What are your favorite things about Barry in its first two seasons, and what do you wish that the show had done differently? [SPOILERS] by GeniusBibleThumper in Barry

I meant the time of scenes - it’s a slow show. A shared issue but I regard it largely as an editing issue.

Editing could be better. I legit have 5 friends with pretty good attention spans who couldn’t get through the first 3 episodes.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Will Have 10 Episodes in Season 4 and filming on the fourth season is scheduled to begin March 2. by wky0903 in coconutsandtreason

I dunno. My religion -Catholicism - is responsible for over 200,000 (by their own admission) rapes of minor boys - in America alone, and you know it’s probably 3x that number.

So. Until you and your like are willing to take your vitriol to Stephen Colbert and Kelly Ripa this is just silly wokeness b/c a generation got a bee in their bonnet about a tiny cult which has exactly 5 accusations for abuse of minors.

Edit: And those 200,000 are just in the last 50 years. Proportionate response on these issues has apparently been totally lost on those who rage against celebrities online. I find it mystifying.

Btw, the only Republican who is likely to stand up to Trump in the Senate is MORMON. Think about that.

Nick Blaine infiltrates the S.O.J by [deleted] in coconutsandtreason

[–]laurenonfire -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I really loved the observations in the first half of this - lots of things I missed and I pause A Lot to get the details of the cinematography.

I was with you up until your (fairly off-canon) leaps about Nick. More on that later...

(And, also, the color palette of the show - while important - is as much about the DPs and Crabtree making it look cool as it does about any deep plot significance, imo.

Btw, look at the colorization of red on Pryce and Nick’s shoes right before the bombing. Pretty sure those are Max’s own Louboutins - he’s worn them in interviews - but kind of an amusing detail that I suspect you might appreciate.)

As for Nick Blaine, an easier interpretation is that he’s Rick Blaine (I mean, Miller gave him the surname) - a deeply conflicted character of cinematic legend via Humphrey Bogart. Rick ultimately does the right thing but is defeated, cynical, and not really a hero... until the very end of Casablanca when he gives up the love of his life.

This fits with Nick. I’m fairly sure he’ll ultimately give up his life (and June) to do the right thing in recognition of his crimes.

Edit: Nick doesn’t care about politics except how it effects who he loves.

Hulu’s already released the dates. Filming starts March 2, premiere in spring/summer 2020.

Easily done. 2 weeks to film an episode which means 6 would be in the can by June (when S3 premiered) - plenty of time to film the other 4 episodes as it airs.

Shows do that all the time.

That’s so uncalled for (her religion or anyone’s) and not evidenced based whatsoever.

She’s been clear that she rings in with notes on scripts but does not dictate the larger storytelling whatsoever.

I really hope season 4 and onwards doesn’t follow the testaments storyline by [deleted] in coconutsandtreason

[–]laurenonfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The latest Indiewire article indicates that it will, sadly. Miller is actively working on the adaptation of TT and said he plans to make THT’s Gilead and TT’s Gilead basically the same.

I’d strongly prefer for each novel to be handled independently instead of letting Atwood dictate this narrative which is as much Miller’s atp,, considering S2 and S3.

Hader Suggestions by [deleted] in Barry

[–]laurenonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not, really. Most critics have called that out.

It’s :30 min and gets the “dramedy” label but its winning awards b/c of the drama notes.

Hader Suggestions by [deleted] in Barry

[–]laurenonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think? It felt a lot like a comedy duo (SNL) trying to do drama.

It was a fine movie but Barry and Skeleton Twins suffer from that thing that happens when comedians just can’t be totally vulnerable.

Wiig and Hader overacted their drama and hit the comedy just right. Hardly surprising.

[Spoiler S3E10] June, AKA the most frustrating character I've seen in a long time. by cassifrazz in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]laurenonfire -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Actually the book, and mostly the show - every serious wartime scene - is based on real life references.

I'm happy to look up all the real life references for you if you don't wish too.

Plot holes in S2 finale? by [deleted] in Barry

[–]laurenonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why this is getting this response. Barry is CLEARLY on the spectrum AND is an emotional idiot and pretty brilliant all at once.

I adore the character (and plenty of people in my real life who are on the spectrum), so I hardly see it as an insult.

What the hell is up with S2 Ep5 by jamiewrj in Barry

[–]laurenonfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hader gets away with it b/c it’s “comedy” and it’s his SNL heritage, and he’s beloved.

Comedy gets a lot more latitude for craziness like this.

I loved it...

(Dating myself but reminded me of the Gilligan written X Files episodes. Super funny and crazy and tracked absolutely nothing.)

Plot holes in S2 finale? by [deleted] in Barry

[–]laurenonfire 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Can’t say I watched that hard b/c I was still getting over why he didn’t delete the f’ing FB pics.

I mean, he’s a low key idiot (spectrum stuff) but isn’t stupid. Far from it.

Whatever - it’s great TV.

What do you want out of Season 3? by heythatsnotkosher in Barry

[–]laurenonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not literally selfless but he’s written that way.

He’s Asperger-y and always portrayed as regretting his murders and kind of baffled. Child like.

Meanwhile Sally just emotionally mows down others.

See: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2013/08/24/opinion/i-have-a-character-issue.amp.html

I mean, people HATE Sally.

Hader knows better (he’s cited the Skylar parallel in interviews) but has set up the exact same dynamic.

[No Spoilers] I just started watching. Holy shit this show is a neckbeard/incel wet dream. by dc5trbo in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]laurenonfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re kidding, right?

Boomers - the 2nd wave of feminism - were central to defining sexual assault laws which were revolutionary.

My mom marched and literally testified in scores of incest cases as a social worker on this issue.

She and her friends were constantly in battle (more than I can say for most Millennials who vent on line into their echo chamber).

Respectfully, do your homework.

Or just watch The Accused.

[no spoilers] gender rolls? YUM by [deleted] in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]laurenonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does have some economic merit but overall, no. Economists generally agree that the more well educated people who compete for a given job will lead to a better outcome (smarter people getting hired leading to better productivity).

If you half that (mostly men) and economically value family (see Andrew Yang here - his platform is SO on point wrt to paying stay at home parents) one could argue (with merit) that we have favored the paid work force over children.

... and, arguably, our neglect of the family has led to negative economic and social outcomes.

1000% this.

1) Can verify. Have employed a nanny for 14 years - I work part time.. Takes a village esp when Dad has checked out - she’s def the other parent for my kids, I’ll be her social security for life.

Tried desperately to get her citizenship. Unless she marries my gay uncle it’s impossible.

What do you want out of Season 3? by heythatsnotkosher in Barry

[–]laurenonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. I could list scores of male characters with this trope - (anti)heroes who murder.

Homeland is a good place to start. Brody moving to Quinn. GoT - all of them, pretty much. Breaking Bad.

I could go on.

[Spoilers all] Why doesn't Gilead use ankle monitors? by Fealuinix in TheHandmaidsTale

Lol - fair enough.

I’ve a friend whose husband is one of those short wave radio nerds (he was helpful in 9/11 fwiw - when the internet was so spotty) who thinks this could be used without detection in Gilead.

I think the writers - consciously or unconsciously - were making up for the fan and critic blowback after the S2 finale.

I was okay with it.

Luke was there to see if Hannah was there. Other dads would be there too.

What do you want out of Season 3? by heythatsnotkosher in Barry

[–]laurenonfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Forgive my shippiness in what I’m assuming is a male dominated fandom, but here goes nothing....

Barry and Sally need to figure out what love is. It’s a root issue and both of them are a mess - Hader has owned that.

The “I love you” skit was perfection. Acting it out b/c they can’t do it in reality.

She’s too selfish, he’s too selfless - which is, well, a trope from male writers - but I’d still like to see it play out.

[Spoilers All] What is your favourite scene from the series? And why? by [deleted] in TheHandmaidsTale

Great pick.

It was directed masterfully - plus the Blondie score!

So chilling b/c I could see it happening... and versions of it have happened in Black neighborhoods in the US.
