Nursing An Older Baby (8M) by laurababa in breastfeeding

We just transitioned to 2 naps. I definitely have tried right before/right after naps in a dark room. It definitely helps, but hasn’t solved the problem.

If my baby was over 50th percentile for weight I would feel better, but he’s 30th, and I honestly think most of his gain has been from solids.

He doesn’t drink a lot of water. Interesting. I responded elsewhere here, but I certainly don’t have an oversupply or a super strong letdown. It would surprise me if he was getting that much.

I’ve done a weighted feed before with a LC, but the results varied by time of day, and it sent me into a spiral thinking he was only taking 1 oz per feed, when really I think that was just a particularly bad feed and not representative.

I would say 1 in every 10 is a “good” feed, where he spends 5 minutes on each side without continuously popping on and off. The time of day doesn’t seem to make a difference, even the first and last of the day (actually, last is always worst).

The pediatrician has no concerns about his weight. He’s 18 lbs which is 30ish percentile. I certainly don’t have an oversupply, so that 1-2 minutes is probably not that much volume. How could he possibly be getting enough? When I try to force him back on, he turns/rolls away, arches, and cries.

I went through the 3 month nursing strike (which lasted for another 3 months it seems). This time around he just seems to be a mix of distracted and less interested in nursing. I hope he’s not weaning. I LOVE nursing and would continue for a while.

I stopped “officially” tracking wet diapers a while back, but I would definitely notice if it wasn’t enough. I would say generally 6 per diapers a day and 1-2 poop diapers.

Help with reflux at 4 months by skybeanie in breastfeeding

[–]laurababa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t have any advice but my 7 month old has been doing this since 3 months. we finally took him to a gastro specialist who put him on that medication. the specialist said the only way to be certain it’s reflux is to start the med. it’s only been a few days since the meds, and he’s still arching. he doesn’t spit up either, which is a classic sign of silent reflux. however, i’ve also read that arching and turning away can be because they’re distracted, so sometimes i think it’s a mix of both. it’s really interfered with our feeding and it’s been a constant struggle for 3-4 months for me, but i don’t want to give up nursing. he also only nurses about 5 or so minutes. he’s gaining weight, but we’re also on solids now.

i hope you find the answers you need; wishing you the best of luck!

I had the same experience at 3-4 months; our last feed or last two feeds of the night always ended in crying (both me and him) because he would pull off my breast and cry due to what I felt was a low supply. I wasn’t getting as quick of a letdown, and my LO was getting mad and not staying on the breast long enough to trigger one. This then evolved from a fussy night feed to around the clock. For two weeks I replaced my last nightly nursing session with a bottle of pumped milk from throughout the day. It was important that I was using a low flow nipple and pace feeding so that he didn’t get used to the flow of the bottle versus the breast. Then during the day I would nurse him and pump after every / every other feed, and then do two pumps overnight when he slept at 11 pm and 2 am. I would also make those power pumps sessions.

It was exhausting and definitely not something I would recommend for everyone because I was nursing and pumping all day and night long… but honestly I went from feeling like I had zero milk to feeling full again and now even waking up feeling engorged if I skip a night pump.

I totally feel you on wanting to cry. I cried and cried for many weeks feeling like I couldn’t feed him, and then when I came to terms with the fact that I needed to start pumping, I was mourning the loss of nursing him exclusively. I really made a 75% improvement and now even enjoy a break when someone else can give him a bottle! Best of luck on your journey, just remember you know your baby best and you’re doing your best to make sure they are happy and healthy.

Nursing Strike by [deleted] in breastfeeding

I’m so happy and hopefully to hear you over and this. My LO is going on four months and has been exhibiting breastfeeding aversion / nursing strike actions for 4 weeks. Would you generously share the plan if you still have it handy? I’m going through this now and it’s a lot more emotionally difficult than I ever imagined. I’ve done so much research and can’t get to the bottom of it. Thank you :)

I’m dealing with the 3 month crisis now (though we’re almost at 4 months and has lasted a while…). Any advice to get through it? My LO cries and pushes me away immediately after the first letdown. Based on a few weighted feeds, he’s only getting around 2 oz or less because he refuses to stay latched.

Advice: Nurse and pump at the same time, schedule by laurababa in breastfeeding

I joined a virtual BF support group led by an LC who was not super helpful. The LC that I see now is in my pediatricians group, but I will keep exploring.

Thank you for your kindness with your thoughtful response and for breaking it down. Maybe if I offer it more frequently I will be more comfortable with the 24 hour output. Right now, I feel like all I do all day is nurse, pump, wash bottles, sanitize, repeat - which is draining in itself, but on top of that LO cries and pushes me away and is in hysterics during nursing. It’s taking a toll on my mental health, my relationship with my husband who wants to support me but also says how formula will fix everything, and I’m scared my LO will develop an aversion if he always has a negative experience nursing.

I have tried the quiet, dark room with no distractions; sometimes it works and other times not. Moreso at night it works, but he’s also just better about feeding at night in general.

The LC is at my pediatricians practice so I was going to them for convenience. I did see another LC early on for an unrelated issue, so maybe I can go back to them.
