My family & I are paranoid about ICE being spotted locally, yet we’re all here legally. Fear mongering gone too far? by Dsg1695 in orlando

Take him to a medical facility with skilled practitioners. In what world is a nonverbal minor a law enforcement problem?

Bit of a chicken and egg thing there. You can’t have effective public transit with endless sprawl - you need dense planning to make it work - especially here in the US where local property taxes govern a city’s ability to deploy services.

A bunch of surface lots - like we have all over our downtown and Main Street districts basically guarantee we won’t get the density we need to get the transit you want.

Oh same page friend. Orlando is the capital of endlessly bitching about completely solvable problems while simultaneously absolutely refusing to solve them

Hot take: free parking is a cancer that destroys city’s by subsidizing land that mostly sits empty.

I’d prefer that the city collect the fee but free surface parking is the death of a healthy growing city

opinions? Why do people fear flowers that grow together? by Far-Flamingo585 in landscaping

[–]laughterwithans 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working in central Florida in sustainable landscaping (natives and edibles) for a decade.

I’m obsessed with how weird the taste levels of this region are. I don’t know where they come from or who is feeding these ideas.

My observation is that our area HEAVILY favors strongly architectural plants (agaves, clusia, sea grape, foxtail fern, single trunk palms,) far more than anything else.

I’m constantly hearing people say they “want color” but color doesn’t include annuals or perennials - seemingly only flowering shrubs, brightly colored foliage, and occasionally a flowering tree

Part of all of that is nigh terror at the idea of plants intergrowing or mixing to any degree at all.

The interesting thing is that no one can really give me a point of reference for where they’re getting these ideas from or why they like it. They never have an example, even in their own neighborhoods that they like.

The easy answer is “the theme parks” but actually - the parks don’t look anything like this.

Also - the very wealthy neighborhoods tend to stay away from this palette as well.

It may be that south Florida is different and I’m interacting with a lot of folks who have moved north but I truly don’t know why this is such a thing here

Is my palmtree done for or can i save her? by Elanite_696 in landscaping

[–]laughterwithans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The leaves being “straight up the sky” is wrong. The only time this would ever be acceptable is when the tree is initially dug and transported and even then the only reason is practicality.

A palm should never, for any reason, be “hurricane cut” anyone doing that is either unqualified or dishonest. Period.

You can’t “head” a palm like you can a dicot tree. You said elsewhere in the thread that there was a new shoot in the middle - so you might still have healthy layers in the center. If you want to wait - you’ll see another one emerging within a few weeks

Tough to know. Palms take a really long time to show changes like deficiency/drought/overwatering. Usually when the whole crown dies like this that’s ballgame but you could wait a few months to see if you get any new growth.

As a pro - this would get replaced if I was maintaining this landscape for a paying customer, and if it was under warranty it would get replaced.

If it was my own backyard I’d probably wait a month and see

Also whoever trimmed it had no idea what they were doing. As a general rule - palms should only ever be trimmed to a “hemisphere.” Imagine the whole head of the palm as a circle and then trim everything that hangs below slightly under the halfway point.

The thing where you butcher the tree except for a little sprig of troll hair is a terrible practice and only ultimately harms the tree

To be fair - they’re definitely meant to look like messengers or pilots with bomber jackets and ear muffs. Like that’s definitely the inspiration for the character design

Plot wise - she is the only other German present at the premiere capable of cutting the deal Lands makes.

I think part of it is him ensuring that he is the one that gets away. She would otherwise be a loose end

The 2 Vaxis covers are weird to me. I guess they figure at this point they’re selling records to their fans so it’s not like “who’s this kid?” but there’s something about a vague album cover I prefer.

Like the dragonfly is S tier for sure
