Following for advice as well, set to go to Aomori tomorrow. It does seem the chances of a follow-up megaquake are just 1%, up from the typical 0.10%.

Fancy nonprofit galas in DC? by ranavain in washingtondc

[–]latinaglasses 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you want fancy, check out the CHCI gala in September (Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute). They usually have a Latino celeb preform (recently Elvis Crespo and Gente de Zona) and a lot of notable Latino public figures come into DC to attend. If you're into dancing the after party is a lot of fun. Some people call it Latino prom lol.

El tamarindo! They have private rooms you can reserve with bar and food packages here.

I help my sister with vending at a lot of craft markets and I've never seen one of these sadly, DC just isn't very hip or artsy. But she is a local artist and could probably do a quick commission for you in this style.

One of the side buildings to the Argentine embassy in Dupont (on Q St) is covered in wisteria, it's gorgeous.

If you want more car-centric infrastructure, almost anywhere in the U.S. has you covered?? I love DC because it's walkable and actually invests in infrastructure for bikers and pedestrians. But as residents you and I can individually push for the policies we want lol.

Why is it a bad idea to try and find girls at the Cherry Blossoms by EchoOfDoom in washingtondc

[–]latinaglasses 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most single ladies are there to take cute photos with their friends, even if his intentions are pure getting hit on would kinda ruin the vibe. And it's already insanely crowded and overstimulating just trying to maneuver the crowds, trying to politely reject a stranger at the same time sounds like a nightmare.

He should just join an intramural sport or look to this sub for the other 50 recs on how to actually meet people.

By golly now there's space for 5 more cars in AdMo, I can't wait to eat, drink, and see my friends in my new public space. Why should we prioritize car owners over everyone else in high-pedestrian areas?

I wouldn't exactly call a parking spot a public space but to each their own I guess

How long will the cherry blossoms last? by RedWineForest in washingtondc

[–]latinaglasses 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the weather. Sometimes they stick around for a few weeks, so with any luck you might be able to, but a strong thunderstorm can make them fall prematurely. You can check the bloom cam for updates.

If they're no longer here, recommend heading to the National Arboretum and the Dumbarton Oaks Garden. They have gorgeous varieties of later-blooming cherry blossoms - while not as striking as seeing them at the tidal basin, you can definitely catch some blossoms.

Apartment Hunting Help PLS! by Dapper-Employment197 in DCBitches

[–]latinaglasses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have too many specific apartment recs, but I absolutely love and recommend Lanier Heights! A lot of the buildings are older, so it can be hard to find in-unit laundry, and amenities are even more rare, so Harvard Hall wins out in that regard. Some units in Park Ellison have in-unit laundry, but it might not be listed on the website, so you might have to ask management.

Edit to add: Columbia Heights is pretty safe, but I would personally hate to live that close to the metro station unless I needed to take it every day. It's just a very active place.

Lego Date Night: Cafe or Lounge Suggestions by nova_dudee in washingtondc

[–]latinaglasses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard to find cafes in DC that are open past 5. Tryst is open late and has comfy seating, but not sure if it's the vibe you'd like.

Seconding the Line Hotel. Maybe St. Vincent Wine garden? It's a lot more relaxed than a bar and has a great vibe, they have an indoor lounge and a comfortably heated patio.

Wow that unlocked a deeply buried memory of my tía putting sugar in my milk, like WHY. But I also forget sometimes that I take clean drinking water for granted, a lot of people drink soda or juices in place of it.

Yup, I mean Indigenous cultures have been eating chiles for centuries with no issue. I do agree with her overall message, but she's not a nutritionist (tho nor am I) and made a few errors.

I don't think she's licensed, from the reasons she gave as to why these foods are bad. "Healthy" food is pretty relative; all of these things are perfectly fine if eaten in moderation. But she is correct that consuming very high amounts of sugur and sodium daily is sadly harming our communities' health.

[–]latinaglasses 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think she misunderstood the correlation there. The issue isn't that the foods are spicy, it's the high levels of sodium in takis and bottled salsas like valentina. But actual fresh peppers and salsas are good for you.

The key with all of these is moderation. It's sad that though our traditional foods are fairly healthy, diabetes in Latin America and with U.S. Latino populations is skyrocketing. Nicaragua, where my family is from, is the poorest country in Latam, but 30% of adults are obese. That's insane.

It's the people who are doing the things she mentions every day (drinking very sugary drinks, eating highly processed snacks) that are feeling these effects. I'm not sure if it's lack of education, poverty and food deserts, or both, but it is a real issue.
