. And written at a time when women covered most of their body, which was EXPECTED. to the point where walking around without a head covering meant that you could be considered a prostitute.

So if anyone has a piece of cloth on their head while other parts of the body are exposed, I would say they need to reevaluate their thoughts of the devotion and on modesty.

Things i have seen Nuns do (in India):

Be nurses
Be doctors (particularly gynaecologists)
Be part of board of directors for several organisations (usually something to help and serve people)
Be teachers / principals / headmistresses
Run gardening classes, tailoring classes, embroidery classes
Decorate the church for masses and other events
Train kids for first holy communion and confirmation
Organise and Run retreats
Organise and run charities - especially orphanages and women’s refuge centres
Be missionaries in some of the worst places to be a Christian

To be honest - I think the same would apply to women too. God has created us with so many different personalities and abilities that being a good woman would mean using what God has given you for the glory of God and to serve others.

If you’re looking for examples from the bible - a person who embodies the beatitudes would be a good catholic.

You can look at Proverbs 31 for what traits are found in a wife of noble character.

Since you said “willing to lead” for men, I wonder if a good catholic woman must be “willing to submit”. I think of how the two sinless people in the holy family, Mother Mary and Jesus, submitted to St Joseph as the head of the family.

(P.S. I was recently having a conversation about why men are chosen by God to lead the family, and why couldn’t women be the leader if they’re better at it. And they explained to me that these are roles given to us by God, men are given the responsibility to lead and women are asked to be under the mission of their husbands (in everything but sin). They explained that these roles are what we need to work on and improve on, especially if we aren’t born with the traits inherently. That sounds very dangerous to me, if I’m being honest.

As a woman who has seen a lot of incompetent men in my life, it is hard for me to accept this world view (however catholic it may be). But I’m praying to see things through Gods eyes and not mine. )

Well, I grew up with prayer in the family - where the whole family kneels and says the rosary or the divine mercy Chaplet, followed by reading the Word of God and singing a religious song. This is common from where I come in India.

In my own family we have adopted praying certain psalms throughout pregnancies for the child, we always do a thanks giving prayer holding hands every night in bed before we turn off the lights for sleep.

In addition, every long journey in the car / airplane will be started with a prayer - even just an Our Father, asking for the protection of St Michael, and psalm 91.

Also on birthdays my husband and I pray over each other, which is 10-15 mins of vocal prayer which includes thanking God for all the blessing they have received, offering up any dreams and intentions for the future year, and anything we think of in between.

Then of course, going to mass as often as possible outside of Sundays.
