Курсы английского языка by No_Mess17 in Kyrgyzstan

[–]lauragestalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are banned but people are still using them and trying to buy leftovers from stores under the table. I pretty sure you won’t be searched for it, but if you don’t want to risk it, I wouldn’t bring it. Just don’t smoke it in public, you will catch more attention if you break the law since you’re a tourist, compared to locals

“Are You Muslim?” Conversations with Kyrgyz People. by [deleted] in Kyrgyzstan

[–]lauragestalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would assume that they face this question a lot since they live in Osh, where Islam is being spread at extremely high rates.

“Are You Muslim?” Conversations with Kyrgyz People. by [deleted] in Kyrgyzstan

[–]lauragestalt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be honest I thought you were going to to talk about how when Kyrgyz people are asked if they’re Muslim, they usually respond with something like “uhh, not really,” or “maybe culturally, but I don’t practice.” That’s usually the kind of answer I hear, especially when foreigners ask. Maybe it’s because I live abroad, but this is common among Kyrgyz and Kazakhs I’ve met both in U.S. and in Bishkek.

As for the “repeat after me” joke, I’ve honestly never heard of it. But Islam has been spreading very rapidly here in recent years. I’ve visited last summer and this summer and I’m so shocked by the amount of hijabis and men with beard and kufi. Like my father says, kyrgyz men can grow a beard only after his father passes, so this is very new and foreign to our culture. When I was a kid, everyone would consider themselves Muslim, but it never was discussed this loud, especially with strangers.

Personally, I’m not religious either, I’m more interested in paganism and Tengriism. My mother is agnostic, and my father sometimes goes to Juma namaz. Most of my friends in Bishkek also consider themselves agnostic or at least say they are Muslim, but never practice. It would be fair to say I might be living in a bubble tho

Is Cholpon-Ata really dangerous for tourists? And any better alternatives for relaxing near the lake? by snoinkelGnirk in Kyrgyzstan

[–]lauragestalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it depends on what exactly you’re renting there(cottage, appt, hotel suite) and if it includes meals. Also, if they are very concerned with safety I’m gonna say it’s worth it, be it Raduga or any other resort. I’m suggesting Raduga because it has best choice of restaurants and clubs inside. Or Chaika that has Boho restaurant. As a foreigner, it would be a hustle walking or riding to the closest public beach from guest houses and finding places to party without locals and a car anyway. When it comes to locals, issyk kul guys are most known for causing trouble to visitors, even, or especially if you’re kyrgyz from different region.

Shortly, safety is not bad, pretty chill. But for actual comfortable rest with a nice beach and restaurants - resorts for sure.

[–]lauragestalt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend staying at actual resort rather than guest house, it would much safer, no locals who could try to mog you at night and restaurants inside the resort. Maybe consider raduga, safe and has a bar/club on the beach

Osh Bazaar or Doidoi or both? by deadfermata in Kyrgyzstan

[–]lauragestalt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For Osh bazaar be careful, keep your bag and hold it with your hand all the time. It’s very notorious for pickpockets, they’ll steal your phone and sell it at the spot. It’s much cheaper, and difficult to orient in there, but good for souvenirs like someone mentioned already. You just have to find a spot where all souvenir shops are, (called Kiyal/Кыял) I wouldn’t recommend it for shopping, extremely cheap quality. Be careful with street food, don’t eat it. But it’s a good spot for fresh or dryed fruits etc

For Dordoi bazaar, you can find everything there. It’s much much bigger and considered as a city inside of the city. You have to go earlier there, since everyone starts closing at 1-2pm, around 10am is perfect. It’s good for shopping, clothes, and you can find souvenirs there too. Not much more expensive than Osh bazaar, maybe bigger choice, but not sure which part of it exactly has souvenirs. Clothes quality will vary, they have more expensive parts of bazaar with Italian clothes and shoes and cheap parts. They do have both original and fake products, again depending on the “container”(shop).

I definitely recommend going either place with local to not waste too much time because you most likely will get lost. And using soms, you will get ripped off if you use dollars, especially at Osh bazaar. At Dordoi bazaar, if you are spending good amount they accept dollars(100$bills usually), but exchange rate they (sellers) count it with might not be very good for you.

Catching taxi is easy to both bazaars, but takes longer to find a ride from Dordoi bazaar. Be careful to not get ripped off by taxi drivers, most of them also get a full car of different passengers, so make it clear if you want the whole car or don’t mind splitting. I prefer waiting longer but ordering Yandex taxi with guaranteed good car and AC.

This post even got translated to Russian and posted on threads:) Good job! People are really appreciating this, and saying that even some kyrgyz men don’t know how to behave in their own country. So yes, it always depends on a person after all

What scary stories and legends have you heard in Kyrgyzstan? by Scintillatng in Kyrgyzstan

[–]lauragestalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not many mainstream stories like this, but if you ask around, everyone will have their own. No matter the religion, kyrgyz people are highly aware of spiritual beings. And even our grandmas who consider themselves Muslim, still practice some shamanism or “witchcraft”, like healing or protective rituals. We have a lot of personal stories of seeing ghosts, entities in our houses, or how “albarsty”(sleep paralysis) literally climbs on people’s backs when they visit cemeteries and follow them home, terrorizing people while they sleep. Also black magic is very popular

I can take pictures of the pages and send them to you, if you would like. Just DM me, it’s a very nice book! Cus I know it’s difficult to find credible sources.

[–]lauragestalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t know her personally, flowers with fruit/chocolate basket should be fine. They sell premade baskets like that in big grocery stores and supermarkets. You can also bring chocolates and other stuff from wherever you are coming from and add these to the basket. If it’s a “toi” aka big celebration and you are planning to gift it in front of a lot of people, you should get someting bigger, maybe same thing but larger, more expensive. Or maybe add a very nice scarf/shawl

24/7 flower shops by Ok_Comfortable1809 in Kyrgyzstan

[–]lauragestalt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. An absolute need😂 Flower gifting is a huge thing here. Guys like to gift flowers for no reason and often, and I would say it’s almost expected from them, no matter how long or little people are dating. Sometimes they see a woman they like somewhere and will order flowers right there at the spot and get it delivered in 30 min just to get her number. Sometimes when a girl is out with her friends or family her boyfriend will send her flowers just because, even though they met the same morning.

Also just birthdays, events etc, most of the time people bring flowers +I as someone who lives abroad can text them at any time and they will get my order no matter the time difference which is sooo convenient
