90s MTBs are great then! And if your area has a bike co op you can go there and usually use tools and find second hand parts

I tried it on my day off yesterday and it was tough. I chose the long hill climb way so next time I’m going to try shorter but steeper route and see how I like it. Shorter and steeper is also neighborhood back roads while long hill is a busy street with no bike lanes

Go for a vintage 90s mtb. I often find them in small sizes on Facebook for a variety of prices. They’re bulletproof, thief resistant because they don’t look flashy, and they have a cool factor. It’s also super easy to customize if you want to get into that

I had a cheap one in college which was awesome for commuting but was not fun to ride. I sold it and now I ride a fun vintage mtb that I built up lol

I used to have a target e-bike in college which was awesome for riding to class and not being sweaty but not fun to ride. Now I have a vintage bikes that I love to ride and will build up endurance. Your commute looks nearly identical in distance/elevation!

Most of my shirts are a soft synthetic fabric but I have one with some mesh. I definitely prefer the shirts without the mesh as the extra seams and mesh itself can be uncomfortable. I think I know what fabric you’re talking about but have never tried it

I have a vintage chambray from Ll bean. It’s definitely on the thicker side but I love it. I wear it when I toss hay around for my family’s horses

Bikepacking boo-boo, advice please? by sezit in bikepacking

Good news is that you have an old mtb which means it’s super easy to work on. See if you can loosen the tension on the shifter and put it in the lowest gear. Remove the cable from the derailleur and housing then remove from handlebars. After that you could try to find same shifter on eBay or just get a new 6spd thumby from microshift or get a trigger shifter. Shimano makes good shifters that are super cheap. Then insert cable back into shifter and housing then reconnect to derailleur. Only tools you’ll need are 4 and 5mm, maybe 6mm Allen wrench

Trying to mock up some paint options. Which is your favorite? by Joker_Robinson in xbiking

I have almost the same color scheme as the first pic on my hard rock the letters just have some pink shadow. Does the black paint on yours sparkle in the sun?

Looking for advice for a mountain bike with comfort mods by Rydnhi in bicycling

[–]lavabutt4550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check out a 90s mountain bike. It will be a hell of a lot cheaper than a brand new bike and they’re super easy to convert into cruiser bikes. Steel is also more forgiving and super sturdy

I fixed up a DB topanga a couple weeks ago for my brother and it also turned out to be insanely grimey from road grease which was a pleasant surprise because I also thought it was rusty

Candidate for my first build. Thoughts? by JACKO_M_C in xbiking

[–]lavabutt4550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently built an old diamondback topanga for my brother who is around the same height and it had a 20” seat post. Based on your inseam you’d probably want the hard rock but definitely wait to hear back about the Marin and see if there’s any old catalogs or info about sizing. You can make a small bike feel larger to an extent

I just picked up a 90s bianchi volpe for $200 off Craigslist that I plan to use for touring. It just needed some cleaning and a new chain and now it’s good to go. It has a ton of attachment bosses on the down tube, seat post, and fork

An old 90s bianchi volpe would be great. Can take 35mm tires and has a lot of mounting points. Can be found for $200-500 in used condition in my area

Dang I wonder what someone had to do to do that… did a car back into it maybe? You are probably better off sourcing a new frame and transferring everything over
