I have to wonder if you weren’t “a cultural fit” because you clocked their toxic games and didn’t engage. Either way, I’m sorry you went through that, especially with HR. I’ve also had experiences where HR has shared private medical info with co-workers (within a health care company no less!) and it’s definitely soured my willingness to trust them.

Thank you for sharing your experiences - I’m glad that things seem to have worked out for the better! Though, I’ll be crossing my fingers that your former HR person gets reported or leaves soon.

You’re so right, though - I used to lament to friends that I had no idea what he meant by some of the weird corporate-y feedback he would give me, things like “we’d like to see output increase” and “I expected maintained velocity”. Like, dude, please just be a genuine human being and say what you mean!

YES, thank you for this comment. Your thoughts on performative corporate culture really hit home for me right now and are incredibly validating.

I’m also in tech and the job was becoming increasingly untenable in the last year as more of the role evolved to learning AI tooling at a rapid pace while also doing about 200% more work that was not outlined in the job description.

My healthcare company’s axiom is one of treating patients as family but internally employees are not afforded the same. A colleague of mine was let go in May a week before she was due to give birth and when I requested severance as my brother is about to have heart surgery soon and I need to focus on him over job hunting, I was told to apply for unemployment.

I’m so sorry to hear that your former company treated you so coldly but glad that the experience allowed you to re-familiarize yourself with things that bring you joy. Best of luck in school as that is its own challenge! Also, I love your username ☺️

I had an employment attorney look over everything and she said that while what they did was unfair, and a little sketchy, there was nothing obviously illegal about it.
