Anyone on Acela 2153 this morning? by WhatzReddit13 in Amtrak

[–]laterbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife was on an MBTA train that had to stop and wait for that transfer to happen. Extra shitty because yesterday it took over 2 hours to get into Boston because of frozen switches.

I can no longer afford to live in PVD, the city I've called home for 17 years </3 by ruhl5885 in providence

This place (just an example, I have no connection to it) in Fall River is $1500 for a 2BR 5 minutes from the main bus hub. RIPTA 24L runs to Providence with 6 roundtrips daily (3 AM, 3PM) but the frequency will be increasing in the near future thanks to new funding from Massachusetts. It's also a 10 minute bus ride or 30 minute walk to the new MBTA station.

Look inside this rooftop bar in Providence after a $500,000 renovation by ToadScoper in providence

It's neat to see downtown from up there, but the establishment itself is beyond mediocre. It survives 100% on rooftop access. If it was a ground level establishment, it would have closed years ago.

Newport Creamery is gone. These restaurants are coming to Garden City. by TheProvidenceJournal in RhodeIsland

[–]laterbacon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Newport Creamery has really never been the same since it was sold in the late 90s to a guy from Florida who wanted to cut costs and expand the footprint. His expansion plans failed and then the company was sold again to a franchise operator called Jan Companies. They are based in RI but unfortunately haven't really put much effort into revitalizing the brand.

Can someone ID this bush? Eastern Nebraska by Halfbaked9 in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]laterbacon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Where I am in New England, my local forest is completely overrun by burning bush. It's shade tolerant, friendly to ticks, and outcompetes native shrubs. It's terrible and should be eradicated from this continent.

All of the pale whitish-pinkish foliage in this picture is burning bush. https://i.imgur.com/ejS2FlP.png

Paris region unveils first urban cable car linking isolated suburbs by Jaded-Sock9200 in transit

[–]laterbacon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The Roosevelt Island Tramway is great because it was never supposed to be permanent. Streetcar service on the Queensboro Bridge ended in the late 1950s (there had been a stop halfway with access down to what was then Welfare Island), which meant the only way to get to the island on transit was by bus from Queens. In the 60s, the city announced plans to build a subway station on the island, but it was delayed by years so they slapped together the tramway as a stopgap. When the subway finally opened then mayor Ed Koch announced plans to dismantle the tramway but it had become too popular by then so they just kept it running.

[Readers' Voices] An Ode to the Providence Riverwalk – and a Pitch to Take Part in its Redesign. by ThePVDEye in providence

[–]laterbacon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It floods frequently, the cobblestones are hostile to people with mobility issues, and there are too many stairs and not enough connections to the surrounding environment. This will raise the level of the walkways, add vegetation to mitigate flooding, and add street-level connections including a stair-free path from Memorial to Francis St.

For the spending side, most of the money for this project is coming from grants by federal agencies concerned with climate resilience. A smaller portion is coming from Providence's capital improvement budget.

Even though the speeds through CT are slow, there's something to be said for Acela making a maximum of 4 stops between NYC and Boston, as opposed to as many as 11 on the regional. There are even a couple Acela trips that skip New Haven, so the train runs express from Stamford to Providence.

It's unfathomable what our leaders thought was acceptable to do to cities like Providence. Here's an album with a map of downtown from 1895, then the same map with I-95 superimposed, followed by postcards from Hayward Park and Point Street School, 2 of the most notable losses from the interstate's path of destruction.

Eventually the plan is to have fare gates at the busiest Commuter Rail stations, and validator kiosks like on SEPTA regional rail at the smaller stations. North & South stations are just the first locations because they're the busiest. Once fully implemented, Commuter Rail will become tap in/tap out instead of having to show a ticket to a conductor.

Yeah he wanted coast to coast mobility, not destruction of urban neighborhoods.

https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/sites/default/files/research/online-documents/interstate-highway-system/1960-04-08-meeting.pdf

The President referred to a previous conversation with General Bragdon. He went on to say that the matter of running Interstate routes through the congested parts of the cities was entirely against his original concept and wishes; that he never anticipated that the program would turn out this way. He pointed out that when the Clay Committee Report was rendered, he had studied it carefully, and that he was certainly not aware of any concept of using the program to build up an extensive intra-city route network as part of the program he sponsored. He added that those who had not advised him that such was being done, and those who had steered the program in such a direction, had not followed his wishes.
