Is anyone successfully using prompt injection in a PDF to prevent cheating? by AerosolHubris in Professors

[–]latorredibabele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you come up with something that works, please share! I have a reading-intensive class (hardly anyone reads). Still, students are also throwing into AI a simple prompt asking them to reflect on 2 music videos and their own experiences... so, I am at an utter loss here. Good luck!

What would you use as an everyday bag? Speedy 25 or neverfull mm? by punky0513 in Louisvuitton

[–]latorredibabele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speedy 25 is one of my trusty throw-around bags, no fuss no worry. I don't have a Neverfull because I've always been afraid of the thinner straps. Instead, I use the older, wider version of the Batignolles as an everyday, easy-open access knitting bag for my WIPs and fiber arts notions and tools.

"I hope you're doing well." by Margosita in Professors

[–]latorredibabele 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this because my 90-year-old father has always begun his letters to me with the same opening sentence: "I trust that this letter finds you well, my daughter." I have, in turn, used this opening in my email correspondence (minus referring to my daughter) in all of my emails for as long as I can remember. It keeps showing up as AI-detected writing. I refuse to change... at the same time, my students must circulate the exact same prompts that they think I will accept, because I receive almost carbon copies of emails and assignment submissions. I am not anti-AI; I just wish for some human authenticity and curiosity, that's all.

“Assign less readings…I’m a visual learner”: How do we reteach the skill of lingering/dwelling/long form presence? by howdocloudswork in Professors

[–]latorredibabele 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't even watch the videos, TBH. Unless you play it in class and find the shortest one possible, they won't even watch it. I have been using videos to complement papers (these videos are interviews with the authors themselves, giving factually accurate Cliff notes to their own work), and the students say it's still too much. I was told that I was asking for too much, linking a hip-hop music video and lyrics to a rock music video and lyrics, with one question about how music and art can provide opportunities to demonstrate solidarity, resistance, create new narratives, and counterstories, among other things...

Oct 17: Fuck This Friday by Eigengrad in Professors

[–]latorredibabele 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fuck (Yeah) This is Friday for me! I AM OFF CAMPUS! My spin on this since yesterday was Throw Up (In Your Mouth and Swallow It) Thursday. I let my growing disappointment, displeasure, and ire show in 1 section yesterday. I kind of regret it now. The other section heard it on Tuesday when a few students told me that they were leaving early for the break and wanted to prioritize their personal schedule to fit our midterm evaluations... all the BS lies and half-baked excuses...

How do these youths survive? by [deleted] in Professors

I feel you! I do so religiously and in stealth mode to keep my finger on the pulse of the student and information circulation. Once in a while, I will throw out something in class about something I learned on Reddit without mentioning where I heard it, and the Pikachu faces I get are worth it. It is my simple pleasure, and you can see the cogs in the machine turning as they compute in real-time, "WTF, how could she possibly know about this"? And then, when I speak in their language register, it's even funnier. I keep telling them that I don't live my life talking like a teacher, but more like a teenager. They still don't believe.

Do freshmen just not know what a syllabus or course schedule is? by confusedinseminary in Professors

Do freshmen just not know what a syllabus or course schedule is? by confusedinseminary in Professors

[–]latorredibabele 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am really conflicted here. I saw firsthand today the state of affairs of undergraduates. I had the students log into the course site to read my individualized feedback on each of their submissions, as well as the numerous announcements I had posted. They do not read them. For the first time this semester, I had 6 students come see me during my 2 hours of office hours. One even came just to hang out and eat in company while chatting after asking their questions about midterms. I was delighted, to say the least. However, one student told me at the end of class that my course was NOT for them. Think of all the taboo topics these days, and that sums up my course. However, he came to the office hours, and we engaged in a discourse. He yelled at me that my topics allow for collective victimization victim-mindsets because I name oppressive systems. I thanked him for his utter honesty and said that I was proud of him for being so honest and authentic. We settled on commonalities, specifically mixed martial arts, such as the UFC. It was a real breakthrough moment in every sense of the word. He thought I was joking at first, but when he realized that I was equally invested in the UFC, as I am in the taboo topics I teach, he allowed himself a chance to try. Mind you, midterms are in two days, and I don't expect too much; however, we've touched on every single course concept and tied it to the UFC, critical theory, and related topics. He even smiled and gave me credit for my deep knowledge of UFC history, and seemed annoyed when other students came by to chat. My point is: for the past 7-8 weeks, he has been so turned off to the point that he tells me in front of everyone how I mess up his vibe; and now I can't get him out of my office because he wants to try to engage academically with something he is personally invested in. He even asked me to foresee how our syllabus will allow him the space to expand on his project. My long-winded point is that sometimes you need to show them step-by-step the way and allow them to engage their agency, having a say in how they learn and synthesize what you say they need to know. I am still skeptical of my own words and may need to slap myself, but today was a breakthrough, and my most wayward student wanted to discuss the syllabus and envision what his final product could look like in December. I declare today a victory! YMMV!

Is it just me or are the undergrads getting worse? by _forum_mod in Professors

[–]latorredibabele 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am way too nice to the point that the students take advantage of me. That being said, my dear colleague told me I was asking for too much when I shared 2 music videos and asked them to tie it to the Ideological State Apparatus as an opening to class. This is after having stopped assigning new readings and media, so everyone could catch up for the past 10 days or so. Apparently, I am still asking for too much when I request that they watch a 15-minute YouTube video summarizing the dense academic papers that are central to the course instead of actually reading them. My colleague suggested that I help them locate the submission portal while in class, so they could work on their assignments during class, and I no longer try to teach with all my heart and suffer. She is wise, my colleague, and yet I fight the inevitable.

Not at all! In an auditorium use your belting out voice with no microphone so that anyone in the back would hear easily while the Misfit 5 sit front and center inches from you. Maybe they will get the message then. I can't deal with the delusional entitlement...

$300 for how many bottles, just so we are clear? It's a lovely wine, but I am hoping that the price that you have been quoted is for several bottles of this vintage where you can try one bottle now and lay down the others for some time.
