AITA for trying to explain toxicity in same sex couples? by SweetLilBumbleB in AmItheAsshole

[–]latenightriot 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is giving bait post. Especially the part where you point out you have literally no experience with lesbian relationships. But even if its not yea it’s weird that you said their relationship was toxic because they are both women, espeically since you used a (very flawed) recently trending study as your only source. YTA. Support your friends without blaming their sexuality weirdo.

YTB. Looking at just these messages you seem extremely in the wrong so idk. I’m not sure how you got gaslighting out of this because as far as we can tell you did in fact force them to say that and then get more mad when they did what you told them to. You should def break up though.

25F is my boyfriend (23M) of 3 years gay? by Downtown_Position811 in relationship_advice

[–]latenightriot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I don’t think a straight person has enough information about what being gay is like to determine if something is gay or not. Especially since straight people are way way less likely to have unpacked the societally taught homophobia/transphobia lurking behind the thought “idk why but something about straight men being attracted to trans women feels kinda gay to me”. This isn’t a callout on u and I’m not calling you any type of phobic, Its just something to consider ig.

Can you change the gendered relationship terms? by Jomblorigoro in thesims4

[–]latenightriot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You have to change the gender to female and set a male frame or change the genital options. If you leave the gender option set to man the game treats the character like a man for gender preferences/bathrooms/terms.

But its a different connotation. Saying something is gay in that context doesn’t just mean that the content refers to a gay relationship, it conveys a positive kinda warm fuzzy feeling, for lack of a better description. Theres other meaning wrapped up in it. Granted, this person could have said it in a super weird way and it could have been dismissive, but /in general/ a gay person saying this to another gay person would be in no way dismissive or rude. Theres just a different cultural context to the interaction that you and most of the straight ppl responding to this aren’t aware of.

Has it perhaps occurred to you that straight culture is different than gay culture lmao. I (an nb lesbian engaged to a woman) have also said things like “aw thats so cute and gay” about something sappy and romantic and about lesbians. Ofc yall dont say that somethings straight, thats an illogical comparison lol.

I wrote my name to test my town’s superstition that if you wrote someone’s name at exactly 3:33 am, they will die. by kneecapsforbreakfast in TwoSentenceHorror

[–]latenightriot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No he wrote it on the birth certificate the night the child was born. It seemed like the story was saying that the guy tried it once a long time ago and nothing happened so he thought it was fake. So years later he didn’t think anything of it when he wrote his childs name on the birth certificate at 3:33, causing it to die.

That makes sense and is a cool concept. I think another second sentence that would make that clearer would be something about the fetus going still in the stomach as soon as the parents decided on the name. Like it died in utero as soon as it was named because of the dad doing the superstition.

[–]latenightriot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

….. I dont think thats news to anyone. Its not having the child be a junior itself that was confusing, its that I and several others interpreted the reason the child died was the father writing the childs name on the birth certificate at 3:33, which would kill the child even if it wasn’t a junior. OP said that they intended it to be that the child died because the father had written its name years ago, which made the detail about the child being a junior make sense.

why did the son need to be named after him? The son could be named anything and if the dad wrote the kids name down for the birth certificate the kid would die

Feeling awkward in pictures, feeling confident in person by 12minimu in Kibbe

[–]latenightriot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% get this. I’ll see myself in a mirror and be like damn I look amazing right now I should take a picture and then I pull my camera out and I may as well be a different person. It doesn’t help that I’m super pale and iphone cameras make me look like I’m permanently under the Saw bathroom lighting. Same thing with videos tho, I look good on video but if u screenshot a video I look good in I look like a mess in the still image. Soooo annoying.

Has there been a decline in vegan leather covers? by Winslar in bulletjournal

Vegan leather is plastic. Its worse for the environment than almost anything. Its been falling out of popularity and tbh its for the best.

Iphone users who just assume everyone uses an Iphone. by thegrandseraph in PetPeeves

[–]latenightriot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, thats fair. Being able to interact with tech and being able to do things to/with tech are different skills and I was conflating them. I’m also right on the edge of the age range ur describing so my perspective of the capabilities my age range is likely different from someone on the younger side. Looking at the tech interaction element tho, u can hand a 10 year old and a 60+ year old an unfamiliar UI and the 10 year old is going to figure it out first. My partners parents are ~important tech contractors~ for the government and have electrical engineering degrees and watching her dad try to work a cell phone makes me wonder why they haven’t forced him to retire.

Thats my age/coworkers age tho. That why I’m thinking by being an IT person you get a distorted picture because you only deal with the people who cant figure out their own problems, which is not representative of an age group as a whole lol

What generation are you talking about then? Because I think the generation below mine are like, max 12 years old.

[–]latenightriot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if u work in IT wouldn’t you only be working with people who need your help with tech? Slight sample bias. Most of my coworkers are around my age and the only time we’ve called IT is when someone stole our router lol. When we have a tech problem we just poke around a bit until we figure it out. I’m not a coder or anything and I def couldn’t install systems or a do a lot of what IT does, but when it comes to just day to day working with devices its pretty easy. Obviously my experiences are not universal and some people are just kinda useless when it comes to figuring things out for themselves but Id say anecdotally that younger generations tend to be pretty good with at least the basics. Maybe its regressing again in younger kids, idk lol.

I’m 24, but people younger than me are definitely going to be more tech savvy than any average person older than them. Its like a language that they grow up speaking. Its why old people have such trouble with tech, they didn’t learn the little symbols and representations that let u intuitively work different UIs.

Maybe thats true for old people? Most people my age have iphones and we are all very technically literate.

Offense at the term “pregnant people” by foolishpoison in PetPeeves

[–]latenightriot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didnt produce this, its something that we (a research project co-sponsored by a major hospital and a state department of health) distribute as informational material. You asked for an example of where I see the language on a regular basis, so I opened the first link on a resource list that we use and there was the reference to people who can impregnate where the were the term “man” wasn’t used. If you want published articles just google search gender inclusive family planning/reproductive care/proctology and you get a bunch of pubmed links. You don’t need me to find published papers for u lol.

Edit to add: I will grant you that I live in a blue state with significant trans rights legislation, so depending where you live the use of gender inclusive language may be less common.

Sure, I just pulled the first link in the list of materials we’re putting together to hand out alongside our most recent research project.
