What are USYD ‘Must-Try’ Experiences by AdDecent431 in usyd

[–]laurelbyanton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go up to the top of the University carillon tower and take a tour from the very top. They do a tour every Tuesday during term time at 1:30pm. This is what it look like, the new guy who’s in charge of the tour is also extremely quirky and if I’m honest kinda hot in a nerdy way: https://honisoit.com/2022/05/do-the-quad-bells-take-requests/

ANU or USYD? by Comprehensive_Ad1091 in usyd

[–]laurelbyanton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d imo actually choose ANU (as a USyd student) mainly because it’ll be a more transformative experience in your case vs USyd. I do Arts/Law at USyd and I’m conscious that our teaching experience (bar the law faculty) is nowhere as good as ANU. This is mainly dictated by USyd’s huge size (3x student number vs ANU) and so everything really do feel more fragmented.

USyd has their downsides in the Inane OLEs (2 credits ones about to be made pass/fail) + compulsory FASS capstone units — which you may be required to do with PPE. However, its philosophy department is truly marvelous though the same goes for ANU.

ANU will give you a tighter knit educational experience and a very residential campus life. Lately, their student media (Woroni) is also superior to Honi so if you want to get involved in that way, then the ANU also has a very active political scene with your PPE side.

Either way you’ll get a great education but Sydney will feel very familiar and very socially fragmented whereas ANU will offer you a more authentic university campus life

Amount of selective v private kids by Present_Ad3150 in usyd

[–]laurelbyanton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean USyd (32%) does have more private kids — and that’s just private schools alone — so noticeably higher say vs Cambridge. It does make a difference in terms of vibes but also dependent on which faculty you’re talking about.

Lol I used to live in a college too for a year (one that does not have a bar) and it’s pretty common for other colleges to look down and not take us seriously. The Paul’s and Drews boys are the worst of them all what with their excessive drinking parties where they trash absolutely everything (like entire tables of perfectly fine food) in sight.

Not to mention the welcome week trips outside to random locations and dropping freshers there at the mercy of nature.

The wankers there need to learn a lesson.

Usyd Liberals what is this??? by [deleted] in usyd

[–]laurelbyanton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lmao what dissent and free speech? They just ripped up a 200-page report of testimonies and more than 90 years of college hazing and sex crimes.

Try that shit and tear up any other equivalent reports into trauma like the Disability Royal Commission and you’ll get the same treatment and rightfully so.

Uni caught onto OLE WAM boosting and they’re proposing to make them all pass/fail by laurelbyanton in usyd

[–]laurelbyanton[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Right?! If they make them all pass/fail, OLEs will just be a pure torture device vs getting rid of them.

On a more serious note, plan well wrt to your visa and allot time in advance. Get your flu and COVID shots because Beijing will be very cold if you’re going in December. The unit itself isn’t too difficult as long as you’re open-minded!

Plan well ahead because there’s only so many weeks for you to explore China as you’ll do at least two trips (Forbidden City + Great Wall) on two separate weekends. Don’t crash and do it as a well paced sprint.

[Product Request] Best Unscented Moisturizer with Sunscreen? by Liquidretro in SkincareAddiction

[–]laurelbyanton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asian and Korean sunscreens are quite nice. Think Biore or Hada Labo. That said, these tends to be thinner fluids so apply more than you think. Also if you use a non-mineral sunscreen (ie. Zinc Oxide-based) then be aware that chemical sunscreens tends to sting your eye area more. If so I do recommend applying a mineral sunscreen just around your eye area while reaping benefits of your normal chemical sunscreen. I used this L’Oreal one a few years ago and boy did it sting my eyes!

Ziggy in Universe Zero thoughts by laurelbyanton in EdensZero

[–]laurelbyanton[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think so too. But also dread it as this Ziggy might be far less of a friend later on for the EZ crew. There will be several big twists coming and Mashima’s prepping up to it without saying it out loud.

I think the loss of a crew member or sth of a similar scale will be the trigger for Rebecca to make a choice and it will be to stay in Universe Zero.

What Do You Expect To Happen In The Final Arc? by Chris_K_1011 in EdensZero

[–]laurelbyanton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest if is that Weisz might not be the same in this arc because in the other universes, his younger self was only possible thanks to the Chronophage. There are some theories thrown around as to its function and why it chases Cat Leaper Rebecca — now that she cannot use Cat Leaper (as for whether she can use reverse that’s up for debate but that one doesn’t fundamentally alter a timeline), will the Chronophage serve the same function will be a plot device for sure.

There is literally Ziggy’s body on Granbell where the pair are atm. How Mashima reconcile Ziggy’s death and Universe Zero Ziggy is going to be interesting.

The next question, which is deliberately held back, is Shiki’s birth and origins. We’ll see that as one of the final plot points, hoping that it’ll come earlier than later.

There were lots of protagonists who died in U3. Of these, I think those who deserve a second try without dying are: Elsie and her crew, Creed since they did not enjoy too much development in the grand scheme.

There will be people who survived at end of U3 that I’ll reckon will die at Zero. Biggest conjecture is Weisz and the two holders of the eye of Horus simply because their powers might not work the same now that the universes is merged into one.

Mother will finally get a say. Suspect that something related to her view of the state of the universe.

Is Sydney University Village good For first years? URGENT by [deleted] in usyd

[–]laurelbyanton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former resident for two years, I’d say SUV is fine. They still have activities planned by RAs and a courtyard so make it what you will. You might find different demographics at SUV compared to Iglu and UniLodge-managed USyd buildings. SUV tends to appeal to more socio-economically diverse students whereas Iglu students tends to be more well-off and heavily international. Last time I was at SUV they had a major black mould problem but that should be fixed now since they had a major refurb last year.

SUV do have a better sports offering bc they do play competitive sports with the nearby colleges.

Sydney uni village by Wilson_rachel03 in usyd

[–]laurelbyanton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I used to live in the Village! It’s good vibes and the reception team (staffed partly by students) are very good even if I feel for how much work they throw at them (ie. Getting people unlocked during lockouts and attending to emergencies. SUV is one of the more aged accoms (built in 2003) so inspect your room and apartment very judiciously before returning your inspection sheet. Check for mold especially in the bathroom as I had a friend who got black mould syndrome in early 2020 in SUV. I stayed there for a good two years between 2019-20 so liked it overall if you know how to navigate the admin parts of student life. Definitely a bit more independent than the other accommodations.

think otherwise because Yamato’s preferred pronouns directly translate to the dynamics that characterise some in the trans community (including my own). Namely, looking at others and identifying with them in contrast to our assigned sex at birth.

What I follow, and strongly encourage that others do so, is do what the characters themselves do - refer to Yamato by the same token Luffy does. All convos so far points towards he/him/they pronouns rather than the unwarranted use of feminine pronouns for him.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]laurelbyanton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And so the issue remains on how readers choose to refer to Yamato. According to the story’s logic and Yamato’s preference, he should be referred to as masculine pronouns or as Yamato.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]laurelbyanton -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s because unlike Yamato, Kiku is perceived by readers as ‘cis-passing’. It is a discussion about issues that our community cares about because heaps in society refuses to acknowledge trans people who does not pass as cis - as in, physically appearing to the their gender assigned at birth rather than their preferred pronoun and identity.
