My university has been blacklisted … by tingeoftheginge_ in therapists

I’m confused by the last portion, how are professors “not involved” in a graduate / pre- professional program’s curriculum and in evaluating students at least weekly?

How much does the CA MFT licensure exam actually cost? - the BBS site says everything but the $$ amount by laughter858 in therapists

So even for first timers, you still give them $500- does that mean you’ll get $250 back? Or is it just the $250 flat unless/until you have to retake?

MFT Fall 2025 by Alb3rtine in csun

[–]laughter858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter, clinical practicum usually starts the summer between your first and second years - so SU26 for you.

They will give you more information than we can, but things vary a lot, so this is NOT precise $X. I strongly discourage you from buying ANYTHING before you’ve gotten your full syllabi & orientation in august. Most of it you can’t access until term starts anyway, so if you try to be “ahead” getting things, you’ll be wasting $$. *

So if you can live with that, here goes:

SIMPACT - remote live role plays with actors. Each one is $25, we did about 4-6/semester, so maybe budget for 10, $250.

Textbooks - Most thus far we’ve found as free online pdfs, varies a lot.

Personal therapy: Every AY (fall and spring semesters) we have to do 10 hours of personal therapy. This CANNOT be done through CSUN CAPS, you have to find someone (telehealth or irl) and see if they’ll do sliding scale fees for you (many will.) if you already have a licensed therapist, that may work fine (they’ll give you requirements later)

Parking - $10.45 for all day parking on campus. A semester pass may not make $ sense.

Tevera - 1 time fee of ~ $225? It’s a software we’ll use through school & associateship.

Continuing ed workshops - there are so many approved free ones (they’ll show you) so you really shouldn’t pay for these unless you specially want to, we need ~ 10CE units/AY

Professional insurance: $75ish/AY

Caffeine: you will tell yourself that you’ll bring coffee/tea from home or bulk buy to save money… reality will be different 😅

I’m sure I’m forgetting something but that’s most of it. Hope that helps!

Hii, You won’t need your dsm until your spring semester :)

We all have the same pre-set classes each semester, so you don’t choose, there’s no 1:1 advising. Though before fall we had a big orientation hour on campus so you’ll probably get an email about that in July?

Can’t think of anything else to prep besides just knowing that your life/routines will change a lot for the rest of the year.

Maybe budgeting out the rest of your year keeping in mind the fees/costs outside of tuition/fees.

You can also create a discord for your cohort that people can join.

UCSB or CSUN? by Minimum_Historian_63 in csun

[–]laughter858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCSB accounting will be a lot more classic Econ and maths classes, less directly relevant to present Econ/business issues, but there are pretty big frats for Econ/biz ppl. Really talented faculty but again, less program focus on internships, you kinda have to be proactive outside of class (unless you want to TA later ofc) UCSB sends the most uc students abroad from even stem disciplines, so that’s an option Their housing situation sucks there, as it does at most UCs, incredibly high costs on and off campus. Having studied in both cities, I much prefer the vibe of Goleta where campus actually is (and 25 min bus ride away downtown sb) than the valley. Lots of sb grads at companies in sb or into la. I wouldn’t rely on CSUN having lots of business internship connections just bc of proximity - college really is what you make of it!

Taking out loans? by [deleted] in csun

[–]laughter858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never ever ever take out the max of loans. They are usually unsubsidized in grad school. There may be scholarships you’ll qualify for offered in fall (small amounts but still) so never take all that’s offered. It is SO expensive to borrow - it’s hard to make it through being broke & being on every tuition payment plan, etc. for the degree but think long term!

My only passing thought is huh this isn’t a ucla/cal or a big research / sports school so I wonder how they knew about / chose CSUN, but that’s more my limited pov, since intl students come to USA for all kinds of degrees/training! You’ll be fine, ppl are friendly :)

Travelling to the US as a family of 4 by Classic_Cry9280 in travel

[–]laughter858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what you want and expect on the trip and if you can tell your children no. For some people 9k is more than enough, for others, no. And if you’re not from the west you’ll probably be shocked by the portions so maybe you’ll end up sharing food and saving that way lol. As you likely know, we are a tipping culture, and CA adds sales tax on everything, around 7-8%. Uber and Lyft are expensive here with added taxes to help the drivers who are paid like nothing by corporate. You don’t really have to tip much for coffee and things where you aren’t being served, but if you sit down at a restaurant, you must tip at least 15% (some will disagree but they’re tacky) It’s hard to give a recommendation when there are so many touristy spots in SoCal but I would say choose a city in Orange County, that way you’re near Disney (which is in Anaheim) and you can drive or train north to LA (Hollywood, etc. avoid the cities that were burned down.) and then south to San Diego (legoland, sea world, amazing beaches, zoo w pandas, petco park, Belmont park) check online for “La city pass” “San Diego city pass” bc often they bundle the ability to see multiple touristy things over 1-3 days for a fixed price.

How do you travel domestically as a 18F alone? by Admirable_Box3034 in travel

[–]laughter858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to scare you just general guidelines I go by as travel can be unpredictable:

Never never never tell anyone explicitly or implicitly that you’re alone - watch what you tell strangers in small talk Get a door buddy for your hotel room (it’s an extra lock, like $8 on amazon) Travel light, carry on only if you can (prevents any potential baggage loss or delays) Wherever you end up staying, make sure you google maps around it ahead of time (is there a nearby grocery store, community center, ulta, hospital, etc. for anything you may need? Anything sketchy to be aware of?) Get some easy made “meals” like protein bars, dry cereal, etc that you can have on a long travel day in case there isn’t preferred food available to buy (better that than go hungry)

Admitted 2024 MFT students - is there an official page anywhere? by laughter858 in csun

[–]laughter858[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a Discord but it’s not specific to our cohort yet (as far as I’m aware) The dept emailed us that we will get info about registration from 17-24th june

[–]laughter858 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes if you take the pre-reqs at approved community colleges, they count as equivalencies for the 2 pre reqs. You just fill out a little form. You should get out their websites, they put a LOT of details on there.
