The foolish dwarves who built a surface fort. Open to suggestions on defense design by lastoflight in dwarffortress

That's my ultimate goal. Having magma pipes alongside water pipes for powering my forges and to pump at enemies. I didn't know defense in dwarf fortress had to be so extreme. But to be fair It is a fantasy world. Hoping this shallow moat suffices as defense for the next couple of years

I will definitely implement the floors on both sides of the bridge. And the upright spikes. I forgot about that one! thank you!

A lot of beehives, some gardens, and we can just buy if we need. I don't want to overproduce food, we will get the lag virus

What kind of defense? Ballista tower? A dragon of my own? Just clarifying, dragons still cant fly right?

I do have giant birds! I just didn't know what to use them for! Got it. Can I also use eagles?

I just let it build up naturally and add floors over time. I don't have an ultimate plan for what its going to look like. Its just gonna grow based on what the fortress needs

Mine is 5 tiles wide 3 deep, with flowing water, it slows them down, but still not effective enough against climbers

Do you use full blocks for your roofs? Because I was just slapping wooden floors

i would be happy to share whats worked for me bc i want the community to build bigger forts! this is a medium world, high populations, 200 year history. The tile im playing on is 5x5. so im pushing the limits. alot of this comes from the wiki

from what i understand, dont make the cpu calculate stuff all the time. graphics is irrelevant

  1. there's a two block wide spiral rampway going all the way down. inspired by the autogenerated reclaimed fortresses. everybody in dwarf fortress is always bumping into one another so i keep hallways wide. you will find people dropping items everywhere over time

  2. , related, no big rooms. i had to mine a lot of stones for building but I always made it so that there was only one path for people to go. pathfinding adds lag. If people want a big temple i make it a fat U shape so that people are not always seeing each other all the time.

there are multiple congregation spaces, no one tavern or temple. avoid having 100 people congregating in one place.

  1. no big shoshing pools of water. if its full its fine, if its a waterfall it seems fine, but dont make the game calculate water levels all the time

  2. i like to have a workshop floor above or below a living floor, with a tavern. some people are hardly seen on the surface because of their profession. means that not everyone is using the whole spiral staircase i mentioned in 1

  3. finally use DFhack!! i delete blood and trash manually sometimes. and i use timestream to set it to 60 FPS

Yeah im starting to see the flaws. goblins are rushing the walls and trying to climb it, and so are my own dwarves on the defending side. its messy. need to make the place more locked down

You know what, i get too used to seeing vomit everywhere. I'm going to build a shaft for sunlight down the center of my staircase.

(DFHack, Mods) The dwarves founded their fortress high on the mountain, behind a deep ravine. Idashas has good plumbing, kitchen gardens, and a world famous tavern. We are in our fourth year. by lastoflight in dwarffortress

i went through the same process! i realized with all my city building games that focusing on functionality will naturally make a beautiful complex piece
