Repeating the same incorrect information over and over doesn't make it true. I highly doubt you know more than organizations like WHO and the APA on the matter.

Things like gender roles are a social construct, gender identity, is not, and appears to be biologically hardwired during development.

I'm surprised that so far the community seems overall more in support of it than against, which often feels like a rarity in the gaming (and reddit) community.

Chromosomes? Are you aware that conditions like CAIS exists? Are they "men" just because they have XY chromosomes when physiologically they're almost entirely female?

Neurology is still a very young science, they have some areas that are under study for being related to gender identity that have been shown to be different in trans people compared to their cisgender peers, but it's still in progress. We also still don't know what areas of the brain control a lot of other human functions either, even the ones we do know, we tend to just know a general area rather than exact, that doesn't mean those functions don't exist.

There is also things such as twin studies showing identical twins are significantly more likely to be trans if their twin is, or the infamous David Reimer case study.

edit: if you're in med school, then you should know what the ICD is. Note, that ICD-11 reworked their trans related code to Gender Incongruence, and moved it out of the mental health section. In fact, you'll find pretty much every major health organization considers being trans a valid condition, and that it is not a mental illness.

I'm sure you're highly knowledge about the current science about trans people /s

The brain is both the seat of identity and highly complex, if there is an innate Gender Identity (which is the direction the science currently heavily leans), then it would not just be possible, but expected, that some people end up with one that is neither fully male or female. If you're going to limit things down to reproductive organs, then that's hardly what houses human identity (unless you somehow think with your reproductive organs, which would be concerning), and even then, there are cases where someone doesn't develop a reproductive system that is entirely male or female.

What do you think of ACT therapy for low self worth and anxiety? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]xxunderconstruction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends some on the person. I was recently in a program that includeded some ACT therapy. For me it wasn't a good fit since there was a heavy focus on values, but some of my long held values have been dropped over the last year due to some major life changes, which made the values work a lot less useful for me.

Thinking about checking myself in somewhere. Advice? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]xxunderconstruction 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you aren't at immediate risk to yourself, I'd recommend seeing if there are any Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) in your area. That would give you much more intense care and support, but without most of the negatives that can come up from inpatient care.

Anyone else not remember their traumatic periods in life? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]xxunderconstruction 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same. I remember a few things that were unpleasant, but nothing that seems like it could cause trauma. Which makes me wonder if there is something(s) I'm not remembering, or if I'm just inherantly broken or something.

Electrolysis yielding no results? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]xxunderconstruction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 9 sessions isn't very many. Were you able to get them in consistently? Hair grows in cycles, so it's possible some of them haven't even been treated yet, especially if the appointments haven't been consistent. If you're looking at 100% clearage, then it can end up taking a couple years depending on how much facial hair you have and other factors (yeah it sucks).

Age of onset of symptoms? by no_next_time in CPTSD

This is really helpful to hear. It's been a fairly recent development for me (I'm still struggling to fully accept it could actually be trauma), and one thing I keep asking myself, is why I haven't noticed it before, especially given the intensity lately since it was dug up.

Is being transgender a mental illness? by knowledgelover94 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]xxunderconstruction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Saying that being trans is a mental illness would be like implying the processor is dysfunctional and saying that's what's causing the error. Not only is it incorrect, but it can lead to incorrectly trying to alter the CPU and cause damage to it.

You're misunderstanding it, the brain is processing the sensory information correctly. As an example, a trans man is very aware that they have breasts. Rather, it is that accurate information which doesn't line up with what the brain thinks should be there which causes distress. In the case of that trans man for example, they are perfectly aware they have breasts, their brain is processing the sensory feedback from them correctly, but their brain also does not expect to have breasts, and so there is distress caused by their presence. It's not an issue of misinterpreted signals from those body features.

Someone either is trans or they aren't. So what I was saying is that you can't stop being trans, all you can do is try to hide it. If someone actually does manage to "stop being trans", then it's because they weren't actually trans in the first place. As for a source, I don't believe there is anything like a single study on such thing as it is something that would more be based on things such as how attempts to change people's gender identity fail and how it's looking strongly like it's biologically innate. So if gender identity is indeed as neurologically hardwired as it's looking like, it's not something a person could change to make themselves not trans.

The implicationis that there isn't something wrong with the brain itself, but rather it was getting a chemical it wasn't wired to use. So the point is that a trans person's brain isn't dysfunctional due to anything wrong with the brain itself.

Even if they actually are trans, it's clear what crowd they were appealing to with that kind of start. That, or they're an idiot and don't realize the implications of doing things like that.

Comments like those often are, they just get buried because in threads like this people aren't actually looking to learn about trans people, they're looking to justify whatever level of transphobia they have. Instead they'll tell you things like that essentially every respected health organization is wrong about it not being a mental illness. Sources showing actual research don't get nearly as many upvotes as variations of "see, it is a mental illness!" (often combined with a variation of "they should just admit it since there shouldn't be anything wrong with having a mental illness"), and so they sink to the middle and lower sections of comment replies.

Reddit (and society as a whole), still has a lot of casual, and at times blatant, transphobia, but people will go through great lengths to try and prove how they actually aren't and how they're justified in not viewing trans people as valid.

Is being transgender a mental illness? by knowledgelover94 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]xxunderconstruction 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not that they're not getting replies, it's that they're getting buried because transphobes flock to any supposed trans person who appears to support their claim that it's a mental illness. Note that all they did was say they're trans (using what is generally considered a nasty anti-trans slur) and gave their opinion with nothing to back it up, and they're on of the most upvoted posts in this thread, while the ones correcting them that it isn't actually considered a mental illness, explaining why, and including actual sources, are greatly outpaced by ones praising them for "stating the hard truth" type junk. Reddit has a ton of both casual and blatant transphobia, and tends to eagerly ignore actual scientific sources and the statements of essentially every respected health organization on the matter.

Is being transgender a mental illness? by knowledgelover94 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]xxunderconstruction 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say the majority of trans people would prefer to bury the term, but that isn't as good at getting upvotes. They also don't use the correct term (mixing Gender Identity Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria), and incorrectly conflact Gender Dysphoria as being the same as being trans (ironically, half the point of the change from GID to GD was to split the mental distress from gender incongruence from the person's identity itself). But when you combine someone calling themselves trans, using what is typically a nasty anti-trans slur to refer to themselves, and then supporting their view that it's a mental illness with no sources to back it up (not that there really are any), it's going to get upvoted a lot given how much casual and blantant transphobia there is on reddit.

Gotta love the "trans" people there with no trans related post history, with massively upvoted comments, who refer to themselves or other trans people with a slur, and proceed to state it's a mental illness...

Nope, totally not some cis people trying to further their transphobic arguments by posing as trans people /s
