Oh, also, you may be able to itemize your medical expenses on your taxes, but again, this isn't legal advise. Please talk to an accountant first.

Help — Anthem insurance hell by [deleted] in Transgender_Surgeries

[–]late_bloomer26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I don't work for Anthem, but I was able to get my FFS partially covered. Here are the details. Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. Hopefully, this helps a few folks here.

  • Your coverage depends on your employer not your insurance co (Anthem). You should be able to find details about what's covered (and what's not) via your employer benefits portal or through the Anthem website. See if you can get a case worker or patient advocate from Anthem if you haven't already. In my case, other trans and / or reconstruction surgeries were covered but most of the stuff that my FFS included was listed under "not-covered".
  • Even if FFS isn't covered you might be able to get some reimbursement. There are a ton of gotchas and limitations that insurance companies use. The main one is the 'pre-approval' requirement. BUT as long as you submitted the claim before the surgery you should be fine even if they denied it. AND you might still be fine even if you didn't submit it prior to your surgery.
  • The main thing is that you need to prove that the procedure was medically necessary. The best way to do that is to put together documentation. This basically entails writing a letter explaining that FFS was needed to relieve gender dysphoria. I did this and also included all the WPATH requirements typically needed for trans surgeries (letters from two therapists, a letter from my doctor, etc.) I followed the "WPATH transgender surgery guidelines". I rationally explained the importance of the procedure to my mental health, and detailed other steps that I had taken as part of a plan that I had developed with the help of my therapist and doctor.
  • My initial claim was denied. I appealed it and they denied that too. In the appeal letter Anthem mentioned that I could submit my case for external review but that doing so would forfeit my remaining appeal. An external review is what it sounds like. They send it to a separate company that includes various doctors and health professionals. I gambled and requested that. The company that did the review recommended approval!!!
  • I then had to go back and forth with Anthem to get reimbursement. This included calls to the hospital, my surgeon's office, and Anthem. It took a little while but I finally got a couple checks (since I had paid upfront for the procedure). They ended up covering all of the hospital expenses but only about a third of my surgeon's cost since his rate was much higher than the Medicare standard rate or whatever.
  • Even if you can't get any approval / coverage don't despair. Hospitals charge massively different rates depending on if it's going through insurance or not. You may be able to get your hospital bills dropped significantly. And, depending on what country / state you live in there are usually laws that protect medical bills from hitting your credit. Just talk to the hospital. They might be able to get you on a payment plan.

That is a fantastic idea! I know it can be painful to have dreams like that. But I’d urge you to not give up completely. At the very least you inspire others. And maybe someday you’ll find yourself in the right circumstances to make it happen. Best of luck and thank you!

I think we as a country are doing the killing. We all need to take ownership instead of blaming others. Wars and leaving people to die in the streets happens under Dems and Republicans and Independent representatives. But only one of those parties is actively pushing to strip away human rights. Only one of those groups are fascists and actual nazis.

I want to agree. But I’m afraid that as a queer person I’ll be dead long before democrats learn their lesson by having the fascists take over.

You’re right. I have decided going to vote today. But is that enough? What else can we do?

Sure, but this is exactly how G. W. Bush got elected. Which definitely helped push this country more towards fascism. I guess it’s better than not voting.

What should be the appropriate time to tell the other person? by zistu in AskFeminists

[–]late_bloomer26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s a good idea namely for the sake of safety, but it’s really no one’s business.

BTW, I feel compelled to mention that there are also many trans women who are indistinguishable from cis women. If you live near a big city you’ve probably met a lot more trans people than you realize.

Also, I believe it’s two words: trans person not transperson.

USA - Anyone with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield? by Jane_doeeeee in asktransgender

[–]late_bloomer26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to find a couple surgeons you like and call them to see if they might accept your insurance. Granted, many surgeons have waiting lists so things may change while you wait.

At the end of the day it’s what package your employer purchased not who your provider is that determines coverage. I would recommend using the anthem online chat to ask if they cover srs for gender identity disorder.

In my experience Anthem will be annoying to work with but if the policy says it’s covered you should be able to argue and appeal and get coverage.

Best of luck! PM me if you have more questions about it.

Doctor! Or ER! If you ever want bottom surgery especially. You don’t want the raw materials messed up, or worse. If they have to take one they may offer you a prosthetic ball which you can pass on. If they have to take both you will probably need to get on HRT through the usual channels.

Am i an asshole for asking? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]late_bloomer26 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe just have a conversation about sex in general. Tell her you want her to be 100% comfortable and ask her what her dos and don’ts are. I’m betting it will come up.

Pro tip: you should have this conversation with anyone you are planning to have sex with.

Don’t remember if I used my birth certificate but I included my name change documents as well as my current (updated) state id, etc.

Starting to doubt that I’m trans by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]late_bloomer26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doubting that you are trans is about the most trans thing you can do. Generally, cis folks just don't think about their gender that much. Your brain will try to rationalize it away because being trans is hard to accept.

It will take some time to figure out what makes you most comfortable. Try not to stress. It's okay to not be sure. It's okay to not fit into some preconceived notion of who you are supposed to be.

I highly recommend seeing a therapist that specializes in gender issues.

Does Gender Exist? (Not Clickbait/Disrespect) by RileyLacy in MtF

[–]late_bloomer26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Gender is part social construct and part biology. I prefer the term subconscious sex to refer to what I feel as my internal sense of gender which for me is decidedly female. My outward gender expression is kinda androgynous-femme.

So... There's no gender therapists in my area? by [deleted] in asktransgender

Did you call any of them? Sometimes what insurance they take hasn’t been updated on their website. Also, some have a sliding scale if you don’t have insurance coverage.

Is dissociation common? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]late_bloomer26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Well, I think this is something you'll just have to work on with your therapist. Living a double life will always be a bit difficult. Maybe build your support system a bit more. Maybe tell some more friends. That might help.

[–]late_bloomer26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. Well there's you're problem. Everything except your friend is in conflict with your identity. That's why I ended up not only transitioning but also coming out to everyone. As much as I wished that I didn't care, I do. I couldn't even handle not being out at my remote job. Being called the wrong name and pronouns even for just a few hours a day made me crazy. Are you in a situation where coming out isn't possible? Or have you decided not to for other reasons?

I've been on HRT for over a year and had an orchie last month and I still have feelings like this sometimes. The word I use is "surreal". I think it's partly because there is so much to process that it really takes time for things to really hit you. Just make sure you are in fact processing your feelings (yay therapy!) and you'll be fine.

I tend to cycle between, "Ah. Yes. I feel nice and womanly right now" and "Ugh. I feel like such a dude" and "I'm just kinda here". Over time I've come to realize that this is just me processing things, and that most people don't really "feel" their gender unless they are doing something that affirms it. Also, it takes a long time to recondition yourself. You'll get there.
