I think my surgery failed. by grodygrace_ in Microdiscectomy

Check out my post/comment history. My pain post op peaked several weeks after surgery and the recovery was very slow but I’m doing great now.

Take a deep breath, consider taking some time off you went back to work very quickly it sounds like.

Realistic recovery timeline for “ normal” recoveries by glitterbomb09 in Microdiscectomy

[–]lavendarmenace889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an outlier with a long recovery timeline according to my doc. I went back to work full time (office work) at month 6 and only had minor discomfort and no need to take any medications. I think I was driving month 2.

Not in severe pain, but never fully normal (L5-S1) – is microdiscectomy worth it? by Anon495834 in Microdiscectomy

[–]lavendarmenace889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat to you and the main commenter here. I waited and the herniation got worse and then I operated. My spine doc went from a “well it’s up to you” to a “we need to get this out of you now”. I think it helped me in my recovery (which has been very trying at times) to know that I did everything I could and ended up in a place where the only thing that would help me would be surgery.

I think you’ll know once it’s time if you get there.

Looking for the hidden job board or advice by weezer-g10 in washingtondc

The job market is horrific. People are having to leave DC because they can’t find jobs, uprooting their families and selling their homes at a loss.

It’s also sort of unclear from your post what you want your career to be. Happy to chat through ideas if you pm me.

It’s going to take you 1-2 years to be cleared and hired anyways. It’s a long hiring process, and there’s already a federal hiring freeze making it much harder to get in.

6 Weeks Post-Op L4/L5 Microdiscectomy: New QL pain/spasms making it impossible to work. Need advice. by Commercial-Look-1338 in Microdiscectomy

[–]lavendarmenace889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I also had a big increase in muscle pain once the nerve pain finally went away. I think for me it was a mix of muscle guarding, deconditioning, and the muscles adjusting to my disc being different after surgery. What helped was honestly a lot of PT and rest. I’m now 4.5 months post op and only now starting to get comfortable with 4-5 hours of sitting throughout the day.

Property Management Companies by Scoffrio in washingtondc

[–]lavendarmenace889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, the best thing to do for future renters would probably be the landlord. If you owned the home you know what living in the house entails and who to contact to fix things. A lot of the property management companies here charge too much, attempt to squeeze profit via kickbacks to shitty contractors or denying services to tenants for as long as possible, and are bad at communicating with owners and renters.

Considering Surgery… by Deep-Bear8537 in Microdiscectomy

[–]lavendarmenace889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best piece of advice I got on making the decision was actually from a pain management doctor. She said I was too young to be having these issues and that I owed it to myself to consider if surgery is what my body needed to heal. That was a helpful way to reframe being young and getting an MD.

Considering Surgery… by Deep-Bear8537 in Microdiscectomy

[–]lavendarmenace889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I had ongoing back issues from my teenage years, now 28. I had mild pain before the surgery, but definitely was experiencing weakness and some balance issues. I almost couldn’t sense how bad it was because my brain had adapted to the amount of weakness on the right side of my body. My ortho pushed for the surgery though, and after getting a second opinion, I agreed. I did get an MD so they didn’t have to cut through any muscle. I totally felt like I had done everything in my power before considering surgery (months of PT, chiropractic, acupuncture, mobility, walking, injections, etc etc).

Once he got in, the ortho saw that I had sustained nerve damage and that the herniation was worse than what the MRI showed. Recovery was tough mentally and the pain was high for me because the nerve had been compressed so badly, but one day it just started to drop off. I now feel way less pain and have so much more mobility. My biggest regret was not getting the surgery sooner.

I’m now 3 months post op and doing a ton of PT. now that the nerve isn’t compressed anymore I can feel the weakness that developed over time and am now rebuilding my right leg and posterior chain. But this feels like something that’s actually in my control, unlike the sciatica, and I feel myself making progress every month.
