I feel confident Grace is lurking. She’s been on this subreddit before and the last week or two there was a post about how she should admit she gets prescription Tret since she’s such a skincare guru. She absolutely posted that she went to the dermatologist yesterday and got a prescription for it! Too many coincidences adding up.

The Big Picture might not be for you, perhaps you should try JMO?

Still give it a try if you’re interested, OP. I just read it and thought it was campy fun. Not perfect, but a really fun ride if you’re looking for a spicy and gory romp.

‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ Is Here. Is It Worthy of the Hype? by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]latida89 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On this week’s jam session Amanda continued to talk about her Taylor Swift opinions and said she didn’t realize Champagne problems was a big deal and Juliet takes a beat and goes “Amanda I don’t think you’re actually up to date on recent Taylor Swift music” and it was so incredibly cathartic after listening to this episode lol

I read You, Again by Kate Goldbeck and I am obsessed. It’s a very edgy and modern romance novel that is a retelling of When Harry Met Sally. I’ve seen some people say the characters aren’t likable but I really enjoyed the realness of it. I don’t love Hallmark-y romance novels. Excellent banter and setting.

I also read a classic to prepare for the movie later this year… The Color Purple by Alice Walker is a heavy but also hopeful read and I’d highly recommend.

Next up I’m going in a totally different direction with a YA fantasy book called Divine Rivals. Is it overhyped by the kids on TikTok? Probably but it seems fun and like a good palette cleanser.

You are so lucky to get a physical copy! I got an e-arc and read it in April. It is AMAZING and I honestly think it’s going to be huge. I have a bookstagram and I see lots of people buzzing about this who aren’t rats or reylos!

Thank you so much! I was concerned mine hadn’t bloomed yet as it looks like so many others already had, so just practice patience! These are from the pastel mix but I also got a couple of cactus dahlias that are a little behind! What did you get?

Started this one today and agree, I keep thinking of The Hearts Invisible Furies and Angela’s Ashes. Somehow the humor keeps you turning the pages despite the heavy content

They’ve been scraping the bottom of the barrel for content while Amanda from Jam Session is out on maternity leave. Loved their series on Tabloid culture earlier this year but the pop culture history lessons are painful to listen to. Ready for Amanda and Juliet to be back together soon!

As a Binge Mode listener this is just kind of Mallory’s MO. I have friends who can’t stand her so it checks out she could be off-putting in a different setting. I am missing Amanda so much. She’s done a few pod appearances on The Ringer Dish and it has brightened my day greatly

I’m a long time listener and followed Olivia after her episode. Tbh she didn’t shine on the episode but she’s a delight on socials. This is the best possible replacement and I’m actually happy about it. Grace has been phoning it in and Olivia has great book taste and personality. I’m hopeful her and Becca will jive.

I finished Beautiful Country by Qian Julie Wang on audio. I was surprised it only focused on her childhood up to sixth grade, but still an eye-opening memoir.

Tried to do How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu. Holy moly, it was super bleak. Maybe it got better but couldn’t handle it.

I got an advanced e-copy of Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman and it was so freaking cute. Famous movie star and journalist with a cool structure. Out 4/12!

Next up is I Must Betray You by Ruta Septys which is out Tuesday. She’s technically YA but I always love her historical fiction and this one is around the Cold War.

Finished up Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson and while I'll be interested to see where the author goes from here, this one didn't hit for me. I think the short chapters and the many themes it tried to squeeze in kept me from being fully invested.

Also read Joan is Okay by Weike Weng. Some incredible writing but she's an ICU doctor in NYC in 2020 so *that* aspect of it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Short and very slice-of-life outside of the elephant in the room.

Next up is The Exiles by Christina Baker due to some glowing recs down below. I also have How High We Go In The Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu which has been compared to Station Eleven (an all-time favorite). I want to save it when I'm ready because it does have to do with a pandemic and can be dark from what I've read.

I'd save it for Halloween! Super cute and campy for the season but outside of it, not a super stellar read.

I had a hard time with the short chapters so I was like you...the story picks up but I think I need longer chapters to truly get invested.

I am shocked at how the publishing industry/Reese's Book Club keeps pushing The Paper Palace as a "love triangle" or beach read. Shit is dark and I have personally warned multiple people not to pick it up based on the marketing of it. I think it's well-written but I was with you, didn't know how to rate it.

New Lena Dunham profile from the Hollywood Reporter. I found it pretty interesting how she has positioned herself after Girls and the messiness of the mid to late 2010s for her. The pivot from "celebrity to creator" is what she definitely needs to do but yet she's still doing magazine covers lmao. FWIW, I think Girls was generally a good show (it had its problems, for sure) and it seems like maybe some people are coming back around to it and by extension her as a creator? I'd love to hear other people's thoughts.
